Toyota recalls 1.85 million RAV4 SUVS over fire risks

Toyota Motor (7203.T) said Wednesday it is recalling 1.85 million RAV4 sport utility vehicles in the United States over fire risks stemming from the installation of replacement batteries.

The recall covers 2013-2018 model year vehicles. Toyota said some replacement 12-volt batteries have smaller top dimensions and if a hold-down clamp was not tightened correctly, the battery could move when the vehicle is driven with forceful turns potentially short circuiting, increasing the risk of fires.

Toyota said dealers will replace the battery hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover with improved ones and will notify customers of the recall schedule by late December.

Ford Mustang recalled because low brake lluid warning light may not illuminate

Ford has recalled nearly 202,000 Mustangs because the cars won't provide warnings of low brake fluid levels. This can allow a Mustang to lose brake fluid and therefore braking ability without any warning to a driver.

The recalled 2020-2023 Ford Mustangs may have brake fluid level sensors not properly configured to activate the visual warning indicators when there is a reduction in brake fluid below the recommended level in the master cylinder brake fluid reservoirs. Nearly 14,000 of the Mustangs are recalled in Canada.

The Ford Mustang recall involves two owner notices. One will be mailed December 4, 2023, warning owners of the risk. Second recall letters will be mailed once dealers are ready to make repairs.

FCA recalls 104,000 Jeep Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers

Fiat Chrysler has recalled nearly 104,000 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs because of seat belt problems. The recalled 2022-2024 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer vehicles have third-row seat belts that may not allow occupants to properly access or fasten the seat belts to the buckles.

In October 2022, Chrysler was notified of a potential problem related to third-row seat belt buckles being damaged or scratched in some 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer vehicles.

It was later confirmed the problem could violate federal standards. An occupant may notice a damaged buckle or a buckle that doesn't fasten.

About 6,600 of the Jeeps are recalled in Canada.

Chrysler dealers will replace the third-row seat belt buckles if necessary once recall letters are mailed December 15, 2023.

Nearly 43000 Mercedes-Benz cars recalled over missing Brake Inspection Gauges

Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly 43,000 vehicles that may not be equipped with inspection gauges to check the wear of the rear brake pads. In addition, information for using this inspection gauge might not be included in the owner's manuals of these vehicles.

  • 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz A220
  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA250
  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB250
  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG A35
  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA45
  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA35
  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA250
According to Mercedes, due to the brake force distribution, the brake pads on the front axle will always wear out sooner than the rear axle brake pads. The recalled vehicles are equipped with electronic wear sensors on the front axles.

If the brake pad thickness decreases below a certain level on the front axle, the driver will be warned the brake pads need to be replaced by the permanently lit warning light and warning message which says, “Check brake pads. See Owner’s Manual.”

This warning message will appear at the beginning of each driving cycle until new brake pads are installed. The permanently lit warning light cannot be turned off by the driver and is only deactivated after the brake pads have been replaced.

Dealers will install an inspection gauge and provide supplemental owner's manual information once recall letters are mailed December 31, 2023.

BMW recalls over 177,000 vehicles for Engine Issues

Loose or broken bolts have caused BMW to recall nearly 177,000 older vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. BMW says loose or busted VANOS bolts can cause the engines to stall in these vehicles.

  • 2010-2012 BMW 1 Series Coupe
  • 2010-2012 BMW 1 Series Convertible
  • 2010-2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan
  • 2010-2012 BMW 3 Series Convertible
  • 2010-2011 BMW 3 Series Sportswagon
  • 2010-2011 BMW 3 Series Coupe
  • 2010-2011 BMW 5 Series Sedan
  • 2010-2011 BMW X3 xDrive 28i
  • 2010-2011 BMW X3 xDrive 30i
  • 2010-2011 BMW X5 xDrive30i
  • 2010-2011 BMW Z4 sDrive30i
The four VANOS bolts are aluminum and are used to secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment unit. Some of the vehicles were recalled years ago and other BMW models equipped with in-line 6-cylinder engines were included in an extended warranty program for 10 years and unlimited mileage.

BMW has monitored the field for years and noticed an increasing number of vehicles showed symptoms. BMW opened an engineering investigation in April 2023 but it could not be determined "which vehicles may have experienced a no-start condition, an engine emergency-mode condition, and/or a stalling condition. Further in-depth analyses were necessary."

