GM India introduces Chevrolet Sail U-VA at Rs. 4.44 lakhs

Finally today GM India launched its game changer, the Chevrolet Sail U-VA, in 4 petrol and 3 diesel variants, here in Chennai.

The car is offered in 7 colours. GM is launching the Sail U-VA simultaneously in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai today.

Designed and developed with its Chinese partner SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), the Sail is China’s second best selling vehicle and is also the most exported vehicle in China. Over 5 lakh units have been sold worldwide since its launch in China in 2010.

GM has carefully modified the Sail for the Indian market with the engine and suspension calibrated for local conditions with ground clearance improved. Here are a couple of slides from a presentation that summarizes the changes on the India-spec Sail.

Chevrolet Sail U-VA prices (ex-showroom Delhi)
Chevrolet Sail U-VA Petrol
Base – Rs. 4.44 lakhs
LS – Rs. 4.83 lakhs
LS ABS – 5.18 Rs. lakhs
LT ABS – Rs. 5.57 lakhs
Chevrolet Sail U-VA Diesel
LS – Rs. 5.87 lakhs
LS ABS – Rs. 6.19 lakhs
LT ABS – Rs. 6.62 lakhs

This is bang into the Swift category. Priced 30-40 K more than I expected. Given its neutral offering, but slightly premium pricing, I wonder if it can create a stir in the segment. For me, this is how diesel hatchbacks in India appeal to potential customers:

Value for Money hatch with decent performance - Ford Figo
Excellent engine, trusted, service back up - Swift / Ritz
Rich man's toy (Plush feel, good engine) - i20
Fan of German engineering, performance doesn't matter - Polo
Cute, appeals to women, easy to drive in city - Micra

Not sure where Sail fits here. Maybe the first category. But will a buyer pay 60K over a comparable variant of Figo is to be seen.

On a separate note, very happy to see that Chevy has made Driver Airbag standard across variants. This is only the second hatchback in the country after Micra to offer this.

Re: Chevrolet Launches Sail UV-A Hatchback (Details on Pg.9)

I would have thought GM would price this at par with the Figo, its real competitor in the truest sense. Given that pricing is higher by 40K.

They may target and compare this with the Swift in their Ads (as Figo does), but I doubt GM would be able to dent the loyal Swift following.

I talked with GM SA today just after launch and the only good thing he has to say was that it has loads of space. Not trained yet I guess on the UVA, but very difficult time for GM given their best seller Beat had a sharp decline in sales in October.

In the above slides for India specific development, its mentioned that GC has been increased.
I checked GM site (Technical Specifications) and GC is mentioned as 168mm for Diesel. Hence not sure how it has been increased as earlier too it was 168 mm, which by the way is quite low for standard Indian conditions.

This car looks good to me. Yes agreed it is kind of bland but hey sometimes bland is the way forward. I got some info that the Diesel engine is well tuned for FE yet decent power too!

If GM want Sail to sell like hot cakes, then they would have lowered the price a bit [:)] which could have given some immediate reason for customers to consider

Given all the cost cutting and simple interiors, I feel that the price is slightly on the higher side. For a company with a sales record like Chevy, this is an optimistic pricing.

If I were to buy, Figo still comes as an attractive package.

Quite agree. Even considering 1.4 Duratorq is old, its still VFM.

Saw Sail launch through webcast.. what they are trying to market is pick existing items, package it and market is as their own. For e.g, taken Fiat's multijet engine (jointly developed with GM) mated with advanced gearbox (similar to one you get with Toyota or VW) and say that its the first time this has happened.
True that this combination did not exist, but then does not call for a separate launch event [:D].

Hmm...Maybe a fan Italian styling or a frequent highway traveller [:)]

Otherwise it is difficult to get so convinced about buying a brand that seems disinterested in the Indian market
