Re: Buying a Dashboard Camera – Advice & Discussions

Hello @Yogi_77,

Your idea is very nice and I like it. How about placing it in middle of dashboard? For wide view or it would obstruct driving visibility?

If I'm not mistaken, the screw is 1/4" which is also present in cameras for tripod attachment. So for that, you can find different mount adapters or holders like the following:

Durable Professional 1 4" 20 Tripod Mount Screw TO Flash Camera HOT Shoe Adapter | eBay

Multi Purpose 1 4" Mini Tripod Ball Head KIT Shoe Mount FOR ALL DSLR Camera NEW | eBay

Windshield Window CAR Suction CUP Mount Holder DVR Digital Camera Camcorder | eBay

Suction CUP 1 4 Tripod Mount Holder Adapter Attachment FOR Gopro Hero ANY Camera | eBay

and more in ebay India.

Thanks...
Best Regards

@CRACING - Exactly the mount is standard 1/4" one, hence you can find the required mount for it on ebay etc. In my Zest, I thought the extreme right hand side placement would be ideal for clear field of view while driving [thinking]

But now even placing it in center would be fine [:)]. That plastic part with the mount came in the package so one would not need to buy it seperately. I have alread stick it with fevistick in that particular position hence cant move it now. Can get it from a friend of mine who owns HTC RE as well..

Any further questions about this setup, you guys are welcome [cheers]

Yes, If we use adhesive to stick the camera then it wouldn't be easy to remove so I advised for removable mounts which stick on windshield with the help of suction cup.

Did you used Fevistik (but that is only for paper) or Feviquick ([shock])? Favibond or 3m double side tape would be better because these are removable without damaging surface.

Btw; Please share some recorded videos (Including night) if you can. [:)]

Very Good Idea about DashBoard Camera - But Guys you forgetting some important thing about Car Dash Cam.

1. Long Video Footage File (Multiple Small File)
2. If the Micro SD card is small - Then Auto Loop Recording Function.
3. Unlimited Time of Camera Function - (Meaning as long as the car is moving or engine is running) - Which need power from the Car to the Dash Cam.

So 2-3 hours Video Recording Time is nothing.

why would you need 2-3 hours of footage ? i would be interested in only a minute of footage , god forbid, if something happens.

You didn't get my point -

Say If a user set journey for 7 hours to reach a destination, His camera filled up with first 2-3 hours of footage file with out any auto loop recording function and important incident may take place 4th / 5th hours....what is the option here ?

Top Up Battery in the middle of the journey ? Or Replace Micro SD card ?

Or if there is multiple incident - like something to report at local police station for others sake - you need multiple footage....So in this cases Storage and Recording Time Does matters.

@Arijitb

I agree with your points. HTC RE is not a right device to use as a dashboard cam because it lacks many things compared to a real dash cam.

No display
No heat resistant
No night vision
No 480p recording (To use less memory)
Short Battery life
Power port is in the bottom so cannot plug in power cable when fitted to mount or a diy is required.
and all those dash cam features like G-sensor, Loop Recording, Auto On/Off & etc.

However, if one owns a HTC RE for its actual purpose then he can also use it as dashboard cam but buying it only for use as dashboard cam is not advisable.

Re: Buying a Dashboard Camera – Advice & Discussions

HTC RE can take upto 128gb of memory cards. So capacity is not an issue if you stick with 720p resolution. Night time videos are pretty usable.

Yes, the micro usb port is at the bottom of RE hence you cant charge it while mounted on something but if you manage to stick it to something like back of IVRM via tape or something then you can charge it as well. At first I thought about the same. But Since I use RE for other purpose as well hence did not take a chance with it.

RE is IP57 certified but no idea about its heat resistance. But with ac on that should not be a major problem.

You can use your smartphone as remote viewfinder & control RE via the app as well, ie take photos, videos or time lapse videos etc.

@jazzyb5454

I have been using this GT300 dash cam from last 2 months and I am quite happy with the same, please refer the below link for youtube video which I have updated some time back. I fixed the Dashcam in my Jazz's IRVM to avoid unnecessary attention.
https://youtu.be/wVlI_5F0Foc
This dashcam supports upto 32 GB memory card and we can only record upto 2 hours of full HD video continuously since the size of 3 minute full HD video comes around 800 MB. Apart from this I did not find any issue with the same and I feel its worth the money spent.

^^^ 3 min Full HD (30 fps) video must be 300 - 350 MB not 800 MB, It is too big for Dashcam. Did you check the frame rate settings ? Is it set to 60 ?

Novatek 96650 chipset is the only chipset from Novatek that can record full HD videos but its price is > 40$.

The one that abhicbnair has is (maybe) of Novatek 96630. I am assuming this since the link given by Jazzyb doesnt mention the chipset model number.

I checked gt300 comments and 1 indian buyer said the chipset user is "generalplus"

But the specs mentions the chipset manufacturer - novatek.

Can you post a link which will be the best one to buy ? I ordered 3 things yesterday from aliexpress but didn't order the camera because of the same confusion.
