I must say everything is well proportioned here starting from the pricing dept to features dept.
+100
First thing i liked was the styling, it's a miniature cruze, pleasant looks overall. Nicely positioned tail lamps and the boot which is very decent looking than the nudged dzire.
Spot on many people in the showroom actually said it looks like a mini cruze .

Interiors is little below the best, but a nice and airy interiors is really a good deal for the one who buys it. Its a nice thought to provide cup holders in the rear seat, boot space is big enough to carry whatever you need.
Interiors are way better looking then etios and verito and ford classic IMHO .

Pricing, yes they have played well, don't know it compares with the competition
.
Cheaper then the etios , dezire and if not mistaken even cheaper then the classic ford and verito .
The interior color somewhat did not please me, for i would like it with black combination which makes the car much premium looking in the segment.
+100.

Shock pricing for Chevrolet Sail saloon
Chevrolet has launched the Sail saloon at a very competitive starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh for the base petrol variant.

General Motors India has launched the Chevrolet Sail saloon with a very aggressive starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh for the base petrol model. The tepid response to the Chevrolet U-VA late last year has led Chevrolet to revisit their strategy when it comes to pricing its products. The competitive starting price of the Sail saloon has left even the dealers surprised, as this is just about Rs 60,000 more than that of the hatch variant.

While petrol variants are priced from Rs 4.99 - 6.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the diesel variants are on offer from Rs 6.29 - 7.51 lakh. This puts the Sail saloon right in the epicenter of the ultra-competitive territory of entry-level sedans. The Sail saloon is powered by a 79bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel motor. The diesel motor comes mated to the F17 gearbox with ratios tuned specifically for India.

The company’s claimed fuel efficiency figures are 18.2kpl for the petrol and 22.1kpl for the diesel motor. The base trim comes with power steering, front power windows, electric folding wing mirrors, tilt steering, a digital tachometer, engine immobilizer and a 12V power outlet. ABS and EBD come standard on all trims.

While styling may not be radical, the Sail saloon is quite pleasing to look at. The split grille with the bowtie emblem links the new saloon to the rest of the Chevy range. The car looks quite smart from the rear, thanks to its near-vertical tail section. Available in seven colour options, the Sail saloon will come with a 3 year/1, 00,000km warranty and 5 year/50,000km warranty on the powertrain. Chevrolet has no plans to launch an automatic variant anytime soon.

2013 Chevrolet Sail Test Drive Review

in CHEVROLET SAIL

Chevrolet Sail – Click above for high resolution picture gallery
Car tested: 2013 Chevrolet Sail

Price OTR Mumbai: Rs. 7-9 lakhs (est.)

The Chevrolet Sail is high on practicality, which is imperative to a large chunk of buyers.
Mid-sized sedans are seeing increased demand in India, with sales improving gradually over the past few years. Today, the mid-sized segment is quite crowded with many products on offer from a slew of manufacturers, both local and international. General Motors entered this segment long time back with the Chevrolet Aveo, a vehicle which tasted little success, due to the lack of a diesel engine and intense competition. Now in its second go in the Aveo segment, GM has armed the Chevrolet Sail with a potent diesel motor, which is sure to appeal to a larger section of buyers. So does the Sail sedan impress?

Exteriors – The Sail notchback is the sedan version of the Sail U-VA hatchback and thus the styling of both vehicles is almost identical till the B-pillar, post which we have slightly bigger windows for a better rear seat experience. However unlike some sedans in the segment, where the boot seems to be an after thought, the Sail has a well integrated boot which doesn’t look out of place. The tail lights are big and the rear bumper has nice lines too. The overall styling of the vehicle is conservative and the styling won’t grab eyeballs but neither will it offend anyone. The neutral design of the Sail puts it across as a simple vehicle where function precedes form.

The neatly integrated boot doesn’t look big on the outside but offers enough space to carry big bags. The loading bay is slightly high but overall SAIC has done a fantastic job to ensure the Sail’s rear is not an eye-sore like the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.

Interiors – GM has made absolutely no changes to the dashboard of the Sail sedan over the Sail U-VA hatchback. The interiors are almost identical too and there are minor changes like softened seat cushioning and fixed rear seats (the hatchback has folding seats which boosts carrying capacity). The interiors are not a lively place to be in and overall quality levels are average at best. The use of beige colors on the interiors does give the Sail an airy feeling on the inside. However the plastics are hard and the steering wheel feels quite an over thought, with no color co-ordination whatsoever.

