Look wise Bolero is much better but space inside sumo is beyond comparison.
Seat 4 people in mid row in both the vehicles, drive for an hour and take the feedback from people (do it with same set of people to make it control group). Bolero is cramped inside and can only seat 3 comfortably (taxi guys seat 4 in middle and total 10 people generally, once I saw 26 people inside Sumo, god know how did 26 fit in in Uttarakhand)

@Brijesh Pillai: Buddy, have you taken delivery of your GOLD? If yes then please share some pics and initial driving impressions with us?
not yet, this weekend most probably

PS: I am learning to drive on a 15 yr old sumo (I think), 2.8 kms on the odo and gear system ulta R (press stick down & up towards the left),1 (down),2 (cross up),3 (down),4,5. But it is fun, all others seem puny and I feel mighty !

on a serious note, irrespective of the number of years, the battle hardened look and the kms on the odo, whenever I turn on the ignition the engine growls to life and it seems that the car is fighting to rip ahead as soon as I let off the clutch a little

I dont need to use the throttle on the 2nd gear, it keeps on moving (is this a good thing or bad thing?)

cheers

Brijesh,
Most diesel will move ahead the moment you slot gear without accelerator input. Even <1000 CC beat does that. This is SUMO with 3L engine. Engine is damn reliable unlike smaller engines. Have fun

thanks, the instructor tells me to apply accelerator when I am moving off on the 1st and letting go of the clutch, since the car is already moving, is the accelerator input required unless necessary to gather more speed for some reason while moving off? what is the good practice

Slot 1st gear, release clutch slowly to a point when you feel vehicle is on engine, release breaks now and use accelerator but very softly. Do this, you will never stall in diesel at least, useful in getting out of parking, I never apply accelerator while reversing and never banged anyone so far. While learning, don't go beyond 3 rd gear, learn to drive slow (you will get the feel of steering, road, vehicle), once hand is set, you can speed up anytime and as much as you want.Enjoy

Bangalore,
It is hard to follow entire thread, I mangaed to read around 1st 8 pages of this thread.

I noticed few were saying SUMO design is direct copy of Merc G55 AMG but I disagree since TRAX also looks same from front,

I found one Interesting thing here the side PROFILE of BOLERO is also looks like copied from G55 only.

Find my pics below.

And I'm afraid to say some thing against MnM here since I may get a TAG of TATA fan boy easily so I'm trying to keep my view clear here.

I drove both for good KMs, infact my dad is a huge fan of ARMADA. I drove Bolero in lots of trips, I simple hate to travel in BOLERO and always cry to get in to Bolero for long trips, But no problem in cities and I enjoy driving it.

I drove Bolero for 1200km trip alone for 2 days and later I took 2 days to get settled for normal life. I got to say this that the vehicle was superb smooth and very proactive to move in any gear but I can complain about its RIDE quality and space, RIDE and SPACE is the worst areas of this car and unfortunately I buy cars FOR GOOD RIDE AND SPACE/COMFORT.

SO MY VOTE GOES TO SUMO GOLD for its good ride and space compared to bolero, now GOLD with new CR4 engine looks awesome for this happy car.

Guys in 2000 and in late 90's before toyota launched qualis Sumo was the best selling vehicle of tata.
And by the end of 2001 within one year after qualis launch sumo died.
Tata cut down the price to take on the taxi people but failed though some fell on it.
so as per my view sumo is history.

Bolero can be considered as an entry level UV,good pricing and a proven engine(Di).
And can be modified to good macho looks.

Ah! finally a person who agrees with me here, Yes Bolero has got the G55 AMG looks infact whenever my friend shows the pic of this g55, i tell him it looks like Bolero and he [frustration].

My parents hate the Bolero very much, because my mom who once sat in the rear bench seat felt claustrophobic and told never every am i going to sit there, and my father doesn't like the bonnet to be straight, he feels its too big to drive in the cities.

I now don't like the Bolero for the less powered engine it has got, Sumo is much better in this aspect.

Sorry i beg to differ here, Sumo is considerably gaining the Taxi share again, because of the extinction of qualis and not worthy bolero only in taxi market.

Bolero can be considered as an entry level UV,good pricing and a proven engine(Di).
It is CDRified now making same amount of power with good amount of low-end troque.

And can be modified to good macho looks.
Yes no one can deny this fact and the Sumo can't be modded like the Bolero.

Alex, I agree with you on the late 90's thing, but differ with you that sumo is died, no man 1000s of Sumo's are today used as prefered Taxi's in Hitech city, Hyderabad and I have not seen a single bolero for such purpose here. Boleros are used in the construction field more(the bolero campers) for material transportation and all government public sector companies use Sumo as their hired vehicle for inspection[:)]

Back here innova rules, Sumo doesn't get up from the fall new sumo's are seen on police departments on private board as tata give a huge discount say two free on purchase of eight.
New taxi board sumo's are very few and bolero taxi is also few though some departments own some on private board.
Tavera is somewhat back in taxi market.
Ertiga is seen on taxi board too.
People here are fast learners.

@vishwas

Tavera is still in the market and tavera sells much more than sumo as tavera is more comfortable than sumo.
