HTC One S won't receive any more Android updates

HTC One S, the premium Android smartphone from the Taiwanese company, will not receive any Android updates going further.

The development was first reported by French site HubFR, which spotted a comment made by HTC France on their Facebook page after a user asked about the company's plans to update the HTC One S to Android 4.2.2. The company replied that the phone won't be getting the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or the new Sense 5 update.

Following this, HTC also officially confirmed that the phone will indeed not receive any updates.

"We can confirm that the HTC One S will not receive further Android OS updates and will remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense. We realise this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed the HTC One S to be optimised with our amazing camera and audio experiences."

HTC One S was launched internationally in March 2012, so a little over a year old, so the development would definitely surprise the phone's owners. In fact, HTC had earlier said that the phone, along with the HTC One X, HTC One X+ and HTC Butterfly, would receive the Sense 5 update bringing software features from the HTC One, the company's premium flagship phone. Sense 5 offers camera-related features like Zoe, a refreshed UI and BlinkFeed home screen updates. This means that HTC One S owners would not get to experience any of these new features in addition to other features offered by Android 4.2 that include lock screen notifications.

Although the HTC One S (Review) sports specifications seen in mid-range smartphones, putting it below the HTC One X and One X+, it was launched at a price of Rs. 33,590, last year.

For a phone that costed above Rs. 30,000 (at launch) to not get updates, being abandoned by the company after a mere 16 months of launch, explains the current state of fragmentation within the Android device ecosystem.
Contrast that to Apple's iOS and you'll notice that iPhone 4, a three year old phone is slated to receive iOS 7, the next iteration of Apple's mobile operating system.

HTC One S was launched in India in June 2012, featuring an over-clocked 1.7 GHz Snapdragon S3 processor instead of S4 processor and a 4.3-inch (540×960 pixels) display, Beats Audio, 8-megapixel auto focus camera with flash 1080p HD video recording and VGA front-facing camera similar to the One X. It has 1GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage and a 1,650 mAh battery. The phone launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but was updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and HTC Sense 4+.

Samsung reports earnings miss as Samsung Galaxy S4 sales disappoint | WMPoweruser

Samsung has joined Apple, Blackberry and HTC in disappointing investors with earnings which were below expectations.

Samsung announced record 9.5 trillion won ($8.3 billion) in operating profit for the April-June quarter but analysts had expected more than 10 trillion won, resulting in a 3% drop in its share price, after a 17% drop from its peak since mid-March.

"It’s weaker than expected. Slow mobile sales, combined with hefty marketing costs for the flagship Galaxy S4 smartphones, undermined the bottom line," Jeff Kim, of Hyundai Securities, told AFP.

Samsung’s mobile business accounted for 74 percent of its total operating profit in the first quarter.

"Is Samsung’s smartphone story now over? Not quite yet. It’s growth is indeed slowing due largely to disappointing sales of the S4," said Jung Sang-jin, a fund manager at Dongbu Asset Management, which owns Samsung shares.

Samsung’s handset shipments are seen rising only 4 percent to 8 percent in the second quarter from the previous quarter, and margins are also being squeezed, as consumers in countries like China opt for stripped-down cheaper devices.

Could part of Samsung’s disappointing growth in part be because Windows Phone handsets, the fastest growing smartphone segment, are taking away some of their margins, or is Samsung’s performance a precursor of what we can expect from Nokia’s earnings report on the 18th July, with a rapidly fading feature phone business and below expectations smartphone growth? Let us know below.

HTC Butterfly S Launched with 4 Ultrapixel Camera

HTC Butterfly S, the next-gen version of their HTC Butterfly device, was unveiled on HTC’s home turf in Taiwan. The phone definitely shows a strong progress report card when compared to the predecessor HTC Butterfly.

Image capture comes at the hands of a 2.1 MPx forward facing camera, while the rear camera is a HTC Ultrapixel from the One. The battery capacity is 3,200 mAh, which should hold the phone strong throughout the day running Android Jelly Bean 4.2 and the HTC Sense 5 UI.

