Update-284.4 Km run in Highway and about 50 Km run in City.Total-337/18.93=17.8 Km/l.Which means 18 Km/l.

After Service average-453.7/28.36=16 Km/l.
Overall(before and after service)-259.8+453.7=713.5 Km.Tank filled inside-9.43+3.77+9.43+18.93=41.56L.
Total=713.5 Km/41.56L=17.16 Km/l.

Best-22.9 Km/l[clap]
Overall-17.2 Km/l[thumbsup]
Worst-11.67 Km/l[frustration]
Before Service-19.68 Km/l
After Service-16 Km/l

For better Mileage, Are different driving styles need for the normal petrol engine and the turbo diesel engine?

I am asking this because, When ever i had discussion regarding the mileage with one of my friend who owns a new model swift diesel, he tells that the ASS guys told him to rev in each gear to get a good mileage. he is doing the same in each gear and while riding in his car, i can feel the turbo works in each gear. but this makes me riding with him uncomfortable.each gear shift effect the passengers. he is getting an overall 15-18 km/ltr mileage with A/c. But i feel this is less for this car. On My esteem type 3, i am getting 14-15 km/ltr with A/c in my driving style (i'm a sedate driver and mostly my car will be under 2K rpm on my driving) and when he driven my car for a 200 km trip, 12 Km/ltr is the mileage we got.
For petrol engine, you need to mantain the engine in a comfortable range of rpm, because most of this engines has good torque past 2000RPM, so if you try to get speed below that, you are losing money (of course it depens on the engine, some engines with high compressión rate, and long crankshaft (piston stroke) can have a decent torque below 2000RPM, but are just few). Diesel engines, specially turbo diesel, has a good torque on a wide range of RPM, so you can press throttle pedal at differents ranges of RPM and it doesn't increase the consumption of fuel too much, for that a diesel engine with a sedate driver and spirited driver can give you similar mileages, because of their great torque. If you rev in every gear a turbo diesel you will not lose a lot of mileage, but sure you will get a little better mileage if you take advantage of the great torque at low RPM (they have max torque around 1500RPM usually) and you will have engine for more kms

Guys, based on past few posts it seems, it does not only matters that right speed at right gear, but also right speed, right gear and right rpm also matters for best fuel efficiency.

Can some one help here with those ratios/standards?

The ratios would be different for modern petrol and diesel engines.I think Maruti's range in petrol is 3500rpm and Honda goes all the way to 7000rpm.

Also not all cars come with tachometer as standard equipment.

As tip, I always try to change gear every 15 km/h, so 2nd at 15 km/h, 3rd at 30 km/h, 4th at 45 and 5th from 60 km/h (If I had..), and that can have modifications depending on the power I need. For example if I need to mantain 25 km/h for a while without need to get more speed (as in congested city driving) I just keep in 3rd gear

Do not know whether it is correct. I observed from my two wheeler.
When you raise the accelerator to normal level, you can see the vehicle going smooth with normal sound. If you raise the accelerator further, you start getting a sound. Either you move to next gear or reduce the speed to keep the sound normal. If you have RPM meter (Tacho meter), you can see the vehicle start giving sound if it goes above 2800-3000 (2.8-3.5 in meter).
If you see it goes to 3.5, reduce the speed or put the next gear (3 to 4 or 4 to 5).

According to me, I do not worry the RPM when i overtake. I will be putting on 3rd or 4th gear and RPM would be always above 2.8x1000 while overtaking. Except that, i always try to keep the RPM under 2.3x1000

By the way the recent trip of 930KM, i got a fuel efficiency of 19.6
Method (Started with middle line of fuel indicator. After the trip, filled the fuel to reach middle line again)
Vehicle Swift Dzire
3 Person + Luggage
AC ON All the time
More details here

But in My Maruti Esteem, Idle RPM is 850 and at the 2k RPM in 5th gear, car would be doing 90km/hr, so there is no chance to keep the car in near 3.5k RPM in 5th gear or else i had to drive the car in 3rd gear always.

I found yesterday the following my sparky.

Always the idle RPM will be 600-700.

When I am in top gear, upto 1500 it is okie. If i go below 1500 RPM the vehicle not chocking but it is suffering a lot to pull. Suddenly i go down to 4th gear.

Fresh update (post 2nd service) (Punto MJD 76 hp, )
Pers: 2 (adults) + 1 (2 yr)

AC on full time except during hairpin bends, only 12 Km done once reached Yelagiri.
It is surprising to know that you had to switch off the AC on hairpin bends.what's the reason?

My trick to get good FE on highway is to take the RPM levels where turbo gets fully chraged i.e.250,0 in top gear and then take the foot off the pedal .And then keep pressing the accelerator pedal momentarily whenever I feel the speed is decreasing due to subtle slopes or otherwise so as to maintain the RPM near 2500.

Done with 5th Service (40K) on Friday and had a Road Trip to Yelagiri. The FE isn't improved in anyway even after the service. The FE was 15.3 KMPL.

Metro Ford is suggesting for a Mileage Test, however, I am not sure would that be the best way to find it.
Planning to visit FASS tomorrow for Mileage Test. Let's see how it works.

Figoian, just a suggestion based on my visit regarding the same problem with CASS.

My sparky has got very less FE and every time I used to get feedback as "Let it cross 10k Sir, then only the accurate FE can be found". After last service which was when the ODO shows 10361 KM I got the same problem low FE.

I visited CASS, and with the tester we drove for 40 KMs and when we checked the FE it was 18. I was happy. I asked him to accompany when I do the same test for same KM, but he did not saying that he got other works.

You can have a loot at the link for full story if you want.
So I did it alone on the same day and found the FE was 10.

Then I told them that some problem with Auto Cut-Off method and wanted to know is there any device for that.

Then they said there is a device called Mileage Tester in which we can fill exactly 1 Ltr fuel and find the accurate FE.

I request you to ask for that device before accepting anything from FASS.

Sethu - Thanks for the inputs. FASS said, they will tank it up, drive and tank it up again to check the FE. I think, that's the only method they follow.

Any idea how that Mileage Tester works? Did you test using that?
