An alternator should cost you anywhere between 3.5k-5.5k INR if its a TVS. i mean, i don't know the cost exactly for spark but for marutis it comes up to around 4k-4.2k INR. so the figure i have given is just a guesstimate. i don't think that this part will be covered under insurance. Insurance is only applied when there is a accidental damage not for part which has aged and died.
The guy told me it would cost maximum of 5k. But he mentioned servicing.

should have asked him what would the part cost if it were to be replaced. if its only servicing then it might be fault of carbon brushes or the coil which i doubt would add up to that figure. again i don't know the Chevrolet part costing so i might be a novice in this area.

this is the list of pricing for different types of alternator from TVS pls go through might help.

so now as you know the cost of the new part. you can offcourse question the service person as to why does it cost 5k only for servicing and if it costs so much to service, might as well replace the part with a new one. that ways you know it will serve you for coming years.

Oops. I think am lost. Just now I called that person after seeing this post. He said he had got back the alternator from TVS and it seems some of the bearings and other things gone and it was replaced. And again he said service charges could be around 5K. When I enquired about new one he is saying that it will cost me around 17K.

I think the car must be ready in 3-4 hours. And there is no point in going for new one since they have already did the servicing. He also confirmed that there will be a warranty of 6 months. (but its our luck that always a product will get Konked of only after the warranty period[frustration])

Guys.. Back again..

My sparky had managed the chennai water very well. Had to drive it in knee level water more than 15 KMs distance 4 or 5 times. Easily managed. But the after effect was very bad.

I had got tough power steering, lot of belt noice, all doors become very tight etc.. etc.. Unfortunately could n't give vehicle for service due to flood of cars in all service centres from flood affected areas (its been more than 3 months, still all service stations are full like anything). Finally got slot last friday (booking done 10 days in advance).

Apart from general service did the following

Some wetness in passenger side floor - Due to AC water
Changed left rear tail lamp set - old got broken, water went inside and 10 days before stopped working
Rear door hydrolic changed - old completely gone.
Whiper blades
And other misc items
Along with general service
Break cylender in read wheels (unexpected)

Total cost was 14986.

In addition to this SC guy said, since the car was driven in waters, all the greese in the wheel bearings (all four wheels) has gone and they need to change it. Also he gave an option of driving it for another 5k KM and then change it. I prefered the second one. I think it will be nearly 4/5 months for me to reach 5k. So by Apr/may i can think about it.

Now after service car is good. Smooth.

Some of the recent photos of my sparky..

My car bill for its 5.5 year service in tvs chennai was, 18500 rs.. The service was done before the floods. Sethumurugan-- your bill after flood damages is low. I think tvs in the name of preventive maintenance replaces parts unnecessarily more than other asc's

Actually from the day one am with ASC only. This time, if I would n't have got appointment I was thinkng to go with MyTVS since I was very desperate for service. Luckily I have got the booking.

Since i have changed Rear left tail light set, Rear door hydrolic, whipers the cost were up by 4k. And as a surprise they wanted to change the break cylenders which was 2.5k. Otherwise it might have got over by 8 or 9k.

Guys.

Recently had a nightmare with my sparky.

Planned to visit Kumbakonam from chennai as devotional trip. Left chennai with family around 7.30PM on 26th. Planned to reach kumbakonam between 12 to 1 and take rest. Finish holy bath by sunday morning, visit my sister in nagapatinam and start to Chennai around 3 PM on sunday.

When I was going between Ulundurpet and kumbakonam, middle of the road engine got switched of abruptly in middle of the road. luckily the road was desorted and unlucily it was dark. no vehicle before or after. It was like middle of some kind of jungle. if am alone or with other friends i might have managed. But this time I was with my family. Wife got scared a lot. I opend the bonnet and found heavy smoke was comming near coolant tank. Somehow guessed there could be a problem in collant. Then cranked the engine it started. Drove slowly and found a fuel station in 1 and Half KM.

Equired about coolant water, the guy who was there in night did n't know about it. Really do not know what to do. There were few lorrys were parked and found one drive near it. He helped me to get coolant water, mix it and fill it (never done that before so do not know how to do it).

Then managed to kumbakonam, and nagapatinam. At nagapattinam before leaving filled the coolant water. After starting, just after few KMs stopped for filling fuel. After filling fuel, found all coolant oil were leaked. do not know what to do. But do not want to stay back.

So bought a bottle and started the journey. Reached PONDY and checked once. Found the level was gone down. Again filled and started.

Worst part is A week before only gave it for service and i had told them there is some kind of wetness in passenger side front seat as complaint. When taking it from service I was told that it was because of AC water leakage. But during my entire trip i saw the wetness was there again.

So after reaching chennai, took the car to service center. Usual executive was not there so other person took the car. When I explained to him, he immediatley told me that the wetness was due to coolant water leakage. I was furicios. They are so dump that they did not even checked properly and they have not topped up the coolant water also. if they would have done it they might have know it.

Finally i said i will not pay even single pie but i want this to be rectified. They agreed and did eveything. and charged only for the coolant water tank cap for Rs. 400 saying that the valve in the cap is struck that is the reason due to preasure as soon as the vehicle is stopped all collant water got leakedout.

Now after 100/150 KM drive checked the collant water level it is full. Happy finally.

Learnt in this insident.
  • Always check the basic things like coolant oil, engine oil etc even when you start a trip after service.
  • Always keep a stock of collant oil or some emergency oils before you start long drives.
  • When you get smoke from the front, first dont panic. First see what it is and then decide (do not know whether am i right or wrong in this point)
  • When you travel with family in state highways, pls make sure to travel in day time or in peak hours.

Finally nice experience where i learn lot of coolant water, its usage etc. But hard-way of learning.

Where did you service your car?
Has the water leak problem rectified, it is a problem with all sparks, the passengers kick the drain pipe so water gets leaked. Asc will give stupid reasons and will tell you to replace condenser/heater coil etc. Using m sealant will solve the problem.
I did service at sundaram tvs and not mytvs.

I regularly service only with Chevvy service center in Ekkatu thangal.

Yes the problem is solved now. Only thing is heater will not work since the part is not available he redirected the line.

What was the reason for the problem and what part is needed for the heating effect.

Collant water will go thru AC unit also. For me in that part some leakage was found. When I told first time, i was told that, the wetting problem was due to AC water. But later found that it is collant water.

For that the hose/part which takes the water thru AC unit need to be changed (Which makes the heater works). Since the part is not available, they are directed the hose without going into AC heater part. That is the reason they have told me Heater will not work.
