Re: General Doubts of New Car Buyers & Owners

Please don't take offense, but I would recommend that you take some good driving classes (I've heard good things about Maruti Driving school) to learn the basics of operating a vehicle before risking your own and others' lives by taking it onto the public roads.

I hope you have a driver's license.

1086 cc = 1086 cubic centimetres which is the total displacement of your engine's cylinders. Rounding this up gives 1.1 Litres = 1.1 L.

How to drive a new car

Hi,

Received delivery of my new Swift VXI on Tuesday & including the drive from the warehouse to the company showroom, it has done about 100km. My question is how ahould i drive it to improve its longevity. It drives different from my old waggie & i have found myself doing 40 in 2nd gear several times unintentionally. But when i put it into 2nd at 20 & 3rd at 30, it seems to judder just a bit. So i want to know should i drive it normally or slowly, should i run it everyday, etc etc. Please suggest

The funda is you should neither allow the car to judder nor over revv it in any gear. Just follow as per the gear shift suggestions given in the user manual and that will suffice.
The swift vxi should be fine doing 30 kmph at 2nd gear and 40kmph at 3rd.
Since you have upgraded from a wagon-r, very soon you will get used to it.[:)]

Don't be concerned too much and enjoy your car[cheers].

Does your car have a tachometer? That can be incredibly helpful when getting used to a new car.

What has worked for me in the past is looking up the rpm where the engine produces the most torque and trying to remain within ~1000 rpm of that number.

Sorry if that's too complicated, but I'm an engineer at heart [;)]

Hi Viru,

then we are talking heart to heart[clap]

My car does have a tach but when driving in city traffic, I really don't have the bandwidth to glance at the tach. There is a case in what you are saying though. I have noticed that there is a surge in power higher in the rev band. For example, if I hold on to 2nd longer, I get a sudden surge in speed at some rpm. I will get the co-driver to keep an eye on it and inform.

That's the best way to talk [:D]

True, but after a few weeks of keeping track of the revs, you will get used to the feel of the engine at ideal rpm!

Yes, I believe I know what you mean. Colloquially we refer to this surge as "climbing on the cam," typically due to fuel-air mixture enrichment and the ratio used to calculate power output (Horsepower=(Torque*Rpm)/5252).

Sorry, I got carried away there. Basically your car's maximum Torque output is at 4000 rpm.

Dont exceed 3000 rpm for the first 500km on any gear and 4000rpm from 500-1000km. Post first service i.e. 1000km you can exceed thhose rpms.

Do not run the bike at a constant rpm for long distances keep varying the rpm but make sure you are not stressing the engine.

Queries after car delivery

Hi All

Happy to inform you that I took delivery of my buzz blue XMS RT on saturday !
Overall delivery experience was ok and it took over2 hrs for us to exit showroom with my beautiful zest .

I will share my overall experience soon.
As of now I need your expert comments on below

1.I had asked to remove 3 minor scratches to be repaired before delivery(some of you might remember I had posted pic last week) . Unfortunatley the scratches were still there at the time of delivery. showroom guys tried to apply something and reomve it, but they could not. I did not stretched it much as I did not want to spoil 'happy' mood of delivery.
2.demo was not much detailed. some of the infotainment features, even the SA was not able to figure out. Ironically I only showed him bluetooth operation :)
3.Showroom had arranged garland, pooja thali. But no welcome kit'. SA repeated the same tape again that "zest is new car so no freebies." I did not want to waste my time and mood for 'this tape' so ignored it
-ODO read 92 km (it was 80 km when I inspected at stockyard)
4. I have received below docs
-RTO registration and tax receipts
-tax invoice
-insurance cover note (photocopy only)- SA told they have given original cover note to RTO -- IS THIS CORRECT ??
-userguide
-3 free serviceing coupons
-battery warranty card
-SA told that they have already put 5 ltr petrol. The distance to empty showed 50 km. so I bought his claim about petrol.

SA said there are no seaparte coupons for 333 confidence program. That 333 program/warranty is assoiciated with my chassis number , so all service centers will know it automatically when I go there.

IS THIS TRUE ??

