Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

Hi glomus,
I dont use that anymore, as it was sold along with the old car. It reduces body roll to some extent.

Its been raining cats and dogs in Bangalore for the last few days and on one such evening, I drove around 55kms (inside Blr) in heavy rain and water logged roads, The engine started to overheat and had to stop @ ring road and wait in car for nearly an hour for engine to cool off and then drove back home.

Next day I suspected the radiator leak to be the source of the problem and got a used radiator from scrapyard, cleaned everything, drained old coolant and put back everything. This replacement radiator was an aluminium one, since the fins were bent, not much of cooling, yet again overheating issues, hence came back home, and put back the same old copper radiator back.

I had a trip (family one) to Tirupattur (TN) about 180kms from Bangalore on Sunday, I left early morning and everything was normal and I was @ 90kmph - 110kmph most of the time, then at the toll gate @ Krishnagiri I found the needle to be almost @ 70% (towards H). Stopped the car, removed grill and opened onnet and let the engine cool for sometime, then again I drove the remaining 80kms without grill, the temp seems to be fine as long as I am @ 50kmph and on highway, once I entered the narrow roads, the temp started to increase and finally I had to stop the car on a lake bund road near Madawala (a small village near Tirupattur) and I heard the coolant bubbling noise from the plastic tank it is stored in [cry]
7 car over heat highway.jpg
This time I was randonly checking everything to see whats wrong and then called up Varun, he was right the radiator fan was not working at all! Thats why only on highway things were fine, as the early morning breeze cooled the engine, then did a diy and shorted the sensor which controls fan and radiator fan kicks in, permanently ON when key is in ignition slot.

Managed rest of trip without stopping anywhere, finally reached home and waiting for salary to buy a new radiator and switch. Despite all this, the journey was awesome, the confidence in the car is doubled now [clap]

Thanks for the reply!
I do have a makeshift alternate switch inside the car, which I can turn on directly, in case the thermostat or wiring go kaput. The fan wiring goes directly from the battery to the fan through the switch. Also I am having the Type 2 (or 3?) radiator fitted on my 1988 Type 1 car, which keeps the engine really cool. Got it from a scrapped car for about 1000 Rs I think. When you buy the new radiator, go for the new type one.

Hi all,
Most of the grinding noise is gone now, as it was a cracked bearing inside the wheel hub which was causing that noise. Now only a mild humming noise from GB and new gear oil topped up.
The car is much much silent now and a pleasure to drive indeed.

Took the family out to temple nearby (70kms to &fro) and the whole ride was awesome.
A few pics now

Zoom the pic to see the broken bearing.

Even @ 100kmph car is 50% silent and vibration free, all thanks to the bearing.

Sunday Shopping:
New MGP radiator = Rs.1940/-
New thermostat (Minda) = Rs. 190/-
Coolant= Rs.200/- (1ltr)
Distilled water 2ltrs = Rs.20/-

yet to install all these as no weekend offs

Hi Sid,
I am not sure, if new Omni steering will fit 800.

Raman:
Even my mechanic said the same thing, that he needs to get to a lathe to get the bearings put inside the hub. But as usual good lathe shops willing to do quality work are rear near my home. So we just went ahead with hammering. Everything is good so far (touch wood)

Update:
New Radiator fixed, Coolant and distilled water filled, all connectors to fan & thermostat are insulated with tape. Type 2 meter mod working well [:D]

Great job there, Anand. I really find it fascinating to read your DIYs. Our 800's battery is an Amaron, which was installed in 2010 and is doing okay, but i still suspect quick discharging as it does not start in one key turn during early mornings. The car is otherwise healthy and im yet to try out the A/C blower passage clean up which you had explained. Would like to get my hands dirty helping you out with your DIYs if you are okay with it. [:)] I tried contacting you over the phone, but it seems you are on a hectic schedule. Could you pass me Ashok's Garage, Uttarahalli contact number, as our car is due for service soon. TIA [:)]

Update:
The blower has too many dust particles in it, so removed blower motor and washed it. Then applied foam from shampoo water to inlet of blower and also the vents. A lost of is out now. Just apply lots of foam and switch the blower on, most of the foam comes out with dust stuck to it. Also used wd40 to free up the control cables (not much of success here though). A few pics of same.

Some kids scratched the bonnet of my car, wanted to do a touch up of the same and also the grill I got from Varun needed respray, so removed the bonnet and grill. Sanded the bonnet with 2000 sheet and did a little touch up, then sprayed a layer of laquer on it. Grill was sanded with a 600grit paper and sprayed glossy black paint on it.

When ever I find time, I have to do a little bit of Rubbing and Polishing on the bonnet. I will post a better day time pic tomorrow.
