Ford’s child part strategy to drive down ownership cost of the EcoSport

Ford resorted to a two way approach to reduce the cost of ownership. The one way being heavy localization, which not only makes way for competitive production cost of the cars but also reduces the cost of spare parts basket to a great extent.
Implementing the child part strategy is the another way of making ownership affordable. Ford has successfully reduced the repair costs of Figo and Classic by making use of this concept.

The child part concept is integrated at the design level itself so that the critical components of assemblies like alternator, doors, starter motor, piston short block and fuel filter assembly are available separately. Earlier, even if a small component in any of the aforementioned assemblies fail, the whole assembly has to be replaced but now only the particular component can be sourced and fixed.

For instance, if the connecting rod or piston rings get damaged, they can be replaced separately now while earlier, the entire short block assembly (piston, rings, pins, connecting rod) needed replacement.

Mr. P.K. Umashankar, Vice President-Customer service of Ford India told IndianAutosBlog.com on Monday that the Ford EcoSport will have a heavy localization of about 80-85% and will also benefit from the child part strategy. He also said that same will be the case of all the future Fords.

Earlier this year we learned that Ford does not have immediate plans to manufacture the Ecoboost engine in India. It is also learned that Ford is offering 3 engine options on the EcoSport – 1L turbocharged petrol, 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5L diesel, paired to 5-speed manual and 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmissions. The AT options may not come paired to a diesel engine. The EcoSport will be launched in early 2013.

Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has already gained immense popularity. This 3-cylinder petrol engine has already won the 2012 International Engine of the year award and will see its India debut in the EcoSport compact SUV. In Europe, this 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is already powering a slew of vehicles, including the D-segment Mondeo. Ford is expected to power a range of cars with this compact motor and we could see the Fiesta and Figo receiving this powerplant in the future.
We all know how tight airport security is, especially in the United States of America. Now Ford went ahead and proved how small the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine really is by putting the engine block in a suitcase and carrying it as an inflight baggage. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is yet to be announced for the American market and will make its debut State-side at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show later this month. It might power the American Fiesta.
Ford unveiled the EcoBoost engine in India at the 2012 Auto Expo. This 1.0-litre, turbocharged motor produces 118 BHP of power and 170 Nm of torque between 1300-4500 RPM. This small capacity EcoBoost engine has an OverBoost function which increases torque output to 200 Nm at high RPMs. The OverBoost function is available for a select period of time and the ECU disables it for cooling after frequent usage. The Ford EcoSport will be powered by this 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and is expected to be launched in India by March 2013.

Ford India release more details on the EcoSport mini SUV

The crossover has a water wading capability of up to 550 mm which may not enable you to cross a river or a stream but will certainly be a boon during monsoon season flooding.
On the safety front, the EcoSport scores one up against the Renault Duster with side curtain airbags and traction control.
The car will have a cooled glove box, a 60:40 split rear seats and around 20 storage spaces, making the cabin flexible and practical.
The powertrain options include the 1.0-litre Ecoboost turbo petrol motor, 1.5 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel engines. Transmission duty will be handled by a 5-speed manual or 6-speed Powershift Dual Clutch automatic transmission. The latter is likely to be offered only with the 1.5 litre petrol engine.

Pricing ! Pricing is all that is going to matter. The feature lists seems to be promising. But I would keep my fingers crossed until the price lists are out. If Ford is able to bring the benefits of localisation into the price its surely going to be a seller. If Ford prices Ecosport the same way as in the case of New Fiesta Sedan its going to be another failure for sure.

Re: Exclusive! Ford EcoSport Makes Global Premiere: Coverage on Pg.3

Success for Ford in the India came a bit late. The Escorts, Mondeos and Fusions did not work well in the Indian market. True success came in the form of the Ford Figo which hit the sweet spot with the buyer.

The Ford Figo could run neck-to-neck with the competition from Maruti and Hyundai.
Unfortunately, the success was very short lived as Ford dropped the ball with the new Fiesta. Due to its price and a cramped rear seat, the new Fiesta just couldn’t convince the Indian buyers about its virtues.
However, the American automaker faces yet another do-or-die situation in the Indian market. Ford India is getting ready to launch the EcoSport in India by March 2013, according to our sources. The man entrusted with the job of launching the Ford EcoSport is Ford’s turnaround specialist Michael Boneham. This is his swan song as he will retire from his position of Managing Director of Ford India in December.

