WhatsApp Becomes Free, Drops Annual Subscription Fee

WhatsApp will be getting rid of its $1 (approximately Rs. 68) annual subscription fee this year. The widely used messaging app confirmed plans to ditch annual fee from all of its apps across various platforms over the next several weeks.

Until now, WhatsApp asked some users to pay an annual fee for using the app after the first year of use - though as many of us have experienced, most users were not asked to pay after a year, and instead were given extensions each year. The company however believes that the approach of annual fee hasn't worked successfully.

"Many WhatsApp users don't have a debit or credit card number and they worried they'd lose access to their friends and family after their first year. So over the next several weeks, we'll remove fees from the different versions of our app and WhatsApp will no longer charge you for our service", says the company in an official blog post.

While confirming plans to axe the annual subscription, the company also hinted that the app is now being used by "nearly a billion people around the world." Unfortunately, WhatsApp has not officially revealed the exact number of users worldwide like it did before. To recall, the popular instant messaging app reached over 900 million monthly active users milestone back in September last year.

Apart from scrapping the annual fee, WhatsApp also revealed its upcoming plans where it wants people to connect with businesses and organisation directly. The messaging service plans to bring tools for the new target audience. WhatsApp believes people can communicate with the bank or any other utility services directly via the messaging app. "We all get these messages elsewhere today - through text messages and phone calls - so we want to test new tools to make this easier to do on WhatsApp," adds the company.

WhatsApp for now has not detailed the tools it will be testing for bringing businesses and organisation closer to its users but we can expect to hear more soon. The company alongside also stressed that removing annual fee will not mean WhatsApp will introduce third-party ads.

WhatsApp Now Supports Up to 256 Users in Group Chat

It appears Facebook-owned WhatsApp has silently pushed a server-side update to its app on Android that increases the number of users included in a group chat. Until now, a WhatsApp group chat could include up to 100 users. However, the update now pushes the limit to 256 users. iOS users have also received an update that brings the same functionality, with version 2.12.13 of the app.

For Android, the expanded group limit is visible on v2.12.367 and above. Those Android users who do not see the update yet can download the latest version (v2.12.437) from the application from the company's website. It is worth mentioning that the new group limit is only visible on Android and iOS for now. However, it should reach Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and other platforms soon.

WhatsApp last month got rid of its $1 (approximately Rs. 68) annual subscription fee. Until now, WhatsApp asked some users to pay an annual fee for using the app after the first year of use - though as many of us experienced, most users were not asked to pay after a year, and instead were given extensions each year.

Apart from scrapping the annual fee, WhatsApp also revealed its upcoming plans where it wants people to connect with businesses and organisation directly.

Earlier this month the messaging company hit 1 billion monthly active user mark, levelling itself with Google's free email service, Gmail. As per the latest stats, WhatsApp witnesses 42 billion messages per day, 1.6 billion photos per day, 250 million videos per day, and has 1 billion groups.

It has been reported that WhatsApp could soon introduce a feature to allow its users to integrate their Facebook account with the instant messaging and voice calling app. The version 2.12.413 of WhatsApp for Android reveals company's intention to allow users to link the messaging service with their respective Facebook account.

Great. Now you can deliver your msg to 255 people at a time [clap].
They also provide a feature like to attach .docx, .pdf file. It will help professional whatsapp groups to transfer this files and share information.

WhatsApp Finally Lets You Send Documents Over Chat

Years after its launch, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp Messenger has finally received the ability to send documents over chats. The feature is visible in the most recent builds available via Google Play and the App Store - Android v2.12.453 and iOS v2.12.4. WhatsApp has also introduced a bunch of other features with the updates.

On Android, the WhatsApp v2.12.453 that's available from Google Play for some users shows a 'Document' section instead of 'Gallery' under attachments (seen above). Not all users with the same app version are able to view the option at the moment. However, those users on the latest app version available from the company site - v2.12.489 - are able to see the option. For now, users can only send pdf files but the file support is likely to expand in the future. It is worth mentioning that a user cannot send a document until the receiver has also updated the app to the same or newer Android app version. However, we tried sending a document from iOS v2.12.14 to Android v2.12.489 over WhatsApp and it worked fine.

You Can Now File Complaints About Misleading Ads via WhatsApp

Consumers can now file complaints against misleading commercials by companies to advertising watchdog ASCI through mobile messaging app WhatsApp.

Consumers can now WhatsApp the objectionable advertisement to +91 77-100-12345, from where the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) would lodge 'suo moto' complaints using this number.

Consumers can send pictures of print ads, hoardings, packaging or screen shots of websites, Links of YouTube videos etc and a ASCI team would be scrutinising these complaints and take it further if found valid, ASCI said a statement.
