Tata Sierra - Turbo! - wheel bearing

Some update.

There was wheel bearing noise , kind of grinding noise for almost many months.

In between , it was time for wheel alignment and i returned back to my old aligner . Since my aligner deals with good year and Micheline i had to buy from another place for the mrf - cheapest of the lot and a way of supporting our local factory , i did balance and align at their place. Caster and toe reading were in range but camber was not in range and they said the job is over. When asked reason they said they have adjusted for india road condition [frustration] - well never ever in life i will return to that aligner again.

Now back at my aligner place , the wheels were jacked up and bearing made the shake.

Filled/checked air and left place.

just few shops past the place , there is the spares shop - luckily it was empty - this place used to be crowded like hell all the days!

bought the front wheel bearing alone - as only they were worn out.

Each costed 580/- skf. Mrp was 677.
total cost 1160/- and had just 1230/- in wallet. What a week to begin![evil]

Armed with these bearing will be heading to garage Monday!

sierra turbo - bearing , arm bushes and ball joint replace

Update time

Replaced the bearing - front.

ball join set - replaced - 1800/- talbros make
steering end that is the tie rod end - replaced - 1200/- - rane make

upper arm bush - replace - 480.

lathe charges - 150/- , each bush at cost of 25/- . Upper arm 4 bushes .
and lower ball joint need to be lathe fixed . so total of 150/-

Alignment - regular 250/- but they had bad time with shims and aligning a total improper car after the works - time taken was 3.5 hours

Temperature issue

In a bit confused state , is that really a issue or i am making a issue.

while cruising at 60 to 80 kmph , the temp is normally at 25% and i am happy

at speed above that the temp raises to 50 to 60% - bit worried.
Ok , both the above cases is with out ac

when ac is switched on another 10 to 20% increase in both cases - very much worried.

But some another day on cool road , the above reading were bit lower than hot day.

Some suggest head works - that would be silly to touch on a perfect running car.

Remember , once i slow down cruising from 100kmph, the temp comes normal too.

I suspect the fan not working to the desired level. i mean its not cooling the radiator to the desired level.

I feel i must switch over to higher rpm fans - electric fan.
the choice is indica's behr , radiator fan

What do you people suggest?

i mean the radiator fan. Hope you are not getting me.

All rear drive car comes with mechanical fan.

latest gen cars have viscous fan - mechanical fan that is independent of the engine speed , where as normal mechanical fan is exactly what the rpm is.

Sierra - Turbo , gear box work

yesterday , got the gear box down.

the gears were bit harder to engage so to inspect i got them down.

there was only about 4oo to 500 ml of gear oil in it[frustration]

it fills about 1.7 to 1.8Lit of gear oil.

A fauty packing was leaking and bought the packing - it was said gear box packing kit and priced 80/- no idea what make it is , with out any brand name!

one yoke oil seal , though not leaking was bough since during this work it may leak on refixing

oil seal 100/-

the clutch plate was damn good , as said by previous owner , the clutch plate and release bearing was new. [thumbsup]

the clutch pedal though hydraulic was bit tight - have driven one stock single owner sierra and it was so light like any other new car available now.

Did find the clutch slave cylinder as culprit. it was kind of worn out , but working. the master cylinder is not touched. no further penny to spend for the sierra!

did buy that slave cylinder too for 800/- , TVS make.

I was not aware of bosh oils! got bosh gear oil , 190/- per lit.
other brands are 220 - castrol , mobile was 235/- per lit.

need to inspect shifter bushes today.

As usual , there was some other car and it was left unattended by mechanics!

On my part , i got it cleaned .
first bathed it with diesel - purse weight reduced by 50/-

then with the silicon remover - Not a pleasant experience under a cement roof on hot sun - your eyes will be irritating and slightly irritating sensation kind of to head too. May be i used more of it.

The gear box was all clean!

Then some petrol , taken from the bike to clean the clutch plate and the cover assy.

mean while some 2 to 3 coolant hose which were old and hard was replaced. In that process , i cleaned an old bucket and drained the radiator fluid to it. My luck after 3 hours nothing was left! - a small crack was culprit . Just my luck!

Hope today the lion will be roaring!

tata sierra mechanical to electrical fan

Update

After searching high and low , with no one's idea/experience started the conversion job.

Shopped for a electric fan.
Indica's was big and best
indica's telco fan was 6000 Upward where as tvs inrad was 2700/-

Not satisifed with price searched even more and got one electric fan with same motor for almost some price less.

got the indica's thermostat switch.

the coolant flanges have a provision for the thermostat switch . now its in lathe for drilling holes and making thread for the switch assy to sit.

hope by evening the car is ready with new cooling fans![evil]

I dont think that the car should heat up that much, upto 80% with the A/c switched on. Check whether the fan is working properly? And hope the coolant is good.

Absolutely yes.
No idea about the wattage , but in idle with no load , the amp meter shows almost near 20 amps and reverts back to near 0 when the fan cuts. so all power is from alternator only

It was kind of normal sierra owners complaint that the temp needle is almost near max point.

The truth is , though its near maximum point , the temp is normal as shown in limits .
the indica's thermostat switch switches on only near red mark of the sierra's console meter marking of temperature.

And so i could confirm , all sierra running on normal fan and with 80 to 90% of temp mark by needle is normal.

Now monday , i am planning to make the thermostat to switch on even before the marked temperature.

that is i want the fan to run even before it reaches half mark.

Advantages in my car

since it has no thermostat , coolant freely flows.
so this fan + thermostat switch set up will help to maintain some temperature.

and fan cools it dam fast - On making a direct connection , it cool a full red mark temperature to Lowest point in just less than 6 min.

2 ways of verification.
One was the temp needle.
Another one was , when hot and fan starts , the air pulled by the fan is hot , and it became almost normal in 5 to 6 min time[evil]

For pictures , please wait for monday evening.

Reasons
i came home just now and typed this right away.
no pictures taken.
And there is a small function going on in home , today and tomorrow and day after.

And yes you guess it right , i was so keen in sierra that i came just now and every one is so curious of me missing . tired of answering each one , phew

So could not click pictures tomorrow and upload it right away , any how i'll try my best to upload tomorrow evening.

So now is the fan direct ? continuously running ??
checked on direct since temp went to max of max point.

No its not in direct. when it reaches the max point in console , that is the thermostat switch on point , the fan runs for few seconds , that is it , say for less than a min and the temp is back to 80% as in console.

And fan cut off - means temp is normal according to the thermostat switch.

so sierra owners who have high point in console and no boiling - as many report its absolutely normal.

Yet to test with ac , since ac belt is not fixed.
ac on or off , it temp is attained by the switch the fan will run and cools it - maintains a steady temp.
What i mean to say even at temp of max in console the temp is near 90 degree - thermostat switch temp of indica.

Have some plans on Monday - to make the thermostat switch ON even before 90 degree .

Also on mind , since there is need for some optimum temp for engine to run , kind of confused , should i leave it as such?
lets see[evil]
