ramji i had skipped the toll as the amount wasn't perfectly documented by wifey. as i was driving it was her department.inner line permit was INR 700/ but the lady there swindled INR 1000 so it was 1700/ for us. parking fees were negligible. so also the money for the tickets to various places like the jalianwala bag were all minimal. well the total would reach about 1.3 lakh INR.
Yes, I guessed so. Toll may be 70ps per km approximately.

And other petty expenses added together, it might have reached the figure you have shown. Based on your diesel exp. the average FE is 11 to 12 kms per ltr, seems normal for a SUV. And an average expense per head is Rs 26000/-, too looks very reasonable for 20 days.

Looking forward to see your next travelogue soon SR.

Thank you SR
Those are very good information covering route, altitude and distance.

This will be very helpful for all the travelers going to Leh, the dream land.

Thats an awesome travelogue and really inspiring. Leh trip from Kerala is on my list of "things to do" after getting a Safari. And thanks for the route plan - first step is over [:D]

Oh, one question - how reliable was the Mapmyindia gps during your trip? Were you able to depend on it most times instead of stopping and asking for directions?

map my india was spot on most of the time. i had made a route plan before the journey so i depended on my MMI mostly for the exact location of my vehicle at any point of time.

A small tip from my use of Sygic/MapmyIndia. Please save the route in one or two names. If you have a doubt at any point, please pull the vehicle to side and re-route/reload the maps. I got couple of 'u-turn' alert even I know i was right. I stopped, retyped the location and the 'u-turn' alert went off.

When you plan, you can check the map with google maps too and select the best route. When i went to Tirupati, initially MapMyIndia showed a main road than Chitoor Bypass. After seeing the google map, i changed the route thru Chittoor by pass.

Had been following this TL for a long time. Never had the time to read it actually. So postponed it all this while since I didn't want to have breaks or interruptions while reading.

One word for the entire TL is amazing. After I finished reading, I understood that you have been well prepared for the trip which I think is the most important part. The entire TL has been well written & as most of them said, even I felt like I was travelling with you except for the climate part . The pictures, the details everything was outstanding.

Driving to Leh is almost all enthusiastic motor'ers dream but most of them never make it. Something or the other always holds them back. Good to see that you completed it.

After reading the TL, even I feel like leaving for Leh. And being from kannur, I can take the same route as yours . Also, you have mentioned all the required tools & stuffs to be carried which is a great boon for confused people.
Anyways, I'm sure I wouldn't make a trip with my family since no one is as enthusiastic as me. Whatever it is, I'm just 17 & I believe I have more than enough time to plan a trip to Leh. So until that, I would just wait for my Driving License & build some experience by driving at less danger prone areas. [:)]

jihu thanks buddy for your kind words. jump at any chance for doing long trips as i too missed my chances for doing long trips by road in my twenties when i was a bachelor. sure there were lots of negative then especially vitamin M, parents not permitting. once i drove a car from delhi till payangadi without telling mom and dad.
kinshuk.arya you are always welcome for any info. when taking your parents along the planning has to be spot on. but as i had posted i had seen 70+ people in the circuit braving ill health. i was really amazed by their courage.

Wow. That's great! Even I might end up doing something like that since my parents don't allow my brother to go anywhere far. And yeah, Vitamin M is the biggest problem. I may have to go to my parents for Vitamin M at the last moment! [frustration]

We encountered an elderly couple while we were stuck in the Khardung La traffic jam. Though they were in a car the woman was hit by AMS and was continuously throwing up and was almost unconscious. She needed immediate medical attention but nobody was able to help her due to the traffic congestion. We felt helpless as we could not do to anything for her. It was snowing heavily and the temperature was much below minus. We being on bike, had to leave them on mercy of the traffic jams. It was a very heartrending situation. [cry]

I hope she is fine now [:)]

That's really sad Fyzy.

As SR did, carrying oxygen cylinder will help to some extent and some essential medicines.

i would suggest taking pre medications to prevent AMS. since i was having an oxygen cylinder and being a doctor i took the risk. but i almost regretted it when my wife developed early symptoms of AMS.
fyzy didn't the soldiers at khardungla intervene to help that old lady ? there was a treatment centre at khardungla top run by the army.
