Use a good coolant and change it after every 20k or 2 years. And before draining flush it with a good radiator flush. For flushing you can use Wurth Radiator cleaner 250ml.

and for Antifreez you can use Wurth new age coolant which is used in 1:4 ratio as compared to conventional 1:2 coolant that means you can fill up the coolant sump of 4 litrers with just 1 liter coolant, more over it is hard water compatible and 100% Biodegradable.
Prior to wurth i was using Elf glacelf supra the best ever coolant to enter the indian market it was so good and so expensive that due to its skyrocket pricing this product got flop and was discontinued . A 500ml bottle used to cost 125rs in 2008 where as u could have bought 2 liter of Puroguard or delphi or 1 liter of golden cruise at the same price in 2011.

Use only distilled water to mix with coolant.

i've a maruti 800, type 2 - 1998 model.

over the last few days my car engine is overheating and i'm witnessing a strange behaviour

1. Car runs okay for first 5~6 kms from cold condition. with the radiator fan switching on automatically when temp needle nears the middle.
2. after the car is run 12~ 15 kms the temp needle begins to cross mid point on gauge and fan switches on while the temp needle is hovering between mid and H
3. after some driving in point 2 state the temp needle touches H region in gauge and the fan doesn't turn on at all.

i have also checked that after some time of driving in 2 and 3 the radiator coolant dries up and steam begins to come from the coolant reservoir.

Also once the car behavaior is as in point 3. turning the radiator fan direct and topping the coolant doent bring the temp down.

I have also tried
1. to change the thermo valve , but there is no change in behaviour
2. there is no oil in radiator
3. there is no water in engine oil

what could be the potential problems? can the gurus please help

PS : MAS says change engine gasket and fan sensor in radiator.

Thanks for your inputs. I have got the hose pipe and radiator cap checked and they are okay.

Whats the process to get the radiator cleaned. and

any additional checks?

Thanks again. will get this done and share update.

One more question - can it really be a head gasket and thermo switch problem, given the details of my scenario?

Guys Guys Guys !!! always keep a check on your engine if its unusually heating up then check the radiator next morning, open the radiator cap the coolant/water should be upto the neck of the radiator, keep the radiator cap open start the engine either the coolant/water should spill or it should remain till neck, when you will accelerate the engine the coolant/water should show movement like whirlpool.

A. if the coolant/water is less than mentioned above then there is surely leak in cooling system, check for the leakage and fix it with the help of mechanic.

B. if the coolant/water does not show any signs of movement, then the cooling system is clogged, get the entire system flushed and cleaned properly.

There should be no oil content in the coolant/water and wen you accelerate the engine there should be no air bubbles visible in coolant/water, if any of the 2 happens that means you need to change the head gasket.

I am really thankful to you guys because of whom i was finally able to trace out the problem in my maruti 800, it was getting overheated since a long time, the problem worsen and within 10kms of driving it use to get so hot the it stopped when i opened the bonnet there were lots of fumes and smell of oil burning[cry], finally i was able to trace a leak in the radiator, i further examined to find that coolant/water was having oil content as well as it was showing air bubbles, hence because of my foolishness i escalated a simple leak to head gasket repairing, thing which could have been rectified in just Rs.300 will now attract Rs.3000/- ten times the original cost [frustration]

So guys simple mantra is if your car is malfunctioning dont drive it until the problem is fixed else you will end up paying 10 times more as i am doing right now :stupid:

All the best guys.

By the way whats the kms on the ODO ?

I guess it wont be the problem of head gasket.
Get Rid of Over-Heating in few simple steps:

When the engine is cool, open radiator cap and see if the coolant is upto its neck if not then topup till neck, recheck next day if the coolant level again goes down, there is surely a leakage in the cooling system get it traced and fixed with a good mechanic, i prefer MASS.

if still problem presists,

open the radiator cap when its cool, start the engine, the coolant should show movement like a whirlpool, if there is no movement then it means the cooling system is clogged get the entire cooling system flushed and cleaned properly, incl. radiator top bottom tanks and core, hoses, water body, etc.

if still problem presists,

open the radiator cap when its cool, check for oil traces in the coolant, if there is oil content even if single drop of oil is there then your head gasket needs to be replaced, start the engine coolant will show movement look for air bubbles if they are present, then your head gasket needs to be replaced, get it fixed from MASS or any other reputed mechanic as its the vital part.

