Mineral or Synthetic Oil?

Hi friends,

As always I have been a silent reader of Tai and in particular ertiga all ertiga news(since I own it). So know I have something to share. I have moved to chennai since feb'14. Yesterday wanted to give my ertiga for 30k kms service.

I went to MSM guindy @11 and u won't believe the service advisor gave me 13000 estimate and gave me receipt and asked me take the vehicle next day (over the phone it was confirmed the same day) fine not an issue I agreed. I than went to customer lounge and went thru the estimate 6500 for ooil change misc. 800 for ac duct cleaning. 4500 for egr cleaning. 900 for brake cleaning and 600 for rattling issues.
I had went back to service advisor and asked why he quoted 4500 for oil he told its 3300 for oil and rremaining are for topup and then I argued with him why I need to use synthetic oil then he TD me its maruti recommended then I told him there is a circular from manufacturer he told that's for swift and dzire alone.
Then to convince me he took me to another stupid SA who told me oil will be burnt insid engine and thats when I got angry and blasted him for giving such an info. My SA started convincing me. I somehow agreed to gave my vehicle and left somehow on the way back I was not convinced. I went back called the SA and told to return my vehicle. Took it and was then thinking where to go next then remembered ABT straight went there to get the quote I Checked with SA about the mineral oil stuff. He told me maruti is fine with mineral and there is no warranty issues and I asked him to reconfirm on oil stuff and then he gave pro.pt quote of 4800 (all that MSM quoted - EGR cleaning) asked him why that was not mentioned he told that's not needed now..EGR cleaning is required when black smoke is emitted or above 50k at 30k only checking is required. I simply gave my vehicle and at 5 got a call that the vehicle is ready. The SA also mentioned brake pads are fine whereas in MSM the SA was telling that brake pads might be needed to be changed.

My advice to all maruthi diesel vehicle owners please do not accept synthetic oil and Maruti wants people to use only mobile1 as if there engines are 99% efficient. Please dont go by SA words. After all this one thing is clear maruti making big money ey using this sentiment of all car owners(claiming synthetic is the only one for all there engines(fiat engines)).

Also decide to oil every 7k since its mineral now up to 50k kms and then on every 10k kms.

Regards
Gokul
This was my experience in just wanting to change to mineral oil

Is it not the “synthetic oil” recommended for Tata Manza quadrajet diesel in the first place and the oil change at 15k, 30k, 45k… km?
Please clarify.
Thanks.
Now oil change is 10K - 20k - 30k - 40K etc with semi-synthetic (Petronas 5W40) or every 20K with fully synthetic (ExxonMobil 0W40). I ran 11K before I changed, next time will run 18-19K.

I hope the Manual says so, the drain intervals and the oil specifications.

19,000- 20,000 km drain interval?

Be it mineral or synthetic, I wouldn’t wait beyond 10 k km limit for engine oil change in any of my cars.

If I am willing to pay a few more bucks for synthetic oil, it’s only to ensure a cleaner and more efficient oil for better performance and longer life of the engine. You could take the advantage of a bit longer drain intervals but not as long as 20k km, IMO.

I also hope so. I will check the viscosity of the oil after 10-12 k and monitor for change after that.

0W? In India?! IMHO that cold viscosity is way too low, even in Germany we never used below 5W and were fine!
Yes its one way it is not required since temp in these parts of the country seldom go below 10C but its definitely useful in Northern India where temp goes sub zero.

But in all I get better engine lubrication and life, and probably better FE[:D]

Lubrication and life might be compromised while the engine is still cold. FE will be unchanged because the hot viscosity (40) is the same as your previous oil.

Hi all,
Just curious. Whenever i tried to search for a engine oil ( full synthetic ), its Mobil Delvac 1 that come up. I wanted to know how about castrol, it has been in India for long. I was just checking on some options. Castrol EDGE with Titanium Fluid Strength Technology™, is this a Diesel Engine oil and if so any idea on the price. Second one is Castrol Magnatec Diesel, any idea on its performance and price.
Am looking forward to change my Swift VDi engine oil.

Choosing the right engine oil is not just about whether it is synthetic or not, what really matters is the viscosity, friction rating and oil additives. These 3 components are the actual contributors to what makes an engine oil worth the money.

Personally, I have had good experience with Castrol, although I haven't experimented with brands much.

Thanks for the reply viru. Sorry, but i am not much of an engine oil expert, other than that it runs the engine. For me i want the best for my car ( which i love a lot ). Since the service is due. I want to give it the best option available. And Synthetic is what i am going for ( have been using it from my last service and the it feels smooth and there is a reduced noise of diesel clattering ). As per my Knowledge Mobil is a reputed brand. It's just that i want to know more of the Synthetic engine oil option other than Mobil and wanted some brands and name so that i could see the difference.
viscosity, friction rating and oil additives are matter to be considered, but for me i have regular commute and pumping ma ride or zip zap zoom. the only time i zoom is when i have to overtake. Since i don't intend to ride on a kamikaze run [anger]. I know i keep the engine happy. Synthetic is what i know i can change the engine after 10K Km and my car has crossed well that. For me i dont like to open up the engine after 5k Km to change oil. Its a one time affair 10k Km and am chilled out.
So any One who has Name of the engine oil which can be used in Swift VDi, would be thankful if i get some name of the oil that i can try. If nothing come's its Mobil [;)]

Hope I'm not replying too late, but it's great to find somebody who really loves their car [;)]

If you wish, you can read my really comprehensive post on choosing engine oil: http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/technical-zone/16281-choosing-right-engine-oil.html

Otherwise I would recommend Castrol Magnatec 10W40, personally I think Mobil's viscosities are not too commendable.

In my knowledge Maruti recommended oil for swifts diesel (starting from some particular VIN number) is 5W-40. kindly confirm it with your MASS and use it wisely.

Good to know that you have a good mind to try new things to know the real experiences of it. In the case of me I personally love Mobil1 and I'm really addicted to it :D

Dear Viru, not all Swift diesel engines can use 10W-40. Don't you know it?[confused]
