I must say, I just went back in time while reading through the whole thread. I still remember my childhood days when I used to travel around in my cousin's M800 . It sure is a peppy little car and by seeing this I must say how reliable these cars are.

A Big Kudos for keeping your White Swan in Top Notch Condition [clap]

White Swan gets equipped to take the fight to the High beams [clap] [:D]

Swiftshashi helped me to source the D/N irvms for my Maruti 800. I got it installed yesterday, along with a few other minor jobs.

The screws were badly stuck. However my SA ensured it was removed without any issues. They struggled for almost half an hour.

Dear Sumit,
was reading your thread and read about your dizzy given for a CTA service. I would like you to explain

1. what a CTA service is ?
2. where was it done (locally or authorised lucas service)?
3. cost of the service?
4. what problem were you facing for which you gave the dizzy for service?

Hi mandar, to answer your questions-
what a CTA service is
CTA stands for centrifugal timing advance. In earlier cars, the one equipped with distributors for spark and ignition timing. The timing was advanced or retard according to need. Now when you suddenly press the accelerator pedal, say for an overtaking maneuvere, the timing needs to be advanced so as to burn the excess fuel and give you a burst of power. For this there are weights and springs inside thr distributor, which flys away with the centrifugal force, thereby advancing the timing. (This depends on engine rpm). Now when you leave the pedal, the weights come back to the original position through springs and reduced centrifugal force, thereby retarding the timing again to normal position.
Hope this explains.
where was it done (locally or authorised lucas service)?
I always stick to my MASS for all mechanical repairs. However lucas people also do these kind of jobs. I would suggest you to stick to MASS.
cost of the service?
I got it done with few other works too. So i dont remember the exact charge. But should be approx 300-350 for labour charge.
what problem were you facing for which you gave the dizzy for service?
Whenever i needed to get a sudden acceleration, the car felt sluggish, and jerked. Sometimes while passing a breaker or a pothole, if high rpms were required, the engine died.

Hope i answered all your questions, and very sorry for such a late reply

dear Sumit,

thanks for your answers and no problem if it was late, every one has to get time from their busy schedules[thumbsup]

well i know the function of a distributor and the advance mechanisms in it. i only wanted to know what a CTA service is. couple of days ago i did ask about the CTA service in the Lucas Service centers but they said they do not do this service in their workshops. I asked two of the service centers known to me in Pune. they said they have the spares if required. They also said my mechanic will be able to do the service. I doubt any mechanic will be able to do this service cause they might not be having the appropriate equipment to test the dizzy.

As you said you did it at MASS i am very much afraid of going to MASS in view of my last experience with the carburetor at MASS as they do not have knowledgeable people to service carburetors. i am suspicious about the service of distributors too, at MASS. for almost one and a half years i am trying to get the carb right.

right now i am facing a bit of knocking/pinging when on inclines and also loss of power once the car is warm/hot. once the car is upto speed it is all OK but to get to speed takes a lot of patience and is not as it used to be earlier when i used to press the pedal and the car responded immediately, no doubt it responds but is a bit sluggish it seems. i suspect the timing and also loose timing belt.

what would be the symptoms of a loose timing belt?

what is your advice

I want to do a full overhaul of the carb. Any pointers are welcome.

regards

mandar

You are very much right about the experience at MASS. Even i faced some issues in my earlier MASS with my car. But then we should not generalise this statement about MASS. Touch wood, my MASS doesn’t treat carb 800s like outdated machines, they love working on oldies. My MASS is full with old 800s, carb zens, esteems and gypsys.
Coming back to your issue, i feel this is much relatef to carb and not disteibutor or CTA issue. I would also suggest you to check the clutch cable adjustment.
A loose timing belt would have snapped till now, so i may rule out timing belt. Also, if it was not opened before, there are negligible chances of timing belt going loose.
As far as i know, CTA service requires no spare parts, only cleaning and lubrication, if required.
Only thing is that, the distributor needs to be removed from the car and opened completely to access the CTA Mechanism.
BTW what is the condition of your clutch plate?
Suggestions for you-
1) search a good “experienced” carb mechanic.
2) check clutch cable adjustment.
3) open CTA only if the issue doesn’t resolve after carb and clutch.

Regarding carb overhaul, change petrol jets, needle and float. Also the carb gasket.
All parts should be available with MGP. If not MGP, go for UCAL Mikuni.
Try to do a comprehensive cleaning of the carb by opening it fully.
Regarding the carb adjustment, this comes only from experience. So you need a good experienced mechanic who can tune the carb. After carb adjustment, get the timing adjusted by the timing gun.
One more thing which i want to suggest you is please check the condition of the spark plugs. If its old, change the plugs before timing adjustment.
Check for oil deposits on the plug

dear sumit,
thanks for your suggestions about the carb and dizzy. some points i would like you to clarify,
1. how do you remove the dizzy?, last week i tried it but it was not budging. it did not come out by even a millimeter. so i fixed it as it was.

2. the bottom most part of the inside of the dizzy is touching the housing ( in the inside). probably the thrust washer/bearing/plate is kaput. what can be done. IMPortant. spares are not available at any of the stores - authorized or otherwise.

3. can i remove the dizzy and just carry it to the MASS for an overhaul/CTA service?

4. Now as my car is lpg retrofitted every time i switch over to petrol some thing is blocking the jet? pls help.

5 the clutch is new. had changed it around 50000kms . odo now is 75000 approx. AS said earlier i had some problems with MASS last time they changed the clutch alongwith the pressure plate and the flywheel. it had a very snappy action . got changed it again TWICE. things did improve but not as original. Now i repent getting the plates and other parts replaced.

6. spark plugs are new . around 5000 kms on the plugs. i dont think they will be deteriorated in just 5K kms.

7. the timing belt was opened when i changed the water pump. but it was around 15-17 years ago.

8. what would the compression of all cylinders in psi be? would like to get it checked.

pointers and advice is welcome.

regards

mandar

Hi sumit,

great job on your White Swan! We too have a 1988 M800 needing some attention specially since we've stopped using it since about 6-7 years (after buying a Vista). Just wanted to ask which garages/MASS you went for all work/parts.

Thanks!