The automaker looked at customer complaints and warranty claims and in October concluded too many vehicles had suffered from stalling events.

However, BMW has not received any crash or injury reports. Dealers will eventually replace the four VANOS bolts. For now, interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed December 12, 2023.

Second letters will be mailed once the replacement bolts are available.

Honda and Acura models recalled due to possible Engine Seizing

American Honda Motor is recalling 248,999 cars, minivans, SUVs, and pickup trucks due to concerns that a manufacturing error with the connecting rod bearing, which helps the pistons move smoothly, can cause internal engine wear. This could lead to the engine not starting, not running properly, and/or stalling while driving, which increases the risk of a fire, crash, or injury.

The recall includes certain 2015-2020 Acura TLX sedans, 2016-2020 Acura MDX SUVs, 2016 and 2018-2019 Honda Pilot SUVs, 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks, and 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey minivans. Drivers may be forewarned by abnormal engine noise, engine stalling, and/or decreased power with a check engine light illuminated in the instrument panel.

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that 1 percent of the recalled models are estimated to have the problem.

As of November 3, 2023, Honda received 1,450 warranty claims, and no reports of injuries or deaths related to this issue from July 2014 through November 3, 2023.

Owners will be notified of the recall by mail in early January, 2024. They will be directed to bring their vehicle to a local Honda or Acura dealership for inspection and possible repair.

Subaru recalls Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy, Outback over Inhibitor Switch Failure

Subaru welding problems have caused a recall of nearly 109,000 model year 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, 2022 Subaru Forester, 2021-2023 Subaru Legacy and 2021-2023 Subaru Outback vehicles.

Subaru says a faulty weld may allow water to enter the inhibitor switch (neutral safety switch) and cause it to fail. The inhibitor switch is used to prevent a vehicle from starting in gear.

According to Subaru, several problems are caused by failed switches. Subaru says the problem was caused by a worn welding jig that didn't create a thick weld between the stator and cover. This will allow water to enter because the seals won't properly function.

The automaker first learned of a problem in June 2021 and it was determined the supplier rotated the welding jig out of position during normal maintenance. Subaru is aware of 12 technical reports in the U.S. but no reports of crashes or injuries.

Nearly 13,000 of the recalled Subaru vehicles are in Canada. Subaru expects to mail recall letters January 8, 2024, and dealerships will replace the inhibitor switches.

More than 303,000 Honda Accords, HR-V recalled over missing seat belt piece

Nearly 304,000 Honda Accords and HR-Vs are being recalled due to potentially defective seat belts.

According to Honda’s safety report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "front seat belt pretensioners were assembled without a rivet securing the quick connector and wire plate." Pretensioners are devices that tighten seat belts to keep occupants in place when cars brake hard or crash.

"Seat belt pretensioners missing a rivet will not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a collision, increasing the risk of injury," added Honda.

The carmaker noted that as of Nov. 16, there were no reports of injuries or deaths related to the issue, but there have been seven warranty claims.

The recall impacts 2023 and 2024 model-year Honda Accords and HR-Vs that were manufactured between Oct. 4, 2022, to Oct. 14, 2023.

Honda expects less than 1% of the recalled vehicles will require repairs.

Jeep recalls 32,125 Wrangler 4xe models over Potential Fire Risk

Jeep is recalling 32,125 Wrangler 4xe models (2021–2024) due to a fire risk after the company discovered eight vehicle fires. Following an internal investigation that resulted from a routine review of customer data, Stellantis—Jeep's parent company—last week announced it had discovered eight vehicle fires, which has led it to recall 32,125 U.S. models.

As part of its investigation, the company disclosed that six of the eight vehicle fires happened while the plug-in-hybrid Wranglers were connected to chargers. It also said that all of the vehicles were parked and turned off when the fires occurred. Stellantis says it's not aware of any accidents or injuries that resulted from the fires.

This recall only applies to certain Wrangler 4xe models, which feature a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with a roughly 14.0-kWh lithium-ion battery stashed under the rear seats. Stellantis estimates that only 1 percent of the total vehicles built were affected, and the fix involves either a software flash or replacing the entire battery pack.

