@kichu
He was reffering to 2 wheelers FE. I dont know if same would be the case with cars.
@jarpickle
thank you for sharing the symptoms of defect in cat-cons. In some heavy-vehicles(not AC's) we see drops of liquid coming out from the exhaust pipe. Is it due to defective cat-cons?
Ya i know he was referring to 2wheeler. Valve timing and back pressure combination is applicable for both 2wheeler and cars

If water coming from the tail pipe is the only issue you found then its quite normal, nothing to worry about.

If your FE and power drop and you find yourself pressing the accelerator and the car doesn't move like it should the problem could be your cat con.The symptoms are similar to that of a worn out clutch.

Some cars have more than 1 cat con.If you find any problems, remove both of them and try using the car.If the power is restored you need to check and replace the cat-cons.
Here the low FE and power drop symptoms that you have mentioned are common to both for worn out clutch and the clogged catcon. So by just considering only these symptoms, its really not wise to check the catcon by removing it,. Because testing the catcon by removing it is a bit more time and money consuming job.

In the case of worn-out clutch, if you try to floor the gas pedal in neutral it wont resist the enigine to revv up, where as a clogged catcon wont revv up and may end up into stalling.

A simple SMOKE TEST can give you a little bit details about the condition of Catcon with less effort.
So IMO its better to go for testing the catcon by removing it only after getting enough symptoms.

Are smoke testers readily available?Can you confirm this?

A fully clogged catcon will resist revving.A partial cat con might not resist revving.It will also idle normally.

I mean a regular Pollution Under Control Test. Isn't that much available?
Using that check the readings of Hydrocarbons and Carbon monoxide. If it is normal, then there wont be any problem with the cat-con.

Ya, a partially clogged cat can idle well without informing us. But even if it is a partially clogged catcon it will be very much known when we floor the gas pedal in neutral. If this is not the case then how do you think there comes a power loss or a poor fuel efficiency while driving with a clogged catcon.?
Obviously its because of more restrictive exhaust gas flow through the clogged catcon. Agree to it man.

Check whether brio have got O2 sensor after the catcon, if yes then you will definitely get an engine check light when the cat is faulty.

I didn't know you were talking about PUC machine.You mentioned smoke test.That was confusing [confused]

The poor FE is due to the fuel going past the cat con.Burning of a rich mixture.

In this case a pressure test is more suitable to finding a cat con problem than a PUC test.Since the PUC reading can be high due to a faulty O2 Sensor as well.

My mistake[frustration] Really sorry for that, everytime I use to say only smoke test instead of that and So really i forgot the name PUC [roll]
Thanks for making it clear for the readers :)

"The poor FE is due to the fuel going past the cat con.Burning of a rich mixture"
How this can happen due to a faulty catcon? No Keith, Thats not possible.
AFR has no direct relation with the catcon. so it wont go rich or lean. But when the catcon is clogged it will get more restrictive and hence reduces the performance.

I dont know whether it can used for finding the catcon issue, if yes then this is the thing you must have said instead of making the checkup by physically removing the catcon.

If the O2 sensor before the catcon is faulty then this will give a wrong result. I agree.
But Keith, dont forget we started talking about analyzing a catcon in such as way that by assuming our O2 sensors are healthy.

I own a brio for the past one year (has run just 2500 kms [cry]). Oflate i feel the engine noise/sound has gone up a bit, specially when idle or when i am starting it first time in the morning. Is it becoz of the winters or am i just imagining it.

Does your car idles at higher rpm even after the few kms of drive? If yes then there might be something.

Or else, its quite normal for a cold engine to idle at higher rpms. After a couple of minutes it will get in to the normal idle rpm.

Oh , I dint bother to check the RPM, will get back once i do that. Though the noise is not that alarming, but IMHO brio engines are the quietest when idle and i can notice the subtle difference. During the first few months i used to look at the tachometer to understand whether the engine is off or idle [:D]

My cars starts with abt 1500 rpm after a KM ride, it settles down to 1000 RPM (when idle). Is it normal?

I drive through the ghats say, 3-4 times a year. And the roads are made of stones. The stones pop out of nowhere and hit the engine (I presume this by the noise). So I plan to get it covered. Just if thats the case.
