Traffic Mess in Bangalore

Once a Maruti 800 was coming out of a road on my left and I stopped to let him join the traffic flow. Before completing the turn he stopped briefly and waved to me smiling and said something... I assume "thank you". He made my day. I was feeling happy for the rest of my drive.

So, now, I make it a point to wave and smile to any one who is courteous on road, be it a Truck, bus, driver, a car or a bike. I also make it a point to roll down the glass and wave if a bus, a truck or a car give me way to overtake.

Many times on narrow Ghat roads, bus and truck drivers pull over and ask me to pass. But we miss those gestures in the city.
Yes it is a good gesture. If this can be followed then there will be hardly any road rage will happen [clap].

I do that on regular basis, and also I give lot of hand signals. But frankly the other drivers look at me a bit crazy, as if where has this monkey landed from. This is because others are not courteous and they are not used to see others who are so.

Best was, once while returning from mysore to bangalore, in the highway, I was giving hand signals and all, when I noticed a foreigner lady taking my snaps / video doing that from the parallel car. She found it amusing. Later when I smiled, and slowed down for them to go ahead and leave me alone, she waived a goodbye and left. And my fellow passengers who always make fun of my habit of hand signalling, found a new story to pull my legs[frustration]

I too do that always.

Always a 'Thank You' or 'go ahead' wont hurt us. Once you start doing that, others also may follow that. Even some of the cabbies appreciate that.

Yesterday I was on the main road and saw a cabbie wanted to cross the main road from a cross. He was waiting for most of the traffic to pass. I waved him to go ahead. But, few two wheelers and few cars came honking with an increased speed and did not let the guy go. He said 'Thanks to me' . I was helpless and I was the only one gave way. Later he told me to go as he could not go anyways.

Last week a couple was going parallel to me and we both(2 wheelers) tried to go between the other vehicles . He knew that I was on the straight line and he had to take left cutting me, he did not give me way. In turn, his pillion's leg got hit by my front tyre when he took left. I was not moving and was not my fault. She was screaming. I said 'Sorry, I am really sorry'. Then she said 'it is okay, not your mistake'.

There were some funny instances happened too. When I say 'Thanks' by raising hand(not finger :P) , some guys get irritated thinking I am scolding them. Once I had to stop to say that 'I said thanks for giving the way'.

These days, I avoid verbal chat most of the time. Instead, i just smile at them and go. Your whole day get disturbed otherwise.

I was driving around 30 KMPH and the traffic light turned amber, I stopped slowly.
What did I do wrong? And if somebody hits from back, it is their fault. The guy from Innova advised me to look back and drive. How can I do that especially when traffic light is turning to amber. If someone who drives rash behind me, to avoid him being hit do I need to break traffic rules?

I really feel sad that most of drivers here doesn't know the rules to be followed. You can also share your experience in Bangalore traffic here.

PS: I have been hit four times including this in my car. Thrice in Bangalore and once in Chennai and all incidents happened near Traffic signal.
Here is my two paise, in this scenario, this is what I would do. While driving at 30kmph, and if I encounter the lights changing to amber, I would not stop abruptly even if I can. All one needs to do in this situation is, step on the brake lightly and slow down to a stop even if you have to cross past the white line, "Stop Line" and look at the RVM before you do all of the above. The one on the airport road is the worst in bangalore. On the underpass at mekri circle. There are people repairing it from 4 days now. Unlimited traffic during the peak hours.
Hebbal flyover opened right up to Canadian International School. Lovely, just been there on Sunday.

Cops were checking for tints in car before SAP office today morning. A good move to target IT people with tints on their car who doesn't care.
Thanks for posting, though I think very few members on our forum are having tints on car. I see lot of non-KA vehicles running with tints though in Bangalore.

Today I did my 30 km morning drive in flat 1 hour[clap].

Acknowledging the good deeds done by fellow riders /drivers is very good for yourself and for the road.
The road rage happens mainly due to the fact that "I am correct and he is not correct" attitude. And we want to teach the other driver a lesson. If we have the skill of having patience and showing goodness the roads will be a better place.Anyway who are we to teach and change others ?[:)]
One more way of saying thanks by the horn I had observed in the rural areas .
This is by just honking twice like bye bye or something.Buses /taxis after they overtake they honk twice (din din ) to say thank you. Anybody observed ?In cities it is not possible as honking will be a nuisance.

I saw the same near after Kanakapura Signal (near ICICI bank and Kalyanamantap) today while coming to office. The person driving the Honda City was lowering the glass and saying something to police. Cop told him to keep on side. Do not know whether they let him go with the 'influence' !

Another practice in big vehicle like Fortuner is putting a green strip above the number place looks like GOVT vehicle. Saw one rash driving with full tinted and taking u-turn when there was no u-turn. Just a green strip above the number plate :)

- In an IT City, all major signals need manual policing. And to make things worse, the intersection would be pot-holed so bad that even the reckless-est's of drivers need to literally slow down and move about.

- Being an IT City, they should have made multiple entries capable of handling high volume of traffic (Infrastructure), but instead, we have broad roads, which reduces gradually while it reaches the major signal. (Example - Graphite India signal from Kundanahalli Gate)

- Mind-blowing road design by BBMP, and the so called scientific way of reducing speed (speed breakers!!!). And what worse, within a km, you would find at least 3 of them. GOD!!! Heights of it [frustration][gun][rules]

- Taxis & Tempo Travelers, who think they are rally drivers and everybody else are "L" board drivers.

- BMTC bus stops, superbly situated right at the intersection of signals or crossings. And to add to it, some drivers drive so slow that one could reach destination faster by walking. And then there are others like the Volvo drivers, who squeeze into every tiny space thinking they are riding a tr-cycle.

- Driving in no-entry / one way, just to avoid a U-turn 400m away, that too with hazard indicators or headlights or both on. Do these drivers even understand how much they are risking others lives, even if they do not care about themselves?

- "I, me, myself - First" attitude.
People, time to grow up. You are just increasing the problem with this attitude. Sober down, have patience, grow up, think clear and be positive. This applies to all categories - 2 wheel, 3 wheel, 4 wheel, 6 wheel, 8 wheel, 12 wheel !!!

I was exactly discussing the same with my friend today. Lanes become narrower once you turn right towards SAP from Graphite India signal. This reduces the flow density of traffic, allowing vehicles to move slowly.

I have a question here for fellow members, who planned all flyovers near KR Puram. Traffic is worst in Tin Factory area. We have Three flyovers here pouring traffic from all places to here.

@rekharam,
It is not just KR Puram, most of the flyover constructions are like that. Even the new constructions happened are also no exception.

Madiwala-Silkboard flyover for that instance. All vehicle coming from Madiwala, btm layout, hsr layout all joins to a two lane road. To reach from BTM to Bommanahalli (3 KM) is easily takes 30 to 45 minutes (if not more) during office hours .

As someone said, the airport road flyover is opened to an extend it seems. Another heavy TOLL soon (for 20 years)!
