What an unfortunate & horrific mess - I wonder if there were any survivors. One also tends to wonder, in such extreme cases, if fitment of airbags would have helped mitigate matters. I must admit to having a mild bias against the deployment mechanism (specially the time delay after the onset of the event to the time it takes for full deployment) of air bags.

The following is OT perhaps, but relevant nonetheless![:)] :-

I remember seeing in another forum the depiction of the mechanism in a Toyota sedan. The actual mechanism was a very dated assembly using vehicle inertia to trigger the deployment. Apart from the obviously rusted assembly, I felt that a device meant to save lives in such extreme situations warrants a good deal more serious research & sophistication in design - than using mechanical, inertia driven solutions.

Sir, for airbags to work seat belts are required to be worn but not sure if the passengers & driver had them on. Also, I am not sure if MSIL gives standard dual airbag in Alto 800 so there might be chances that these models weren't having airbags. Yet, that indeed is a terrible mess.

Tata Nexon turns turtle, but the occupants were safe:

The driver had to swerve to the left to avoid a Tata Ace; the front-left tyre that went off the road and burst; as the driver was regaining control, a woman appeared and he had to steer right; a roadside ditch caused the Nexon to roll over... Luckily none was injured.

Me: Though it appears to be a low speed tumble, Nexon has taken it, on its stride, REALLY WELL, just like that. Clap clap clap.

OMG, I uploaded three pics of the Nexon involved in the said Accident; first being upside down with the next two being the left and right views. I reviewed before "submitting". Don't know how these irrelevant pics ended up here :-)

@ Mods - Pease remove Pics from my above post. Said Pics are available in the link given.

It is painful to read this.

Three persons including an engaged couple were killed and two more injured on Wednesday, the 24th Jan 2018. The incident occurred when the would be groom, who was driving the car, tried to avoid hitting pedestrian (who walked into the path of the vehicle), and rammed into a tree on the roadside near Palya village on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru NH 75. They were returning after a pre-wedding photo shoot.

From the pictures, it is difficult to comment if the Airbags deployed or not. The Fortuner took the impact ONLY on the Left side. With the Front, Right side and Roof relatively unaffected, I think the Fortuner did NOT roll-over. From the damage to the left, I think the car was doing 60 to 80 kph. YET, both the front seat occupants died in a burly Car. With the impact on the left side, "how did the driver die ?!? " It is difficult to guess the reason for the loss of passenger's lives.

All I can say is, no matter what vehicle one is in, it is ALWAYS better to wear seat belts... even in City Traffic. And no matter what vehicle one drives at whatever speed, it pays to be on the look out for the unexpected. DRIVE SAFE.

PS: This YouTube video of a "Car with 5 Star NCAP rating ramming a tree at 55mph (88 kph) shows the extent of damage a car can suffer at THAT Speeds". Those on limited time may watch from TL 2:30 . Video Link.

One engineer from B'lore was killed on the spot and three others were injured when the car they were travelling overturned after hitting a sign board and turned turtle near Madenuru on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway 75, on Friday. They are all natives of Hyderabad. The injured were admitted to a private hospital in Hassan. Shantigrama police, who visited the spot, said rash and negligent driving caused the accident
One report claimed the car to be Swift while another said it is a Baleno.

My Analysis:

  • One doesn't wantedly drive onto a signpost. Once past 80 kph, keep looking for trouble on the road - like a "speed bump or a pot-hole or a cyclist loosing balance or a running animals etc", which might force a Change of Direction.
  • The damage to the car conveys "undoubtedly unsafe speeds". This unsafe speed depends on a Car's "Stopping distance, ABS, GC, Structural Strength etc". The Driver should know this. If at all one is driving at speeds above 100 kph, ensure that at least 40m clear space is available "to react and stop the car completely" and also expect the unexpected to happen. If you drive a light weight car with an enthusiastic engine, see post # 4327 above (on "Fortuner Accident"). Drive within safety limits.

Deccanherald reported the same accident mentioning Baleno but with a Picture of an accident involving Xylo (link).

