What do you mean by Caterpillar?

I am referring to the Catalytic converter.
:stupid:
There is a terminal called a caterpillar terminal in the batteries. I had asked him to check the terminals of the battery specifically(CaThode). He then showed me to connect the jumper wires to the battery and start the car. he said that was a better way out and I felt he was right.

Never heard of battery terminals referred to as caterpillar terminals.

what has the contoller got to do with recharging the battery ? isnt it for emission control or something related to mileage concerns ?
What controller are you talking about now?

I am referring to the "Catalytic Converter" .Please read post#410

Push starting a car can damage the Catalytic Converter.

Hi Ajay,

Catalyst Converter (aka Cat-Con) is a device that uses a catalyst to convert three harmful compounds(Hydrocarbons, Carbon monoxide and Nitrogen oxides) in car exhaust into harmless compounds(Carbon dioxide, Water, Nitrogen).
Position of Cat-con is closer to the exhaust ports of the engine.

So when we try push starting, there are chances to get the fuel spilling into the cat-con and it may results in damaging the cat-con.

No need to worry too much, probability of getting cat-con damage is very less especially when you push start your car once in a blue moon ;) I had a couple of push start kind of starting(starting the car in a slope without cranking the starter motor; just for fun[roll])

If you feel something is wrong or you want to make sure your cat-con is healthy then have a SMOKE TEST. That is the simplest and easiest method to check the condition for your cat-con.

I hope this will help you:)

Regards.,
Kiran.

If any defect is confirmed by the during this warranty period as per the stipulated warranty terms and condition, except for points mentioned in “Limitation,”

BTW I have never heard of this beep. I always walk back to the car from my house on noticing that I had left the headlamps on.[frustration] How did you get the beep?
Thanks for the link Ajay. I found a lot of ambiguity in the part listed under 'Limitations'. So basically I understood that any part damaged due to improper handling and natural wear and tear will not be replaced, which essentially means that the engine is the main thing which is covered by Ext Warranty. Any other parts such as gear box, power windows, door locking mechanism, etc may / may not be covered under EW. Other than this, any damage to the car is covered under insurance. So frankly I dont feel very much convinced about the benefits of EW. Maybe other members will be able to shed more light upon this.

To answer ur 2nd part, yes, a continuous beep does come if i keep the headlights ON and remove the key from the ignition. A different beeping sound also comes when driving with handbrake engaged

Ahh!! Sorry for the wrong word used in the post. My mistake. Regret.
I meant to say isn't converter used to control the emission ? How does it play a role in push start ? Don't the two wheelers add this controllers to increase their mileage and keep the emission in check ?

There are caterpillar battery terminals, I dont know if we would find them in cars.

OT: I was in a presentation in office yesterday. They were talking something about controllers. I was busy with TAI and hence the typo (converter became controller).[lol]

Thanks for the info bro. I knew about converter but the typo left the post in a complete mess[frustration]. And that is what the battery guy had also said, You can push start once or twice but not everytime. Make sure you don't drain the battery completely. Thats being careless. . Lesson learnt

-Here the Converter is only for controlling emission.

How does it play a role in push start ?
-While push starting there are chances to get the fuel spilling in to the Catalytic Converter and this can damage the Cat-con.

-A Cat-Con wont helps in increasing petrol mileage. Its only for converting the poisonous exhaust gases into less harmful gases.
But a clogged Cat-Con will get more restrictive and will reduce petrol mileage and performance.

once a while push start is ok.

and then we are discussing Honda. I remember my 1st santro had a battery failure after 5 yrs or so and somehow i was lazy and had to restore to push starts for quite a while.

these cars are made to withstand tough handling. also with the engine so quiet i have cranked my already on engine a couple of times. I think that is more dangerous than push starting your car which you see quite regularly in delhi traffic.

Completely agreed to what you have said here. And thats the way I thought of the cat-con too that its role only is to control the emission. And then I happened to give my car for a wash in 3M and the guy had said (in general talk of how to improve FE) that he had added a cat-con to a bike and the FE had increased. And hence I thought cat-con plays a role in FE improvement too. I googled just now about cat-con's role in FE of a 2 wheeler and it doesn't show up satisfactory posts. So the guy maybe (or is) wrong.[roll]

Haha., Ya such information will definitely make anybody to get confused about the use of catcon.

Here there is one more thing to consider, that is the "combination" between the exhaust Back-Pressure and the Value Timing.
Note: This combination will differs from engine to engine. Therefore there are people who got more FE with the removal of Catcon.

If that guy got more FE with the addition of catcon, then the reason can be that his engine requires a bit more back pressure to get the prefect sync with the valve timing. So that wasting up of unburnt charges can be reduced(In order words, limiting the fresh air-fuel mixture flowing outside of the cylinder along with the exhaust gases during the "exhaust stroke" of the engine.). and hence more mileage.

Here instead of adding the catcon if he had reduced the diameter of the exhaust pipe, then it will also results in the same thing.

Hope it is clear now [:)]

If your FE and power drop and you find yourself pressing the accelerator and the car doesn't move like it should the problem could be your cat con.The symptoms are similar to that of a worn out clutch.

Some cars have more than 1 cat con.If you find any problems, remove both of them and try using the car.If the power is restored you need to check and replace the cat-cons.

He was reffering to 2 wheelers FE. I dont know if same would be the case with cars.
@jarpickle
thank you for sharing the symptoms of defect in cat-cons. In some heavy-vehicles(not AC's) we see drops of liquid coming out from the exhaust pipe. Is it due to defective cat-cons?

That is normal condensation.Hot exhaust and cold pipes and also due to hydrocarbon and oxygen reaction.Mostly seen on short trips.

If there is too much water there could be a head gasket issue or something more serious like a cracked head.Coolant level dropping can be an indication.
