@ xS 400, please ,elaborate on ' somewhat enterprising' driving style.
I am shocked to know that most fuel efficient petrol car from msil stable gives 10.5 kmpl.
Is it bcoz of AT?

And welcome to wonderful world of TAI.

@XS400, Even I am scocked to know the FE of Maruti vehicle. My M800 gave me 12-13 in city [100% AC] and 18 in Higways [80-90% AC]

When my sparky is not that efficient, I used to think that why i have not taken wagan-R Duo [even though I had it in my mind, i did not considered it seriously] or A-Star [Since it was only petrol model I did not consider it at that time]

Its an AUTOMATIC. So this is a good mileage.

'Somewhat enterprisingly' means, I ignored the transmission, even though I could sense that it was not going to upshift as I accelerated. If you do it gently the transmission will upshift quickly into a higher gear, giving much better economy.

I am amazed that the AUTOMATIC gives 10.5 kmpl with this kind of driving.
I'm sure other AUTOMATICS will give much less.
Some have quoted 6 kmpl (for i10 or santro dont remember) in garbage city traffic.

The other thing is at the stop light, you hold on to the brakes to prevent the car from moving, which in itself must be consuming a lot of energy. (If I lift my foot off, it will take off at 5-10 KMpH). Maruti need to add a autostop/start to their auto cars like Mazda. [I do stop the engine at long signals, but garbage city signals are notoriously 'lazy', even otherwise]

Hope this puts everything in the right perspective!
The A-Star is a very fuel efficient car otherwise (non auto).

Why don't you put it in neutral mode and engage the hand brake?

some time back I used to get 12.75kmpl in city(50% AC) and 16kmpl in highway(50% AC) on my Spark LS 2010 model.when i complained about poor mileage to the chevy showroom guys(the time when i visited the showroom to have a look at new spark),they told me most of the customers are getting 15 to 16 kmpl in city.i wondered how?'drive in 5th gear even at low speeds(around 30 to 40kmph) then you will get 15kmpl in city' that was the solution given to me by the showroom guys. After that i tried switching to 5th gear early (at about 40kmph speed) and maintaining as for as possible in 5th gear(till getting knocking sound or struggling to pull),now,my mileage has slightly improved getting 13.50kmpl. I want expert opinion that driving 5th gear at low speeds can cause any damage to transmission?

@thenali, please follow instructions given in owners manual about speed ~ gear, do not believe on those guys, knocking can ruin the engine.

Please get the fuel line/pipes for mild leakage at a responsible mecanic under your supervision, remember petro l evaporates easily even before it drops down so don't tell me about parking floor.
Now a days rats are doing such wonders to fuel lines.

Please ,do not forget to read ' Tips to improveFuel economy ' thread on TAI, the link is at the bottom of this page.

Dear thenali, I also get 15-16 KMPL in city in my Spark. however it seldom goes below 14 depending on traffic condition and AC usage. I get around 20KMPL regularly on highway without AC. With AC it always remains 18+.

My normal driving style in city:

I upshift at around 1700-2000RPM.

I skip gears depending on the speed of the car. for example I generally shift to 4th from 2nd and to 5th from 3rd (when speedo shows >40kmph). but I never let the engine to knock or struggle. I mean to say, I just feel the engine and drive at highest possible gear.

If you try too hard to drive at lower RPM and lug the engine, fuel consumption will increase on the other hand.

Hi All,

I have a maruti 800 - without AC, 1993 model, giving me 18 kms consistently in city driving conditions.

Highways - 22 kms/kmpl. Infact, got 25.5 kmpl on a continous driving for 3 hours from Hassan to Bangalore highway which was ultimate drive I can never forget in my life 4 months ago. I was totally stunned with such a great performance which I never dreamt of. Proud of MY TINY.

Cheers,
Girish

Thanks dear lucas, iam also upshifting gears at around 2000 rpm,but not skipping gears. iam very light footed, still iam not getting good mileage.i have to satisfy with 13kmpl mileage in city.most of the spark owners have reported mileage around 12 to 13 only,so,i have to live with that.[frustration]