The Sail sedan is expected to fill the shoes of the erstwhile Optra, which was known to be a loaded vehicle. Sadly GM has thought otherwise with the equipment list of the Sail, which doesn’t get steering mounted audio controls, on-board computer and climate control. What the Sail sedan loses in terms of interiors design appeal, it makes up by offering loads of space. There is ample amount of legroom and headroom on offer throughout the vehicle and every occupant will be comfortable inside the car. Seating five is not an issue thanks to the centrally placed fuel tank. There are quite a few storage areas too and the doors have generous pockets as well.

A few things which GM should have fixed in the Sail sedan but haven’t is the power window switches which have been placed right ahead of the gear knob. There is no dead pedal nor driver’s seat height adjustment on offer. The instrument cluster doesn’t feel much intuitive either and the tachometer should be switched with the speedometer. A digital speedometer and an analog tachometer is easier to understand, rather than the other way round. The Sail does get keyless entry and a feature laden audio system which has AUX, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Overall the cabin doesn’t feel special but is quite practical and there is loads of space to be utilized. We would have liked if GM would have offered more equipment, at least on the top-end variants.

Performance – Powering the Sail sedan is the same set of engines from the Sail U-VA hatchback. Which means you get a 1.2-litre petrol engine, even though the Sail is not a sub 4-metre compact sedan. GM chose the 1.2-litre engine over the 1.4-litre engine in the interest of fuel economy. The 1.2-litre engine is also a generation ahead of the 1.4-litre engine. The 1.2 Smartech motor is not the best when it comes to NVH levels but offers decent performance from the 86 horses it has on tap. In-gear acceleration is good and this motor feels best in the mid-range but the rubbery gearbox does take away from shifting cogs smoothly.

The more popular engine of choice will certainly be the diesel, which uses the highly acclaimed 1.3-litre Fiat oilburner. This motor has been tweaked by GM engineers to befit the Sail for better city drive-ability. Power delivery is linear and although turbolag is evident, it is relatively contained. Mid-range from this engine is fantastic and there is good progress between 2000-3500 RPM. The top-end is not as punchy though and power trails off quickly at around 4000 RPM. GM has used its own gearbox on this diesel engine, which has short throws and the overall experience from the diesel Sail is very positive.

Driving Dynamics – The Chevrolet Sail has decent stability at high speeds but the steering doesn’t feel as direct and involving as some of its Japanese rivals. While the steering is light at low speeds, making it easy to maneuver in city conditions, it doesn’t weigh well enough as speeds build up. GM has improved the steering on the petrol model which feels slightly better. Handling is decent though there is some amount of body roll which is marginally more than the hatchback. However the ride quality is simply fantastic and the Sail blows you away by absorbing bad roads in its stride with utter confidence. We took the vehicle on the worst possible roads around GM’s Talegaon facility and the Sail thoroughly impressed us. Braking performance is good with ABS on offer on top end variants.

Verdict – The Chevrolet Sail sedan thus comes across as not much more than a Sail U-VA with a boot but in this case, the boot has been integrated very well. GM has retained the interiors, engines and features on the sedan, with its hatchback sibling. There are a few shortcoming like the lack of features and average steering feel, but the ride quality and space more than make-up for it. The 3-year Chevy promise on offer will make the Sail a very competitive car in the segment. Now GM only needs to price the Sail sedan very aggressively to taste success in the mid-size sedan segment. The Chevrolet Sail does offer plenty to the buyer but the company has to play the value for money card in view of intense competition from more established rivals.

Good interiors space, generous boot and splendid ride quality make the Sail sedan a very practical vehicle in its segment.

I liked the design element of this car, doesn't look as if hatch has been made a compact sedan. But following are still some Qs -

* Interiors look downmarket but better than Etios by miles. I feel Dzire is the best, even if we consider Honda Amaze as Brio interiors aren't that good,

* Basic question - Diesel engine performance, FE & maintenance. As Fiat's multijet is used in many car of different car cos, I would prefer to go with the Fiat engine than Chevy's,

* Maruti Showroom & after sales is very close to my current home & as there are many dealers with multiple branches in city, service, spares is not an issue. I am extremely happy with Chowgule of Maruti from where we purchased Dzire few months back. I would rate then 10/10. But I can't say same thing about Pashankar auto in Pune.

