dear Sumit,
thanks for your answers and no problem if it was late, every one has to get time from their busy schedules
well i know the function of a distributor and the advance mechanisms in it. i only wanted to know what a CTA service is. couple of days ago i did ask about the CTA service in the Lucas Service centers but they said they do not do this service in their workshops. I asked two of the service centers known to me in Pune. they said they have the spares if required. They also said my mechanic will be able to do the service. I doubt any mechanic will be able to do this service cause they might not be having the appropriate equipment to test the dizzy.
As you said you did it at MASS i am very much afraid of going to MASS in view of my last experience with the carburetor at MASS as they do not have knowledgeable people to service carburetors. i am suspicious about the service of distributors too, at MASS. for almost one and a half years i am trying to get the carb right.
right now i am facing a bit of knocking/pinging when on inclines and also loss of power once the car is warm/hot. once the car is upto speed it is all OK but to get to speed takes a lot of patience and is not as it used to be earlier when i used to press the pedal and the car responded immediately, no doubt it responds but is a bit sluggish it seems. i suspect the timing and also loose timing belt.
what would be the symptoms of a loose timing belt?
what is your advice
I want to do a full overhaul of the carb. Any pointers are welcome.
regards
mandar
You are very much right about the experience at MASS. Even i faced some issues in my earlier MASS with my car. But then we should not generalise this statement about MASS. Touch wood, my MASS doesn’t treat carb 800s like outdated machines, they love working on oldies. My MASS is full with old 800s, carb zens, esteems and gypsys.
Coming back to your issue, i feel this is much relatef to carb and not disteibutor or CTA issue. I would also suggest you to check the clutch cable adjustment.
A loose timing belt would have snapped till now, so i may rule out timing belt. Also, if it was not opened before, there are negligible chances of timing belt going loose.
As far as i know, CTA service requires no spare parts, only cleaning and lubrication, if required.
Only thing is that, the distributor needs to be removed from the car and opened completely to access the CTA Mechanism.
BTW what is the condition of your clutch plate?
Suggestions for you-
1) search a good “experienced” carb mechanic.
2) check clutch cable adjustment.
3) open CTA only if the issue doesn’t resolve after carb and clutch.
Regarding carb overhaul, change petrol jets, needle and float. Also the carb gasket.
All parts should be available with MGP. If not MGP, go for UCAL Mikuni.
Try to do a comprehensive cleaning of the carb by opening it fully.
Regarding the carb adjustment, this comes only from experience. So you need a good experienced mechanic who can tune the carb. After carb adjustment, get the timing adjusted by the timing gun.
One more thing which i want to suggest you is please check the condition of the spark plugs. If its old, change the plugs before timing adjustment.
Check for oil deposits on the plug
