RK, Thanks for the concern. Generally I will be careful. But after me started reading this thread I am sure to be careful twice. I said the other guy face to face that "Hey dont distract me. Wait till I finish then you can ask all your silly questions." I think this alarmed the first guy who set for 10 ltrs and told me it set for Rs.1000.

Got alarmed again when I asked about the details about second line.

Thank god.

But the funniest part is, I realized the entire episode only after I left the fuel station.[lol]

I never take my eyes off the meter while refueling. From the people who shared their valuable experience here we should learn something. That is "Jago grahak jago".

What do you mean by that?

Ohh.. Yes I do the same, never take eyes from meter. But this time it was different. The numbers were very small and more over I was seeing in up-side down. That is what that culprit tried to capitalize.

@ Sethu:
What I have seen is the gun kind of fuel hose dose have a displaying meter for the customer but at the top only. It will have very clear visibility about the information like what we see in the normal ground petrol hose.
By any chance did you miss to notice that.

But anyway you are saved from those fellows [clap].

Whatever alertness you show, those guys will find new ways to cheat[confused].

@Amit, Yes I have seen what you have said. Even the hose is from top, at top a big display will be there. But in this fuel station it was n't there. But they had it only on the fuel nozzle which is inbuilt.

Sethu Sir,

Good to know you were not cheated. [:)]
It is for this reason, I stick to only 2-3 pumps, where I know bunk attendants personally. Assured of quantity as well as quality.

Hahahahahaha, that was funny, but you know something, sorry for bit OT here, most of the people notice lot of things after getting married, but it is one way always !!
Haha, this further gives boost to my logic why staying single is beneficial. Post marriage, one is physically present & mentally absent. [lol]

I just had similar experience an hour ago as searchinheaven did. I asked the attendant to fill fuel for 1000 Rs but he did for 200 Rs only. And when I re-instructed him to do what I said, he perhaps (as he said) re-entered the amount in the machine. But I am not sure if he did as I am not satisfied with what fuel indicator showed afterwards. I got the bill though of Rs 1000 from him. Now I am back home and thought of looking for similar cases on he internet and found this site which gave immense information. Is there a way to complain about such matter to some petroleum inspector, etc?

Welcome to TAI!

You can, and you should complain about any malpractices you see. First of all try to bring it to the notice of petrol pump manager. If you look around in the petrol pump, there would be some contact numbers provided for complains, you can try them too.

If you remember the retail company, try to visit their website and find out the relevant section for making complain.

Would like to share my recent experience in this regard -

I always prefer to fill up my Avenger 220 filling up the tank to the brim and then end up running it till its almost dry (i.e. 80-85 kms after it gets into reserve). Now I reached this Indian Oil pump in Goregaon E, Mumbai. There was a bike ahead of me in the queue. Now on my turn, I pushed the bike as I had switched it off, but meanwhile instructed the attendant that I needed 'tank full'.

At this point of time, the attendant pointed to the bike (which was taken out after a month, so was quite dirty) and started giving me advice that I should keep my bike clean especially the parts near the tank. Now after filling it upto the brim, I found that the meter showed more than 14 ltrs. I was quite sure that tank capacity of Avenger is either 14 or less. And also, realized that the guy didnt showed me zero.

With a straight face, i asked ki 'meter main pehle se kitna tha?' (how much was the reading before starting filling? Before, he could answer, I started shouting that how the hell he can fill 14 litres in a tank which has capacity of 13 litres with already 4-5 litres in it. I asked them to make a bill, mention the vehicle number and the model, and also asked them for the complaint book. Further, took out my cell and threatened the attendant directly, that I am calling the nearby police station and would certainly not let this go.

In the end, he agreed to take Rs. 300 less than what was on the meter of the pump!

My advice -

1. Be careful and attentive while filling fuel
2. If something smells fishy, be assertive even if you aren't that confident.