From outside sail sedan really looks good but interiors & engine are 2 things which I am sceptical about.

BTW, if you see, there is no 'Tachometer' in sail sedan. [surprise]

This is pic of Dzire 2012 interiors -

The tachometer is digital buddy . And interiors are robust and well screwed . The engine is same like the mjet because its devloped jointly by them and they have worked on the gear box and its much better then dezire and the space too is much much more .

The vdi dezire doesn't come with abs and driver airbag and music system , which the sail sedan ls ( abs ) model comes with in 8.27 lakhs on road .

And you don't have to worry about transmission and engine because Chevy gives you a 1,50000 or 5 year warranty on that .

You mean it shows rpm in digital format ? [confused]

Dzire Vdi goes for about 7.7L on road. I added accessories, mainly reverse sensors & alloy wheels which made the cost 8L. 57k diff is there between Dzire Vdi & sail ls. Now how many will pay 57k more for abs ?

+1 but still Maruti is Maruti & Chevy is Chevy. The after sales of Chevy in Pune aren't good compared to Maruti, especially dealer like Chowgule, who is the best dealer I have come across in normal brands.

Other prob is sail hatch has failed, which means people will be sceptical before buying sedan version. Dzire had ready made good will of Swift. Lets see how things span out though.

General Motors India hasn’t ever been really successful in the fast growing entry level sedan segment of our car market. The first small sedan from GM India, the Opel Corsa, could never be as successful as the now defunct Maruti Suzuki Esteem. The Chevrolet Aveo, which can be rightly called the successor of the Corsa, too couldn’t bring many customers to GM India dealerships.

While the Aveo sedan and Aveo UV-A hatchback were pretty well sorted out cars, the lack of an oil burner proved to be an Archilles heel for the duo.

GM India, however, is not the one to be demoralized by the poor sales-performance of the Aveo siblings and have launched the Sail sedan and hatchback in the Indian car market.

The Sail sedan, which is GM India’s weapon to fight with the high selling Maruti Dzire, has been aggressively priced and is well-kitted out to challenge the more established rivals in the entry sedan segment.

We recently drove the car to find out if it is sufficiently potent to challenge the high selling Dzire.

Chevrolet Sail Diesel Sedan Review

Space & Styling

The Sail sedan looks bog similar to its UV-A hatchback sibling till the B pillars, after which it gets different rear doors, a boot and chunky tail lamps. The car also gets new design alloy wheels to further differentiate it from the hatchback sibling.

The new Chevrolet split grille, upswept headlamps, a neat crease on the hood, a quarter glass at the A pillar, swooping roofline and 8 spoke alloy wheels contribute to a pleasant, albeit conservative, exterior design.

Full points to Sail for having a well crafted boot which gels pretty well with rest of the car. No Swift Dzire like quirkiness here.

GM has decided to keep the interiors of the car very similar to its hatchback sibling and has used the same panels and hence, you get the same dashboard layout, centre fascia and instrument console.

The plastics are of decent quality and the shades of beige give the interiors a feeling of being airy. GM India has adorned the interiors with faux-silver tid-bits to try and inject some premium-ness .

The Sail U-VA, which is positioned a full segment lower to its sedan sister, has won a lot of acclaim for having one of the more spacious cabins in its segment. The Sail sedan though, which by any means isn’t cramped, breaks no new ground in its segment and please head to a Tata showroom if you won’t settle for anything less than ‘limo-like’ rear legroom.

The Sail sedan has sufficient bootspace which seems adequate for swallowing the entire luggage you might need to carry on a weekend family holiday.

SPACE & STYLING- 7/10- Safely styled but pleasant interiors with sufficient space for 5.

Comfort and convenience

Ergonomics play a major role in making the car a wee bit more comfortable and enjoyable. It is saddening to see many manufacturers struggling with getting the packaging and ergonomics right.

GM though, has done pretty well in this department and the Sail sedan can be a good companion on long journeys.