Michael Boneham and his team are burning the midnight oil to make sure the EcoSport gets everything right. The most challenging task of the launch will be to derail the Renault Duster that is now a common sight on the roads. Clearly, pricing will be the most important factor if success and EcoSport can be framed into a sentence.

Ford has modified the EcoSport to make it a sub-four meter product. As a result, it has to pay up only 12% excise duty instead of 24%. Ford has also opted for a 70% localization and would increase it over time.
Ford will launch the EcoSport in both petrol and diesel avatars on D-Day. The diesel EcoSport will automatically turn into the volume spinner. Ford believes that India will also appreciate the 1-liter EcoBoost petrol engine chiefly because of its fuel sipping qualities.

Ford EcoSport Long Wheelbase Showcased at China
Yatharth Singh Chauhan | November 24, 2012 | Comments (0)

Only recently, we talked in detail about the upcoming Ford EcoSport compact crossover. The eager awaited car was recently showcased at the Guangzhou Auto Show by Changan-Ford- a JV which sells Ford vehicles in China.

The China-spec Ford EcoSport is longer by 39mm and all the extra 9mm of length is courtesy an increased wheelbase. The Ford EcoSport will enjoy sub-4 metre duty cut in Indian market. In China though, there is no such duty benefit. Also, Chinese market is known for appreciating long wheelbase cars. Regulars here might remember we reported in detail about the long wheelbase BMW 3 series that was recently launched in India.

Powering the China-spec Ford EcoSport will be a Normally Aspirated 1.5 litre petrol mill which has peak power-torque output of 109PS- 138Nm. Changan-Ford will offer transmission options of 5-speed manual and 6-speed Powershift automatic gearbox.

The much publicized 1.0L EcoBoost engine will make it to China sometime in mid-2013. The Ford EcoSport can be bought in Chinese market in three variants- Comfort, Fashion and Titanium. However, the Powershift option is available only on the mid and top end variant.

Re: Exclusive! Ford EcoSport Makes Global Premiere: Coverage on Pg.3

Indian Autos Blog got an early opportunity yesterday to interact with Ford’s newly appointed Managing Director Mr. Joginder Singh and his predecessor Mr. Michael Boneham in Chennai.

There was no agenda to the meeting, and hence no tension was sensed inside the hall. This led the two gentlemen to loosen up and put forth thoughts and ideas to the select group of media representatives quite informally.
Joginder Singh -
I’ve worked with Michael (Boneham) over the past 12 months, I have big shoes to fill. The base plan going forward will be the same – we have to launch 8 products by mid-decade. Our customer touch points will have to be increased to 500 by that time. Figo was a game changer, and the EcoSport is expected to be even more transformational. This mini urban SUV will prove once more that we give what the customers want.
My job is not only to implement the One Ford strategy, but implement it in the Indian market conditions. Exponential growth is around the corner, our big story is the EcoSport next year. The SUV segment is growing very strongly.
I’m impressed with India’s talent pool. For instance, the ‘child part’ strategy is an Indian innovation. We’re now exporting this idea into global markets and platforms.
Michael Boneham -
I made a commitment to my youngest son that I would return home and spend more time with him. The past 5.5 years has been a very long journey and I’m honoring a personal commitment. Joginder Singh has been running our business services over the last 12 months in Chennai.
A few years ago, Ford was a niche player with 30,000 units annual production capacity. This year it is about 130,000 including exports. We manufacture 250,000 engines a year. The interest rates on automobiles is having a big impact on our business.
I’ve been working in Ford for 28 years and I’ve never seen 7 plants crop up in under 3 years. These plants are in China and India, and this hasn’t happened in any region of world since the 1940s. 70% of Ford’s growth over the next 10 years will come from the Asia Pacific and African regions.
We’ll become a volume player when we have 4.4 lakh units annual capacity – this is when the Sanand plant (in Gujarat) comes on stream. You need to have high levels of localization and hit the price points to be a volume player.
