Hello everyone!!!!!
Greetings!!!!!!
New kid around the block!!!!
stumbled on this thread and loved every bit of it. I was searching for ideas to resurrect a KiHo 1999.
Having spent my earlier life on Bullets RE, of different shapes and sizes ( 350/500/535) I stumbled upon this little one last December. I was looking for a self start vehicle and a light one.
Scooty. I just didn't like. So the contenders were Activa and Access. I tried both of them for a couple of days but somehow was not impressed. Both lacked character in my humble opinion. The ride didn't generate that excitement.
Then I came across this 1999 baby. Rusted front, ill maintained. Dead front forks. Day one I rode it for 45km. No meter, no lights, signal with a mind of their own. But the mere sound captivated me. I wanted that one. Period. Just filled the two tanks petrol and 2T oil and I was off. Someone pointed out that air pressure was low so filled some air (didn't even know what are the rated tyre pressure.
Rode it for a couple of weeks without any change .. I was clocking about 300km per week. Mind made up .. after convincing the others who mattered, financials were settled. A princely sum ( lesser than the cost of a Bullet bore/piston kit).
First thing I changed the front shock absorbers and the bushes and bearings in front. Ride became more comfortable . one day I checked the speed against the GPS on my phone and it was happily puttering at close to 55 kph (no speedo to compare). Then I took the leap, opened the drive chamber. I was in for a shock. The drive belt was literally hanging. The rollers in the clutch were literally stationary. The grease had solidified. Cleaned up everything changed the drive belt. As I was ignorant about the presence of the rollers in the clutch had to use the old set. There was no oil in the gear box!! Drive became smoother. Here I took initiative and started the meter. I was ready with the wheel side worms and a cable. But when I went to replace them I was surprised to find them intact (the original ones). Decided to re-use the same set. Meter has been working since then comparing with GPS the offset is about 4%+.
Today I replaced the rear shock absorber and the silencer.
Now a days I see that the pocket rocket (thats what i call it) cruises effortlessly at 60 - 63 kmph. And I can push it up to 73 -74 kph.Though that speed is for a couple of minutes maybe.
Now that 3 months have passed I am looking to seriously do it up. Here i have a couple of queries for you experts.
I saw some of you have upgraded the tyre size to 100/90-10. Is it a straight fit on the Kinetic rim? How about clearances? If it doesn;t require any change I am thinking of 100-90 rear and 3.50X10 front. Is it advisable?
The engine is stock. Nothing has been done to it. Do you all think its ok to leave it as it is? Or maybe there are some maintenance that might just increase its reliability.
I get a steady mileage of about 45kpl. Is it more or less than normal?
What is the best way to paint the plastic panels? Once painted how long will the paint on them last?
Can we use a K&N type conical filter instead of the filter in the box? I am asking from the performance angle.
Is a complete wiring harness available for the KiHo like we get for a bull?
Can any of help me to procure a maintenance / workshop manual?
Last but not the least can you all help me the common failure points of this vehicle?
Let me close this boring write up by saying this. I enjoy re-building the machine as much as I enjoy riding it. I have quite some miles under my belt on the Bulls but if I can build similar reliability on this little pocket rocket I plan to do some touring. I will be grateful if you share your precious knowledge and help me to realize my dreams
Cheers