The driver’s seat, though lacking in height adjustment, is adequately comfortable and offers a good lumbar support. The rear seat too is quite comfy and only the tallest of the passengers would yearn for more legroom. The rear seat passengers also get a foldable armrest to further enhance the comfort quotient for rear occupants.

The Sail also offers some storage space underneath its rear bench and comes with many storage spaces inside the cabin. The front door pockets are deep enough to carry a few magazines and have a dedicated spot for holding a bottle of water.

However, like almost every car, the Sail has a few shortcomings in this department. The first to catch our attention were the electric windows switches that have been positioned near the gear. While this isn’t a deal breaker for prospective customers, it sure takes some time getting used to the unusual placement of these switches. Other bits that take away the points from Sail are the lack of a dead pedal, no driver’s seat height adjustment and a high loading lip for boot.

The Chevrolet Sail comes with a long list of features that includes Body Coloured Bumpers, Power Steering, Air Conditioning, Power Windows, Power Adjust for ORVMs, Day and Night IRVM, Remote Fuel Filler + Boot Release, Engine Immobilizer, Body Coloured ORVMs, Foglamps, Rear Antenna, Chrome Inside Door Handles, Chrome Parking Brake Button, Leather Wrapped Steering+Wheel, Cigar Lighter, Key in reminder, Bluetooth enabled Integrated Audio System with a set of four speakers and keyless entry.

The list of Safety features on the top end variant include ABS, Driver and Passenger Airbags, Security Alarm System and Speed Sensitive Autolock system.

Comfort and convenience- 8/10: Comfortable interiors but we need a dead pedal and conventionally placed power window switches.

Engine

Powering the Chevrolet Sail sedan diesel is the same 1.3-litre, Multijet common rail engine that is found in most other diesel cars in the country. The Sail’s engine comes with a Fixed Geometry Turbo and has a peak power output of 77bhp.

Chevrolet India has done a good job with tuning this motor and the power delivery is pretty linear. There is no jack-hammer boost (a la Maruti Diesel cars) when the Turbo kicks in. This makes the car easier to drive in crowded streets and the smooth and precise throws from gearbox makes the car even a more relaxing drive.

We took the car through its paces and a speedo indicated 150kmph wasn’t too big an ask. Such is the driveability of this car that it can be driven at speeds as low as 20kmph in fourth gear (Not something that we advise).

An ARAI certified fuel economy figure of 22.1kpl should keep the ‘average-conscious’ buyers happy.

ENGINE- 9/10- Easily among the better tuned version of the 1.3 Multijet..

Ride, Handling & Braking

Handling and road manners are something that can make or break a deal for prospective customers.

The Sail offers a comfortable ride and soaks in most of the craters that our roads are generous with offering. The Sail sedan is easily among the best riding small sedans out there.

Coming to the handling department, the Sail has a very light steering that doesn’t gain sufficient amount of weight at higher speeds and won’t encourage you to push it hard around the corners. The car also rolls a fair bit and leaves something to be desired when it comes to the handling capabilities.

The car gets a Front Disc-Rear Drum combo that provides sufficient braking force to haul down the car from triple digit speeds. The brakes feel reassuring and the optional ABS further enhances the braking capabilities.

RIDE, HANDLING, BRAKING 8/10- Top notch ride quality and decent brakes but we won’t want to take this car to a race circuit.

Overall

The Chevrolet Sail is a well sorted out car and is sufficiently potent to lock horns with the popular Dzire. The car isn’t sharply styled but has pleasant looks that won’t offend anyone. The Sail is spacious on the inside and is pretty loaded.

The top of the line variants get ABS and Dual Front Airbags along with keyless entry. The Sail’s diesel engine offers stellar fuel economy and is powerful enough for hurling the car to high speeds. The Chevrolet Sail diesel goes on sale with a starting price of INR 6.29 lakhs and the top end LT variant that we tested has a sticker price of INR 7.51 lakhs. Chevrolet has priced the car very competitively and at this price, the Sail looks all set to give a few sleepless nights to the boffins at Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.

OVERALL RATING- 8/10- Definitely a good alternative to the Dzire and the Manza.

Chevrolet Sail Specs:

Fuel Type- Diesel

Engine Capacity- 1.3 litres

Max Power- 77bhp at 4000rpm

Max Torque- 20.9kgm at 1750rpm

Gearbox- 5-speed manual

Width- 1690mm

Height- 1503mm