Currently, the phone's price is listed at $765, and will go on sale in Taiwan. We suspect that the phone will make its way around the world eventually like the J Butterfly did, landing in the U.S. with possible a different name and hopefully a tweaked model for some 4G LTE capabilities.

LG reportedly crafting Windows Phone 8 smartphone

Word around town is that LG has its crew working on their very first Windows Phone 8 smartphone almost a year after the mobile platform peeped out. Last we heard LG and Microsoft joining forces was in 2012, when the manufacturer had introduced a WP7-fueled device christened Optimus 7.

Now, we would’ve considered this bit of information as any other speculation, had it not been claimed by a post on BGR.in that is comes from an official source. It is the company’s managing director, Kwon Soon, who had apparently revealed this tidbit to the folks over at Light Reading India. The post quoted him stating, ‘At home (South Korea), we are actually working on a Windows Phone 8 OS powered smartphone.’

However, this in no way means that the conglomerate has plans to shift its attention from the Android market. Kwon went on to comment that the company will continue to emphasize on devices running Google’s OS, but they believe that Microsoft’s system software bears potential too.

With a little over a dozen WP8 smartphones currently present in the market, an additional offering by the South Korean OEM may not be such a bad idea after all. But the device will face stiff competition in the form of Nokia’s Lumia series, Samsung’s portfolio of Ativ handsets and HTC 8S as well as 8X.

At present, the company is said to be enjoying up to 2 percent of the market share in the nation. But as per the aforementioned report, it is clearly not happy with the results and wishes to expand its overall proportion by up to 10 percent within a couple of years. This is probably why it has approximately 30 fresh Android handsets up its sleeve for masses around the Asian country, due to arrive before the end of 2014.

As far as an official launch is concerned Kwon has remarked that LG hasn’t decided upon a date to unveil the Windows Phone 8 device just yet.

Indian OEM Micromax Working On Windows Phone 8 Device | WMPoweruser

Indian OEM Micromax revealed that they are working on Windows Phone 8 devices. Micromax is known for its low priced high spec smartphones in India. Micormax possessed 17.1 percent of the total Indian smartphone market share in Q1 2013, which increased to 24.3 percent in the month of April. CEO of Micromax said that “Going by the current pace and our new device, we are expecting 25 percent market share in the third quarter of FY13,”.

How do they compete against Apple, Samsung and others? One word, Price. Yesterday, they announced their flagship device Canvas 4, with 5-inch 720p IPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass, MediaTek MT6589 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 2,000mAh battery for just $295 and it comes with free aluminum flip cover as well. If they can release a Windows Phone device with similar spec and in same price range, Nokia will finally have a real Windows Phone competitor in India.

Same way they are eating samsung , lg , htc right ? [:D]
mmx is the thorn in the flesh of all biggies, out of nowhere they have become a force to reckon with at least in india.

basically they copy the best of features of all major manufacturers and bring them to the public at the fraction of the cost.

in canvas 4 one of the unique features of this phone is Blow to Unlock, wherein you essentially blow a kiss to your phone to unlock it (yes, that's an actual feature). Other, more sensible features include video pinning to pin videos on the homescreen and look away to pause video, stuff that's straight out of Samsung's TouchWiz. You can also turn the phone down during a call and it automatically switches to loudspeaker mode.

they dont hesitate to spend huge $$ in ads and even copied samsung with the firangs in their ads, and for lower level models they have akshay kumar to cater to the masses [lol]

samsung was forced to get in grand and quattro coz canvas 3 HD was eating their sales like hell. but these 2 phones are among the worst in Samsung's product profile. in short samsung could not stop mmx.

I don't think WP8 MMX will beat Nokia in anyway. I won't ever buy a WP8 that is not Nokia(might change in future  ) if the price is almost equal.
