Experienced automotive experts, good day. I am new to this online portal, However keep a tab on all the happenings in the car world on this forum. Finally I have become a member. Feels good. Coming down to the point, I own a 1986 maruti 800. On its 30th year I would want to give it a new life, since its rusting in places, and some of the interior parts are worn out. Need help from the experts who have restored their cars to old glory. I stay in bangalore and have decided to get the car painted, interiors replaced. Please let me know good painter shops that I can visit. Thanks! Here is a present picture of my car. She bone stock, running on yokohama tyres, she has clocked about 2.75lak kms, with an engine work in 2007. I love her! Would want her to gift her something special.
Your 800 looks clean from inside, however, yes rust can crop up at places you have expected. Please check the following areas for rusting-
Front Cross member
Cross member, Dash panel
Upper cowl
Full Floor (From inside as well as from outside)
Rear wheel well
Area behind quarter panel door pad (Both side)
Fuel Filler neck
Insides of door and door hinges
Running board
Rear cross member
Leaf Spring Mounts
If it is surface rust, you can get it sanded down to BARE METAL, then apply primer and paint.
If its perforated rust, REPLACE that panel straightaway. Each and Every panel, whether small or big, is available with MGP. Trust me, tinkering is just waste of money, telling this through my experience.
Whatever you do, after that anti rust coating is a must. Go for 3M or Rustoleum.
Also, while giving your car to any mechanic, make sure he is competent enough to handle complex jobs like replacing panels, and is equipped with proper tools. For example- Say you are replacing the running board, the tinker will first cut the panel and then re weld a new one. So before cutting the panel, they need chassis jack to support the body, so that the measurements don't get messed up and he welds at proper place and angle.
Once the place or angle is messed, it can never be perfect and will cause lots of issues.
BTW what is the mechanical condition of the car? Engine, Gear box, Suspension, Steering?
