So here we can conclude that Diesel Ertiga is fetching around 15-17 KMPL overall average. I always go for fuel around 29-30 litres and covers distance around 500km so avg is close to 16 KMPL in all mixed condition. The MID is still 18.5 for a long time but real time it shows mostly 22-30 for steady driving and during sudden gear change 7-14.

questions to experts:

1: Can we reset the MID value?
2: Is the MID value is trust worthy, which is showing 18.4 for last 3-4K.
3: I believe real time mileage indicator can be trusted.

Here are some tips to save fuel:

The bold one I started practicing :

MORE MILEAGE MORE FUN

Drive between 45 & 55 kmph.

It has been established by trials that you can get up to 40% extra mileage at 40 kmph as compared to 80 kmph.

Avoid accelerating or decelerating unnecessarily.

Incorrect gear shifts can lead to as much as 20% increase in fuel consumption.

For city driving, change to a higher gear when you are sure that the engine will not have to struggle.

Get into top gear as soon as possible.

Check wheels for free rotation when your car is being serviced. Binding brakes restrict free wheel movement and the engine consumes more petrol in order to overcome resistance.

Riding the clutch causes loss of energy and damages the clutch lining.

You can save as much as 6% fuel through regular tuning of car. If your engine emits black or dark grey smoke has poor pulling power or consumes large quantities of oil, have it checked immediately at an authorized service station.

Your air filter prevents air from fouling the engine. Dust causes rapid wear of engine components and increases fuel consumption.

Make sure that the fuel tank cap has a good rubber seal.

Unnecessary loads increase fuel consumption. A reduction of weight by about 50 kg can lead to a 2% saving in fuel, when driving in the city.

Under inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, which leads to higher petrol consumption and faster wear of tyres at the sides.

MID average can be reset by long pressing the right side knob. The average is always a cumulative value of mileage since it is reset last time. I observed a 5% correction(lower side) between the MID and actual mileage if the car ran without much stopping. Means that if MID shows 18, the actual would be ~17.1.

But in a stop-and-go traffic where engine runs idle for long time, MID shows lower average than actual. This is my observation so far. Anybody else did such a "due diligence" [:)] on this ??

On my ertiga the Average is always showing 16.7 kmpl But when I do a manual calculation I get 17 - 18 kmpl. But the DTE is the one which is not correct. When I halt for example I see in DTE as 200 but after sometime when I start the car it shows 300 but when I ride for just 1 km it will reduce to 250 then in another 1 km it shows 180. Also at the low fuel it shows 40 and I guess to ride atleast 20km but in another 2 or 3 km the low fuel light glows. Same kind of DTE issue seen in ford Figo also. But the manual calculation of tankful to tankful brings smile [:)]

I never get a good mileage when I drive in 40Km speed. I have observerd on all cars that I used. It gives better mileage only at 50 to 60km and some what similar till 80km. There is a drastic change in mileage when it cross 90km. I would recomend a speed of 40 km in city and a max of 80km in highway or bypass roads to get better FE.

Yesterday while going back to home, I reset the mileage indicator and at the end of 33 KM drive found that average shown was 20.XX and now today morning from home to office 28 KM the the average dropped to 19.1.

So I can assume that my average for daily commute is 95% of 19.1 = 18.145. I am pretty happy with anything more than 16.

Since you are from Bangalore, you will be the best person to ask about mileage.

Can you tell me about your driving style ? You have mentioned 17kmpl. I was under impression that Ertiga gives 14-15 in Bangalore city. If it is giving more than than it will be lovely.

Also it might depend on your driving conditions. Like driving on NICE road, EC toll road etc. Do share more details plz.

Also how is the pickup in Bangalore. Is the turbo lag so annoying ? If i am not going to race beyond 40-60kmph in city traffic will i feel the turbo lag ?

I look forward to buy Ertiga and only concern is about its mileage in Bangalore city and highway drives(18-19?)

I typically drive on old airport road and ORR for work 30km every day. I dont drive rash too. So what kind of mileage can i expect on Ertiga ?

I drive it modestly, and most time I will be alone or with my wife. These days I started practicing use correct gear at correct speed. In dense traffic I let car scroll itself with light foot on gas

Yes, there is lag but now I am used to and this is my first car so cannot put comparative experience. Use correct gear and let the car accelerate gradually

Mileage is pretty decent with this car and do not forget it's one solution for all your needs. Feel like sedan and can carry seven people. In common Indian family not all 5.10 feet so last seats are pretty useful. I did 1000 km trip with 7 people on board and last seat by occupied by my wife and her cousin and they always wanted to be in last seat as it was good to sleep.

I am still new here, so no PM options yet.

Mostly i too drive with 1-2 ppl on weekdays. Its only for weekends i need more seats.

So what is the RPM you maintain to get good mileage .? I drive a petrol swift currently and i keep RPM pretty low in city conditions( never go beyond 1500) But i dont think that will work with Diesels.

So when do you upshift ? Do you wait to reach 2K RPM before changing gear or the car can pull ?

My average RPM is around 1400-1600 and during upshift I do as per car speed and situation. 3rd gear after 20-25 KMPH and 4th after 40 KMPH. If need a sudden push the press the gas in 2nd gear and change to 3rd gear and move on.

No worry, I will PM you my contact.

This happened with me twice, where after that i drove 45,50 kms.And when i got my tank full, filler got cut off at 37 liters.

My Car is Ertiga Zxi.

Just 1500 KM old. On DTE the average mileage is showing constantly 14.5 to 15.5.
I beleive this will increse once after some more KM on the clock.

My ZDi is 2 months old now, giving me an average of 17KM/L, in mixed condition.
Runs daily for about 12 km (AC on while return , as early morning weather is quiet soothing) and has cloaked 925 KM so far.

Out of the Total cloaking 300km is on highway.

My ZDI has done around 7,000 kms so far @ 10% - City; 50% - Outskirts; 40% - Highway and I am getting around 17 to 17.5kmpl on an average. I am moderately fast, not exceeding 100 - 110 kmph even on highways. The best I have got it 18kmpl on recent long drive in express highways, surprisingly at higher speeds in the range of 100 - 120kmph highways + 60 - 100kmph on state highways.

In summary, there cant be more economical vehicle for this size and this state of engine tuning.

I used to get 11-13 kmpl, so i changed my driving style. Now I get 15-17 kmpl in peak hour traffic in Hyderabad

That is awesome so what did you changed in your driving style, your tips would help us too :)

PS: I do not own ERTIGA as of now, but planning to but ZDI very soon.
May be this thread enlightens some facts and I may need to change my decision
It is very true that there is a FE dilemma when choosing between Petrol OR Diesel vehicle.
I am running my old petrol Zen (2003 model, with 1.7 lac KM done) she gave me around 20 KMPL (with AC) on highways earlier, but now I can only get around 17-18 KMPL on highways (with AC).