I asked for form 22 , but SA said form 22 they submitted it to RTO ( is this true ?)

I have not opted for any accessories as the dealer prices are un-realistic and my dealer is way behind rest of the world when it comes to zest accessories.

MORE questions -

1. There is no buzzer for remote locking & reverse mode.
2.how to test if car's anti theft alarm is working fine ? there is no alarm when I try to forcefully open door from outside while imobilizer is enabled (i.e. car is locked)

As I know remote locking or reverse buzzers dont come factory fitted. so f I get these installed from aftermarket. wil this void warranty ??

This is my first car , so I need your advices as I will slowly get thourouly familiar with my ZEST

Many Thanks in adavnced

During 1st free service, carry the before delivery pic and show to the Works Manager of the concerned dealership. Tell them to repair the same FOC. Should not be much of a issue dear.

2.demo was not much detailed. some of the infotainment features, even the SA was not able to figure out. Ironically I only showed him bluetooth operation
Some SA just know how to take money and sell the car. They aren't provided proper training.

3.Showroom had arranged garland, pooja thali. But no welcome kit'. SA repeated the same tape again that "zest is new car so no freebies."
That is subjective dear. The SA are not permitted to provide freebies. Its upto the customer to negotiate.

Driven from Stockyard to Dealership.

Why? RTO does not demand a original insurance copy to the best of my knowledge. At time of Delivery the insurance is issued to the buyer. In the billing of the vehicle insurance charges are charged from buyer, then for what did the original insurance go to RTO? Driving without original RC and Insurance can be troublesome. Be on SA's head and get it first.

SA said there are no seaparte coupons for 333 confidence program. That 333 program/warranty is assoiciated with my chassis number , so all service centers will know it automatically when I go there.

IS THIS TRUE ??
Check with any other TATA Dealership in your locality to confirm the claim.

Fitting an aftermarket central locking and reverse camera will definitely void warranty. Best is you go for a gear lock.

This is my first car
[clap] Congrats. Zest Up your Life!!

Thanks Akash1886. I was asking about original covernote (not the insurance policy) I was told by SA that the original policy will be mailed to my address within next 30 days. till then I can use the photocopy of covernote.

Now anyone has idea about - do we get original covernote at the time of delivery ?

another question

I had word with my friend just now, he works for TATA parent company in insurance section. He has told that Zest Policies are issued by TML (Tata Motor Limited) so is your policy given by TML? If it is by TML then you can ask for an online copy. 2nd thing, It is highly possible that SA has messed up since the original cover note is given to owner and photocopy goes to RTO for registration purpose.

For 333 program, will inform you tomorrow as my friend went to sleep now!

Sachin, I have the official feedback that during car delivery the buyer should receive original cover note in lieu of Insurance policy and the xerox has to go to RTO. The cover note should be stamped and on company letter head. Under any circumstance, the original is not given to RTO.

About 333 program, I have the official hard copy of the PPT on 333 Zest program. Here is slide 1 for your comfort dear. As per my interaction, at time of delivery, no physical brochure etc is provided about 333 rather it is implied that any Zest purchased till 31st December 2014 is to provided with 333 program. After 31st Dec 2014, this scheme is closing down and all Zests shall be entertained as per invoicing only for availing the 333 program.

Thanks Akash.

I have not finished reading the user manual yet. so I have a query(may sound weird)

Where is't written that the my car is covered under 333 program FOC ?? I did not a get warranty doc from TML at time if delivery. So in future, if TML service center refuses to entertain my claim, wht proof I have ??

I just talked to TML customer care. The guy said, yes it's true that there is no warranty doc issued at the time of delivery for 333 program, but sir TML will never refuse the warranty claim because we have advertized and everybody knows it !!

such an answer I got from TML CC. what proof I have for free 333 program ??

please advise

Sachin, the biggest proof is the purchase invoice of the vehicle. Also, the sale of your vehicle is recorded in TML's sales log so as per the invoice and sales record with TML it is imperative for them to give your Vehicle 333 program for free. TML will not refuse the 333 program on any Zest that is purchased till 31st December 2014.