Never drive a car when its hot, i did it mine car's radiator was leaked and i still drove it only to escalate it to head gasket change, the problem which could have been rectified for Rs.250-300 is now asking Rs.5000/- :O its more than 15 times of the original cost, so beware else it can blow a hole in your pocked

Hi
i have a 15 yr old maruti 800 which is overheating a lot. What could be the problem should i get the radiator changed ? If yes shpuld i got MGP and if yes whats the cost ?

what other pipes etc can i chnage alongwith the radiator [surprise]
first of all ,

hello [;)] i too own a maruti 800 2000 carb model. it used to overheat few weeks ago. i have tried many ways to fix the prob. also some mechanic told me to make the fan direct but i dont like that because, the fan runs before even you switch on the engine and starting a cold engine was nightmare with direct fan.
so one fine day i dropped to a local mechanic who cleans the radiator. he checked the fan and suggested me to clean radiator. it took 2 hours to open the radiator and clean it and finnaly fixed it. The total cost was Rs400.
before you would clean the radiator take your car to local mechanic tell him to check and tell if its necessary to clean the radiator or replace. you also see the radiator and drain the coolant and open the cap of radiator and examine inside if there is brown colour , rust like formation the i would suggest you to replace the radiator..
if you find boiling water in coolant reservoir then some times replacing the radiator cap also resolves the prob
maruti genuine part cost
1) radiator Rs 1200 (radiator only does not include fan)
2) radiator cap Rs 75
hope your problem will be solved

Hi all,

From 2 days I am facing the same issue, the fan is running, but after I drive 15 - 20 kms and switch off the engine I am able to hear the boiling sound , When I checked the sound is from the coolant tank the water/coolant was boiling the box cap has changed its shape, but the gauge shows only half the way.. pls help, my car is 8 years old and clocked 74500 kms, I got the coolant replaced recently..
hello, i too own a maruti 2000 carb model replace the radiator cap. its mgp costs Rs 75 and before doing that confirm that the radiator fan is working when engine is hot. if yes then replacing the radiator cap will solve the prob because their spring will lose stiffness after a service time.
hope your pro will be solved. [:D]

hello [:)] i too had the same prob a few weeks ago. when ever i go to college which is 12 km from my residence there is no overheating and when i return from college when i take a look at the temp gauge. astonishingly the temp gauge will be between 80% and tries to veer towards the H mark and when i switch the engine off and let it cool for a few minutes and while turn the key to ignition the fan runs. as if it is direct

so i was against getting the radiator cleaned which suggested by my friend but when did get the radiator cleaned it worked like charm. there was lots and lots of rust or mud like formation almost 700 gms to 1 Kg.
dont be mistaken that i dont maintain my car. i always use distilled water with coolant 50-50 mix.

get radiator cleaned replace radiator cap in worst case you should replace head gasket

hope this solves your prob[:)]

I've Maruti 800 5-gear MPFI, Dec 2000. During the last month its getting overheated again n again. Coolant gets boiled up and rushes out with pressure from the coolant box, thus emptying the radiator. This happened during the traffic jam when I had to run the car on 1st gear. Two days back I got the radiator changed and also the thermostat valve. No problem when going to Delhi but when coming back the same prob surfaced. Surprisingly the fan is also working. Then I had to make the fan direct so that engine gets cooled continuously and filled the radiator with water. I've fitted my car with cng last year. What should be done?

hey PK
i have been running my 4 gear MPFI May 2000 .
i got CNG fitted last 2010
and its been running good
some minor hickups are always there due to CNG
what exactly happens with the over heating problem
how do you realize car is over heating
other than coolant rushing out and emptying the radiator

Your fan is not rotating speed at which it should get fan checked
