I had purchased the Green cotton filter storm with stabilization kit from petes for my magnum. cost me 8k but all it did was suck in so much dirt, butterflies and leaves that the air sensor near the intake of the air filter would trip and car would go into limp mode. I hardly used the filter for a month and now its resting in a box in the store room.
I would advice anyone to go for these aftermarket filter only if they live in a relatively dust free clean city.

Is there any instance known by anybody that use of K&N filters damaged the engine? Probably K&N sales almost 30,00,000 nos. of air filters all over the world in a year. So far I heard that law is more stringent in Europe and US then if use of it damaged the car engine there must be some news of litigations. Is anyone has the informations on this? I have also read that Green cotton, Piper Cross and K&N etc. uses almost same materials and oils for their air filters. If this is true then why complaints are only against K&N and not others.

We are talking about high end filters are a whole, not just K&N.Just so happens that K&N is one of the more popular brands among enthusiasts.

Please go through the entire thread.

Please post the kind of filter you are using and the filter that was recommended by the manufacturer.

To be honest with you all ,
Air filters (stock boxed one) doesn't make much difference , if you really want to have a performance modifications you need to remember
MORE AIR + MORE FUEL = MORE POWER ( Bigger exhaust)
now thats a common rule

for that you need Pro Air intake (cold for petrol engine ) , bigger fuel injectors ( tuned ECU) and only then you can cope up with all the combustion and of course platinum/iridium spark plugs and bigger exhaust from exhaust manifold . Yes, Welcome to the real world of racing

so if you really want to have all this done pnly then go for aftermarket air filters such as K&N , APEXI ,HKS etc etc

This is what I had on My TRD Chaser , Cost about $175 Au (~ 9000 RS)

Thanks for the information@codename47.

This is discussion is more about the daily usage of a performance filter in dusty environments like ours and the amount of particles(dust/dirt/other contaminants) that it allows into the engine along with the increased air flow.

What are your takes on this?

Thanks codename. You said it all. Just changing air filters wont do the job. A lot has to be done to really get higher performance from the car. Most of us dont need this in our daily use cars. But there are some people who like there cars (daily use cars) to perform like race cars.

Jarpickle - Daily Driver cars doesn't need to have performance air filters because they aren't meant for that purpose , however if you want to treat your chick as a beauty queen well than you can get stock air filters from performance brands but to be honest there might be a 5-10% escalation in the ride quality.

If your saying dusty environment , well then I would say filters are designed to keep the air clean before then enter the intake manifold.

There are so many ways to keep it nice and clean. In my car I have a Pod filter (ENCLOSED) in a box that makes it legal modification however there were chances of it being dirty because there was a hole under the enclosed box ( because stock intercooler was there) So I had to cover it with net and put a thing layer of foam just to be careful.

@ Nozzlering - thats exactly what I mean. Daily drivers shouldn't be using such high performance parts , its waste of fuel. I know my car does only 300-350 kms in one tank of Premium unleaded (98 octane) 50 litres

Air filter of my car it was pretty filthy , this picture was taken while I was having an Idea to fix it. ( I know thats a scotch bright [:D]) for illustration purposes only

but yeah I got that NET from bunnings and fixed it with screws. Tidy all the wires ( thats an AFM )
Pod filter goes there.

My point exactly.

Can you share more views on the filtration of a stock(OEM and not a stock replacement filter from performance brands)filter and a performance filter.

I am of the opinion that the performance filters and stock replacement filters that claim to allow more air to pass free are also compromising on filtration.

Please share your views codename47.

Thanks

@sreeharik8202:Please read the thread title.

We are not discussing prices here.

We are discussing the benefits/disadvantages of it for regular usage and are they really worth spending so much extra.

Please go through the thread.

I always wonder if only adding a good quality air filter increases horse power, then why dont it comes as a stock ?
A few hundreds increase of price vs few horses - I guess majority will find its okay with the added horse.

K&N oil type filters are not very usable in our country where we have so much dust in the air. In countries like US/UK they can easily fit this type of filters. The recent nano fibre filters seems to be a good trade off between filtration and air flow. But I am not sure if they are in India yet.

My experience with dyno tests ( while I was in US ) revealed not more than 1 hp gain vs stock filters ( with K& N and other free flowing filters ). This much of hp can never be felt behind the wheel.

A true Cold Air Intake with an exhaust upgrade should proivde a more free flowing system , hence adding real hps ( which can be felt at least ). Tune the ECU after this and then you are good.
