Guys need your thoughts on this.

Today morning, I was running out of fuel in my Vista VX and took her for refilling. I don't know how much fuel was left in the tank but the meter was fully zero. As per owners manual, Vista's fuel tank capacity is 37 liters.

I ordered them for tank full of Diesel and they filled it with EXACTLY 37 liters of diesel. My question is, "Did the manufacturer advertised it wrong capacity or the fuel meter at the filling station is doing malpractice?"

I'm pretty sure the tank was not dry and at the least there should have been 1 liter of Diesel left in the tank [confused]

Are the filling stations still doing malpractices despite several efforts from the Govt to curb such things? By the way, this is a major bunk at a very busy area.

Hi,

Thanks for all the information. I follow all the steps as mentioned right from noticing the meter to standing near the attendant. But i have a basic question.

Below is the scenario i face most of the time.

Attendant: How much sir?
Me: 500.
Attendant:
Enters 500 without resetting to zero ( Note: The pump is resting in the stand and meter already had reading 100. i.e the previous person put petrol for 100 and the attendant simply typed in the numbers with the pump resting on the stand).
Then he takes the pump from the stand and started filling (Note: The meter started from zero) and the meter stopped at 500.

So my question is whether i get the fuel for 500(as the guy rested the pump on the stand then entered the amount and meter started from 0) or for only 400(B'coz of not resetting and previous value)?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, welcome to TheAutomotiveIndia.com,

The person in the petrol pumps usually resets the button to zero and notifies us that it has been set to zero followed by pressing the amount to be filled in.

By looking at the above scenario, i am sure he cons you. So next time, tell him to notify you that the machine is set to zero before filling in, also do that after you stand beside the attendant.

Welcome to TAI buddy. I believe when the dispenser is put on the stand or the guy manually reset it works same way. You will be filled for Rs. 500 only.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I too fear that he is cheating. But the attendant follows the same pattern for every one. And one more thing, the meter starts from 0 only after the guy triggers the gun.

So if he tries to cheat, then why the reading starts from zero?
What's the difference between the below two.
1. Reading is at 0 and starts from 0 when the guy triggers gun
2. Reading at previous amount and starts from 0 when the guy triggers gun.

This is what really confusing me. I have seen situations where the previous amount is set 1000 and attendant enters 500 without resetting and reading starts from 0.

Thanks

Sethu is right. If the gun is on the stand, it means its in standby mode. so there is no need to zero and then enter the amount. as soon as he lifts the gun, you should see flashing Zeros.
If the gun is in the hand, the assistant needs to make it zero and then enter the amount.

The only game they can try play is, enter 50 against your ask 200 and say "sorry i thought its 50" and with out making it zero they will pour to 150. they will then claim 50 is already put it and now i have put 150 =200 but actually, they will only pour 150 and you will lose 50.

Even if the gun is in hand and he entered the any amount , the dispenser will reset to zero and then fuel will start coming out.
putting the gun on the stand is to rest all the value to zero.

want to share my experience, where i was bluffed..
It was quite 4-5 years back...I usually fill petrol in my car at regular bunks at mulund west, but that day it was 1 am and the regular once was closed..Went toward LBS marg,we asked them to fill 700 rs petrol,a guy in safari(his clothes) appeared from nowhere told us that rear right tire has low air pressure..
Since worried, they took advantage of situation, went to check the air,it was ok..left the bunk in hurry..
after 2-3 kms,my dad was puzzled since the fuel gauge didn't came up,later we came to know that he filled only 200-300rs petrol, and we were bluffed...

Another situation happened when i was alone with my mom,me driving at chembur 2 years back
attendent:Kitna sab?
Me:1000rs ka dal.
that guy inserts the gun.
Me:are counter to set kar.
ATT:sir kharab hua hai.
(starts filling)

another guys tried to divert my attention this way.
ATT2: cash ya card?
me:cash.
(after 5 sec)
ATT2:cash ya card sab
me:(flashing cash) cash.
after a moment,i noticed whenever i used to talk with this guy,the guy filling the petrol used to stop the gun.
ATT2:cash ya car sir.
me:let him fill first, bad me dek lenge...

ATT:ok cash me de rahe ho na,
(still questioning how ridiculous)
me silent till fuel gets filled, without replying him.

after filling the the petrol,i hand over money to him with a smile, and told him,"Ye naya technic acha hai!!"

Annoyed, that guy started murmuring something.i just swooshed from there..

The basic rule in petrol bunk now-a-days are

never listen to anyone till you finish the task.
keep you eyes on the meter.
never sit inside the car allow attendent to fill fuel
It is always better to go with another person to make sure we are not cheated. I normally take my kidos with me and without telling them the matter, I made as a point to ask them the liters filled and amount we filled after leaving bunk. so unknowingly they started watching the meter keenly. Even my wife is trained in that department[:)]

But those guys are inventing new Technics always.

Ya its really shameless how they ask questions & try diverting you despite you seriously looking at the meter.A month ago i filled diesel for 1000 at a pump after picking up car from service(will update the review, had issues so waiting on it),guy goes on about cash or card, then goes on about petro card offer or something, then after filling he says sir fill for 200 more (which was unusual),I immediately clicked the car remote into lock & said sure fill up.They silently filled for 200 more & was a bit puzzled where i was looking since i had sunglasses on [glasses]

Since most car owners stand out near the fuel cap & look at the meter, you may never know if some one is trying to steal something away from the car(considering you were alone),remember there are no tints on the car now so they can see whats inside the car beforehand. You can easily be distracted by the attendants & your first instinct is to look at the fuel meter.

Petrol pumps are full of crooks, dont trust them one bit.Even if you knew an honest worker & he worked for some days at a pump,he will get a taste of easy money & change cos i have seen that happen with people who served & worked for me.

Ever wondered why the pump attendant asks you to bring your vehicle closer to the dispensing booth before he starts filling your vehicle up?

The dispensing hose is a long braided rubber tube. The closer your vehicle is to the dispensing booth, the more coiled the dispensing hose remains. Result? Some fuel that has been pumped from the dispensing booth will remain inside the coiled hose, something that would not happen if your vehicle is parked away from the dispensing booth (as the hose will remain straight).

So even when the meter shows that you have filled x litres, some quantity out of that x litres shall remain in the coiled hose.
