Swift noses ahead of Alto, riding on diesel

For the first time in over seven years — 87 months to be exact — the Maruti Alto has ceded ground to stablemate Swift as the largest selling car in India.

The recent surge in demand for diesel cars saw the sales of Maruti’s premium hatchback Swift overtake that of the much cheaper and low
frills Alto in April.

While sales of the Swift have gone from strength to strength every month since its launch in 2005, Alto has been stagnating over the last 12 months as petrol cars have fallen out of favour with consumers.

Last month, Alto saw its sales decline by almost 30% to 17,842 units compared to April 2011, while Swift saw sales soar by more than 83% to 19,484 units during the same period.

While the Alto does not have a diesel variant, three out of every four Swifts sold in the country run on diesel.

“Last year diesel vehicle sales grew by over 37% while there was a 14% decline in the sales of petrol cars,” said Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer (marketing and sales), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.

“There is a huge pressure to sell petrol vehicles even with the high discounts,” he elaborated. “There is a tremendous shift towards diesel vehicles and we were caught flat-footed last year. This year we are increasing our diesel capacity by over 65%.”

With a price tag of over R4 lakh, the Swift costs almost twice as much as an entry level Alto. It still has a backlog of more than 1.30 lakh units, a waiting period stretching upto 10 months and no discounts on offer.

The rein of the Swift at the top of the pile, however, could be short-lived as lack of capacity and a de-regulation of diesel prices is likely to push Alto back to the podium.

“April was just a freak month and Alto will most certainly be back at the top,” felt IV Rao, managing executive officer (engineering), MSIL.

Ford's sales has seen a drop of 2.5% in April 2012 (7,319 opposed to 7,509 in April 2011). I will share the break-up figures shortly.

GM India car sales decline by 21 percent in April 2012

General Motors India car sales for the month of April 2012 stood at 8,005 units as compared to 10,050 units sold in the month of April 2011. The April sales comprised of 4586 units of Chevrolet Beat, 1953 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 821 units of Chevrolet Spark, 455 units of Chevrolet Cruze, 140 units of Chevrolet Aveo, 28 units of Chevrolet Optra and 22 units of Chevrolet Captiva.

In April 2011 GM India sold 3,889 Chevrolet Spark, 2,447 Chevrolet Beat, 157 Chevrolet UVA premium hatchback, 162 units of Chevrolet Aveo sedan, 376 units of Chevrolet Optra mid-sized sedan, 939 units Chevrolet Cruze luxury sedan and remaining units of Tavera MUV.

Commenting on the performance, Mr. P. Balendran, Vice President, General Motors India, said "The sales were not on the expected lines as uncertainty in fuel prices, hike in excise duty, and hike in local taxes in some states continue to put a lot of pressure on the automobile market. Also, a lot of purchases were advanced by customers in February and March fearing duty hikes in the Union Budget. With the RBI going for CRR cut to improve market liquidity and reducing repo rates by 50 basis points, we expect the market to improve in the coming months."

Hyundai posts 4.9% rise in April sales

The country's second largest car maker Hyundai Motor India on Wednesday reported a 4.9 per cent increase in total sales in April at 54,606 units.

The company had sold 52,057 units in the year-ago period, the company said.

In the domestic market, the company's sales went up by 10.9 per cent to 35,070 units from 31,636 units in same month last year, it added.

Exports of the company, however, declined 4.3 per cent during the month to 19,536 units from 20,421 units in the year-ago period, the statement said.

"Consumer confidence continues to be weak. Prices went up following the excise hikes in the Union Budget and interest rates are yet to come down. Given the present conditions it's a challenging market," director (marketing and sales) Arvind Saxena said.

In its A2 segment (Eon, Santro, i10 and i20), the company sold 44,891 units, while in the A3 segment (Accent and Verna) sales were at 9,579 units.

The A5 segment (Sonata) of HMIL witnessed sales of 66 units, while its SUV Santa Fe received 70 buyers during April, this year.

Dammit!
Only one reason - they are made by Fiat! Unfortunately they carry really bad baggage from the past (remember the likes of Unos!!!) People have not forgiven Fiat.

Fiat should take a leaf out of VW, make firm commitment to India, setup their own facilities and bring more relevant cars here. And for God sake, improve the interiors! Its very depressing sitting inside the Punto!

Surprising numbers by Hyundai Verna. 9579 units for Accent and Verna - does it mean about 8000 for Venra alone??? That would smash every record out there in this segment! Hyundai knows how to please us Indians

Congratulations Ford for selling 227 new fiestas , ford India must write a book now " how to kill a brilliant product in Indian market" .
And the book can co- authored by fiat India as they too have maintained a steady record of selling 300 lineas month on month basis .
We're as Hyundai is doing rock and roll with 6251 vernas sold.
Hell the accent is selling more then new fiesta and linea .

Truly...well said.

When one sits inside a punto after being into figo,or i20 or polo the feel is like from an MNC lounge to local barbershop...odd grey tone, poor fit n finish ,no unique premium(chrome like) touches etc.

Hey guys, what is the status of Skoda?

@Jayadev:Well said, what I believe is that Punto needs nothing else except a new and better quality dash with better fit and finish(maybe they can increase 10-15k for it which is quite acceptable, but still Punto 2012 is also not there).

If anyone can tell this to Fiat then ask them to make 500 limited edition Punto T-Jets and I believe that those 500 will sell out within a month.there are a lot of enthusiasts who start rubbing their hands even on the name of Punto T-Jet(I promise,I'll be booking the car on the day Fiat launch it).

And yes,I am sure it will be cheaper than Punto 90 hp.Why?
See the price list of Linea too.

Ah,I was expecting Bolero to be 10000+,there are a lot of new Boleros on the roads.

Ertiga seems to be emerging as the new UV segment leader. This month they haven't even got a complete month hence I am expecting Ertiga to eat up Bolero in May sales.

Scorpio,Safari,Innova:As usual,nothing new.
Safari is having a specific customer ground and those people can't be taken away by anyone else.
Scorpio...I am thinking of the days when it used to beat even Innova too one month with next month Innova coming back and vice versa.

XUV:No doubt, the king always rules. But I am more surprised to see that scorpy still sales more than XUV.

Aria:Good downfall observed, either Tata wake up or Aria will sleep forever.

Yeti:As usual, again its the SUV of some specific people and hence it will keep on selling in such numbers only.

Simply 2 reasons -

1) XUV is priced much higher, hence out of reach for those who are already stretching their budget for the Scorpio.

2) XUV's bookings remained closed for most of the period.

3) Even if the bookings are open, there is that stupid lottery system which is a deterrent for many buyers. It is much 'simpler' to buy a Scorpio.

But when they have such long booked list then why don't they produce 6000 XUVs per month?
Lower waiting period will enhance sales even more.

Secondly:99% customers have herd mentality and hence this can easily make XUV cross Scorpy any day.About stretching, they have to get it on loans and for those people car's status means more than their bank accounts,so Indians are expert at stretching.