Don't know when and where this happened, but it appears that 'Xylo's overtaking move' went wrong and the result is very bad. Indian roads, specially those "single lane dual carriageway" roads WILL test you, with chokers not yielding space. Your patience will run out, forcing you to make a stupid move; do NOT make THAT stupid move.

Photography is a good hobby; stop the car and click a few pictures. So many times I have done that. May be, trying to pluck few tamarind fruits will bring out the Child in you. It is pretty fun ... Try it [cheers] . Once, I ended up collecting a few Lotus Flowers from a nearby Pond. Have "Shorts / Lungi" ready for such occasions, if you know swimming [;)]

It is Swift Dzire. Note the rear door quarter glass lying on the roof.

Judging by the amount of luggage strewn around the crash, the Alto likely had 2+ occupants - for whom the prospects are bleak based on the structural destruction.

Also, apologies if this is too graphic, but look at the black and white shoe between the cars in the 3rd image - it almost looks like someone's foot was left behind (although the image is a little fuzzy).

We definitely need to be moving faster (no pun intended) toward safer cars - no more of these pathetic tin cans MSIL keeps pushing on the unknowing public.

Ps. This is my 1000th TAI post!

KRISHNAGIRI, TN: A doctor couple from Bengaluru and their driver died when their car rammed a truck that was ahead of them, near Shoolagiri, Hosur, TN in the early hours of Tuesday.
As Doctors, they would have saved so many lives and cured so many people. It is a National Loss. RIP.

Difficult for me to guess the vehicle (Indica ? Getz ??). One report put the time of accident as around 3 AM. Recently I've traveled in this road from 2 AM to 4 AM and the roads were nearly free. Buses and Trucks WERE FOLLOWING LANE discipline seriously. Chances of driver having a shut eye is more. From the damage to the vehicle (head lights are ON), I guess their running speed was within 80 kph. I feel, if occupants were wearing seat-belts, at least the rear seat passengers could have survived. Do wear seat-belts.

Blame is NOT on MSIL ALONE. Ciaz Sedan with 1.4 Lit Petrol Engine outsells by a huge margin "a solidly built Linea with a 1.4 Lit Petrol Engine". MSIL sells what Public desires (pun intended). The heavier Brezza though is a welcome change from MSIL.

Buyers are to be blamed
for giving "max priority to re-sale value [frustration] , FE and maintenance" than their own safety. Drivers are to be blamed for NOT driving within their limits and also the limits of these small cars. Passengers are ALSO to be blamed for NOT wearing seat-belts and for not calming down an erratic driver. If MSIL starts selling safer cars, prices will go up and MSIL risks loosing market share. I stopped blaming MSIL in this regard. Turning point ? Post # 4327 in this thread.

Mysuru: A over speeding car rolled over from the Outer Ring Road on to the Service Road in South Mysuru on Wednesday. The two front row occupants escaped as the airbags got deployed, but sustained severe injuries. They were still on the seat despite the car overturning multiple times. The three backseat passengers were not wearing seat-belts, were thrown out of the car and died of head injuries and multiple fractures.

The Verna was allegedly doing high speeds, when it rammed into a roadside pole, then a divider before rolling over.

I feel sorry for the loss of young lives. RIP the departed and condolences to the families.

Sources : 1, 2 and ToI, B'lore edition, Page 6 (also in ePaper).

My Views:
  1. I do drive a Verna with "ABS, Airbags, thicker sheet metal and weighing 1200 kg" etc. In the 1.6 CRDi Verna, there's lot of power on tap. If one is NOT used to it and occasionally drive it, he/she will be at 100-110 kph, when they think they are at 80 kph. When the A-pedal is buried, in no time it climbs to 140 kph. Those occasionally driving a powerful car should know SUCH differences. With great power comes greater responsibilities.
  2. However free the road is, keep speeds within legal speeds inside City limits; 100 kph even on Ring Roads. When you SLAM the brakes, a Car doing 80 kph obeys you better than a Car doing 120 kph. Drive Safe.
  3. The front occupants are alive, because of seat-belts and Airbags. Had the rear passengers used seat-belts, they could have at least survived. People at the rear think that they are safer and avoid buckling up. Check out his link (here) to know what happens when the rear seat passengers do not wear seat belt. Strictly instruct people to wear seat belts.
