Re: Does a car not slow down with accelorator off ?

That's probably the lowest engine can run comfortably without stalling, so ecu feeds fuel to make sure speed doesn't reduce and stall the engine/prevent engine knocking.

That's. the torque.
I had experienced it many times.
Manza in 4th gear maintains speed for long distance with foot off the A pedal.

I have another issue. On changing gear from 1st to 2nd car like always jerks a bit. All other gears are perfect smooth. Am pushing lever fully rightward too and hav tried in many rpms. Still not v smooth. Shud I get it checked ? Hav driven 40kms till now plus 22 it came frm showroom already.

That sounds like you haven't completely adjusted to the clutch of your vehicle, which is perfectly natural since you haven't owned/driven it for very long. Have you been rev matching, or trying to?

now the jerks have reduced quite a lot after some usage . my gear changes still are same only. havent been rev matching as it happened only on upshifting.

I have a few questions as im new to driving.
1) Is it ok to keep clutch pressed and brake during traffic stops or does one need to keep in neutral during red light etc ? will it affect clutch or mileage ?
2) Is it ok to use handbrake during incline driving ? like on inclines bumper to bumper i pull handbrake and put gear and lil accelerate and put handbrake down. is it right procedure ? if i dont use handbrake either it stalls a lot as im not fully used to clutch or else races ahead as i press too much accelerator or clutch.
3)During braking from like 5h gear to say 20 speed for bumps is it ok to clutch it in and brake to needed low speed and slot to second gear direct or should i go to 4th then 3 then 2 ? which is best for engine and clutch.

@puneet, which car it is?
Its a grand i10
. still get jerks on 1st to second shift especially if upshifting under 2k rpm

Hello Puneet, I saw the pics of your Grand somewhere on the forum and I must tell you that you and your car; both looked awesome in the frame. Ala, made for each other

Let me try to answer all your questions one by one:

1) During the traffic stops, it is advisable to keep clutch and brake pressed. Why so? Actually while driving in traffic, if the number of stops is more but the stopping time is hardly 5-10 seconds then better not keep slotting around from first to neutral and back. In case of red lights, traffic jam etc you can follow the rule of turning to neutral. I personally follow the rule of turning engine off too in case of 120 second red lights and time of at least 90 seconds remaining.

2) For now you can use handbrake but the situation actually gets very tricky when you are in the middle of a traffic jam on an incline. For now, use the hand brake but develop the clutch-accelerator balance too with time. How to develop that? Practice, practice and practice. Where to do? Of course not on the flyovers of expressway. This Sunday, take 4 of your friends and hit the NH8. Just ahead of Manesar is a wide curved incline, there you can do some proper practice.

3) Shift directly from fifth to second, no issue. Rest I would recommend use engine braking+rev matching type of shifting. How? When you see the speed breaker, just leave the throttle and let the vehicle slow down. Now keep shifting down according to the speed and let the engine braking do a good part of slowing down. Rest in case of sudden slowing down, it's the brake pedal to hit and shift down directly to third, second or first based on the speed to which you have slowed down.

Getting jerks while shifting from first to second? No issues at all, next time when you do that, just press the accelerator slightly (needle around 2000 rpm) and gradually release the clutch, the transition will be super smooth and your passengers wont even recognise if the gear is changed.

Dear Team Members, What difference does it make if you drive SUV with 3 alloy wheels & 1 normal steel wheel ?
It doesn't make any major difference. Otherwise there might be technical details involved as steel rim might be heavier than alloys and will have small effect on tyres, handling and suspension.

How does one change gears to maximise clutch life and mileage? is it leave accel , press clutch full , quickly change gear asap , leave clutch quickly. however my car when i leave clutch quick it always gives jerks. is one supposed to leave clutch slowly ? this specially happens on 1st to 2nd in my grand i10

Clutch is meant to give a sliding contact in the transmission. When you change gear, if you let go of the clutch quickly, the difference in speeds of the transmission and the wheels will give that jerk. So you must release the clutch slowly.

If you are doing all the basics right, there is no other real way of increasing clutch life. Clutch plates are meant to wear

thanks. yes its smoother when releasing slowly.

btw till first service or 1000-1200 kms what rpm to keep my petrol car in ? i know riding at diff speeds etc. but when to upshift ? i mostly upshift at 2-2.5. today as i did 750 kms did a few speed runs between 2.5 to 4k max and touched 100 once. is it ok for best running-in to get max mileage from engine. will change oil and filter in first service too.

Yes it is fine. In the run in period, one has to expose the engine to a variety of conditions to ensure that it beds in well. You can constantly play with gears, RPM and speed but make sure you don't stress the engine or car. Stay within 80 kmph and 4k RPM to be on a safer side.

I eould beg to differ slightly. These modern engines are robotically assembed & given a break in at the factory, so restricting to 80kmph is not really necessary. I would say just drive normally and conservatively. Shift under 2~2.5k. Drive in comfort mode rather than in a sporty way. Dont over rev in any gear i.e. dont drive the gear till you frrl the engine is straining. For lack of a better way to describe what i am saying.

Come on 2-2.5k is too early for a petrol. [;)] I agree these are modern engines, where ECUs rule, but still to be on a safer side, one can follow these steps. The owner manual also states instructions regardimg run-in for all cars I think.
