I've Maruti 800 5-gear MPFI, Dec 2000. During the last month its getting overheated again n again. Coolant gets boiled up and rushes out with pressure from the coolant box, thus emptying the radiator. This happened during the traffic jam when I had to run the car on 1st gear. Two days back I got the radiator changed and also the thermostat valve. No problem when going to Delhi but when coming back the same prob surfaced. Surprisingly the fan is also working. Then I had to make the fan direct so that engine gets cooled continuously and filled the radiator with water. I've fitted my car with cng last year. What should be done?
Also check the head gasket it might have minor leaks which cause over heating.

Thanks Varun. I went to a mechanic yesterday evng. He also told the same solution i.e. head gasket. That means half engine will be opened and will cost around 3K-4K. Temp gauge is showing no signs of engine heating.

hey PK
i have been running my 4 gear MPFI May 2000 .
i got CNG fitted last 2010
and its been running good
some minor hickups are always there due to CNG
what exactly happens with the over heating problem
how do you realize car is over heating
other than coolant rushing out and emptying the radiator
Although every mechanic says it has no relation with CNG but my apprehension is that engine is not able to take that heavy load reqd of a CNG kit. No other reason for over heating since temp gauge is fine.

3-4k is bit higher, here in B'lore they charge 1.5 to 2k for removing and replacing the head gasket, if engine head is bent then it has to be sent to lathe get get it surfaced, then it might go upto 3k.

Keep us updated.

PK cng is just like petrol ie inflammable when it can run buses or loaded trucks then why cant cars or in your words car takes load on cng, as for overheating check valve in cooling circuit before changing head gasket as it can go bad with rust.

One small advice for all car owners NEVER add water if car gets OVERHEATED till the temp comes down,if necessary add water to radiator with engine running at idle speed, add water very slowly.

My 2 Cents :

1. Have the entire engine flushed and refilled with Engine Oil.
2. Check for the coolant container it is stained with dirt from the engine which flows back and forth.
3. Change the Gasket and have the head serviced if it is out of place.
4. Never add water in the coolant which gets sucked in the engine resulting in engine death.

Even with minor signs of overheating following this process would help in the longer run.

"Never add water in the coolant which gets sucked in the engine resulting in engine death."
Can you please clear this

Hey friend,
Where have you heard this ???. I think water or coolant can not be sucked in the engine, as the engine has pipes in which the coolant/water runs(surrounding the mechanicals) thus cooling them. The water can only be sucked in the engine if the cooling pies have some leakage.

an engine overheating problem

hello there i own a maruti 800 , which is overheating now a days, here's the prob , the fan dosent run even untill the temperature gauge veers towards 'H' mark and sometimes it starts running when temp needle is halfway . this problem started when thermostat valve was removed during service yesterday , also the L-bow's are changed , untill then there was no problem
Steps ive taken
1) Got the radiator cleaned 2000kms before as it was choked
2) Changed the radiator thermostat switch to minda before 2000kms when radiator was cleaned.
3) Checked the temp gauge with fan running all the time the needle stays in the middle
im worried because the temp gauge needle has touched 'H' mark atleast 10-15 times[cry] . some times the fan starts at half mark and wont start even untill 'H' mark.
the service centre guy says , as long as temp needle dosent fully cross even the 'H' mark there is nothing to worry
is it time to replace the radiator now or should i replace the radiator fan switch . this overheating issue is annoying me
please TAI guru's please help me sort this issue

Re: an engine overheating problem

1. the fan dosent run even untill the temperature gauge veers towards 'H' mark and sometimes it starts running when temp needle is halfway .
The problem seems to be due to a faulty thermostat switch.

2.this problem started when thermostat valve was removed during service yesterday
Why was the thermostat removed ??

3. im worried because the temp gauge needle has touched 'H' mark atleast 10-15 times[cry] . some times the fan starts at half mark and wont start even untill 'H' mark.
Get it checked soon and do not drive in this condition

4. is it time to replace the radiator now or should i replace the radiator fan switch . this overheating issue is annoying me
Check the switch first

First get the the thermostat switch replaced. Also check for lose connections of the fan also the fuse. Is your car carb or mpfi ?

Also check if the radiator is blocked.

Dear Mr E,
Please don't call me sir. And get the thermo switch replaced ASAP. If the part is not available presently with the mechanic and if you have to drive the car, get the radiator fan connected via a switch. or get the fan direct and see if the temp. needle rises to the H mark.

Gurus, please correct if I am wrong.
