Fisical 2009 sales figures from Rediff.

Cut and paste ... though I was amazed to find the Wag R ahead of the i10.

Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the Indian automobile market with its best-selling cars like Alto, WagonR and Swift.

Maruti Alto has maintained its position of India's best-selling model.

# 1: Maruti Alto
Sales in fiscal year 2009: 212,568.

Maruti Alto is India's best-selling car. The small car is still a darling of the Indian middle class due to its price, fuel economy and reliability. Another reason for its success is that it is easy to drive on congested Indian roads. This compact car also takes less space to park due to its size.

Launched in 2004, Alto has maintained its best-selling position in spite of the launch of new small cars by global auto majors. It had become India's first car to sell more than 200,000 units in one financial year.

# 2: Maruti WagonR
Sales in fiscal year 2009: 134,768

Maruti WagonR is very popular due to its dependability and fuel economy. This car has maintained its reputation of being a good car for family. Now it comes with sleek external design. It has attractive headlamps and sporty taillights.

The sporty looks of the car has made it popular among young executives. The car is available in LPG version also.

# 3: Tata Indica
Sales in fiscal year 2009: 111,256

Tata Indica was the first truly Indian-made car. The hatchback by Tata Motors is quite popular with taxi operators due to its fuel economy. It is available in both petrol and diesel versions. Tata Motors keeps launching new versions of Indica to keep the interest of car buyers intact in the car.

Launched in the year 2000, Indica did not sell well initially. Sales picked up after 2001 when Tata Motors launched upgraded version Indica V-2. Later Indica Vista was launched which enhanced the brand of Indica further.

# 4: Maruti Swift
Sales in fiscal year 2009: 110,071

The premium hatchback Swift is performing well for India's largest auto maker Maruti Suzuki. Within one year of its launch it became one of the highest selling cars in India.

Launched in 2005, the car has so much demand in the market that customers have to wait for months to get the car delivered to them. The car is popular due to its sleek design and driving experience.

The fastest selling car of its category, Swift crossed the sales mark of 300,000 units in the domestic market in February 2009. Swift is available in both petrol and diesel options.

# 5: Hyundai i10
Sales in fiscal year 2009: 106,095

The hatchback i10 has become the best-selling Hyundai model in India. The sporty looks, high-end technology and fine driving experience make i10 a best seller.

Launched in October 2007, the hatchback soon became one of the fastest selling cars in the country.

Now i10 is available with Kappa engine delivering power of 80ps@5200rpm along with improved fuel economy. The refined engine offers better fuel economy and is low on emissions.

# 6: Hyundai Santro
Sales in fiscal year 2009: 91,478

Santro was the first car model launched by the South Korean car maker Hyundai in India. It soon became one of the best-selling models of the country.

Santro is popular due to its pricing, fuel economy and dependability. The car is easy to drive and has a refined engine. The cutting edge engine of the car delivers peak power and optimal mileage. Santro is easy to drive on congested city roads and is also easy to park due to its size.

Yes me still also still wondering why other manufacturers have not decided to compete with the Alto! It still tops the charts with less competition!

The auto-giant's new offering in the 100 cc segment has also carved a leadership position in West Bengal and the entire North-East region by becoming the highest selling brand in the overall two-wheeler category, a company press release stated here.

"We were unable to meet the demand in February and there was a stock-out situation in some dealerships," Sridhar added.

Discover DTS-Si was launched in July last year. The company has already ramped-up production from the earlier 75,000 units to 1-lakh units per month to meet demand, the release said.

Bajaj Discover DTS-Si Electric is available in five colors at Rs 41,736 (ex-showroom Delhi price).

GM didn't have any car last year, so growth % has to be great. Same with Ford.

India's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India reported a growth of 11.04 per cent in its total sales in March at 95,123 units, boosted by the best ever monthly export figures.

The company had sold 85,669 units during the same month last year, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement.

It also reported a rise of 28.55 per cent in its annual sales during the 2009-10 fiscal at 10,18,365 units, as against 7,92,167 units during the previous fiscal, helped by a spate of new launches and product refreshments.

This was also the first time ever that an Indian car maker had crossed the one million units mark for sales in a single year.

In March, MSI sold 79,530 units in the domestic market compared to 73,855 units in the same month of 2009, registering an increase of 7.68 per cent.

Exports surged by 31.99 per cent to 15,593 units from 11,814 units in the year-ago period, it added.

This is the highest ever monthly export by the car maker, breaking the previous record of 14,847 units achieved in August 2009, the company said.

However, sales of the company's once bread-and-butter model M800 fell by 13.66 per cent at 2,430 units compared to 2,762 units in March 2009, it added.

Incidentally, the car -- the oldest model from MSI's portfolio -- is being phased out from 13 cities from today in line with the new emission norms which have come into effect.

The A2 segment (comprising Alto, WagonR, Estilo, Swift, A-Star and Ritz) also witnessed a fall of 1.18 per cent in sales during March at 54,763 units compared to 55,415 units in the same month a year ago.

In the A3 segment, sales (consisting of SX4 and DZiRE) increased by 21.61 per cent in March to 10,453 units compared with 8,595 units in the same period a year ago, MSI said.