Stellantis reported that an additional 3856 models in Canada are affected, with another 9249 outside of North America being affected. Owners of recalled vehicles will be advised when to schedule a service.

Ford and Lincoln Cars recalled because doors could open while driving

A Ford door latch recall involves more than 45,000 model year 2015 Ford Fiesta, 2016 Ford Fusion and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles with doors that may open while driving. However, the recall includes only vehicles that were sold or registered in these locations.

Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Ford says a component inside the door latch may break and make it difficult to latch or possibly allow the doors to open while driving. This recall is an expansion of a March 2020 Ford door latch recall.

Ford learned of a 2016 Fusion with door latch problems in August and a review of complaints showed all the vehicles were built between April 28, 2015, and May 23, 2015. This indicated the March 2020 Ford door latch recall may not have been accurate. Apparently there were more faulty latches in stock when the supplier and Ford believed there were none.

As of October 18, 2023, Ford is aware of 14 door latch warranty claims and 39 complaints between October 8, 2015, and August 21, 2023. However, Ford is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries related to the door latches.

An occupant may notice problems when latching the doors or experiencing a door that rebounds when trying to shut it closed. A driver should notice a door ajar warning light, a chime, wind noise or an illuminated dome light.

Ford dealers will inspect the door latch date codes and possibly replace all four side door latches. Ford door latch recall letters are expected to be mailed December 4, 2023.

142,000-plus Ram Trucks recalled for Turn Signals and High Beams

ram-1500-2023-exterior-angle-oem-scaled.jpg

Affected vehicles include model-year 2023 1500 pickups and model-year 2023-24 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks. The issue concerns the steering column control module, which may cause the high beams to activate when the turn signal is used or activate the turn signal when the high beams are used. Additionally, the turn signal self-canceling feature may not function properly. Either issue can cause confusion or reduce visibility for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering column control module for free. Owners will be notified by Ram parent automaker Stellantis Jan. 17, 2024, but for more information in the meantime, they can call the automaker at 1-800-853-1403 (Stellantis’ number for this recall is B2A), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.

Ford F-150 Lightning recall issued over Stability Control

A Ford F-150 Lightning recall includes about 6,500 electric trucks due to problems with the electronic stability control (ESC) systems. The recalled 2022-2023 F-150 Lightnings are equipped with SYNC software that may fail to activate the electronic stability control systems at the beginning of ignition cycles.

This means the trucks violate federal safety standards. The problem occurred when a previous over-the-air software update introduced incorrect software logic (SYNC 1.9.4 update).
A Ford Lightning driver may not notice the truck operates differently after receiving over-the-air update 6.3.0 as the truck remains in off-road mode with a reduced ESC operation after cycling the ignition.

There will be a warning on the dash that indicates "ESC OFF" which indicates electronic stability control is off. Ford is not aware of any crash or injury reports. About 1,400 of the Ford electric trucks are recalled in Canada.

The accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated by a Ford dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update. Ford expects to mail F-150 Lightening recall letters December 18, 2023.

Tesla Autopilot safety recall affects two million cars

Tesla in the US has agreed to ‘recall’ two million cars with Autopilot autonomous driving features, following a long-running investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall takes the form of an over-the-air software update, which it is being reported has been designed to improve the car’s ability to determine whether drivers using Tesla’s Autopilot functions are paying proper attention to the road ahead, and are keeping their hands on the steering wheel at all times. The company, headed by Elon Musk, says it disputes the NHTSA’s analysis that the existing system is open to misuse, and says it has agreed to upgrade the software only in order to put an end to the investigation.

Tesla has told US media outlets that the new software will add additional alerts and controls to those already in place “to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer (one of the Autopilot’s suite of functions) is engaged.”

The NHTSA began its investigation into Autopilot after recording a significant number of crashes (over a dozen) in which Teslas had collided with stationary vehicles on the road - including fire trucks and police cars - in some cases with fatal results. The NHTSA says it found that "Tesla's unique design of its Autopilot system can provide inadequate driver engagement and usage controls that can lead to foreseeable misuse of the system."

That translates as an increased risk of accidents and crashes, where Autopilot driving aids have been switched on, but the driver does not maintain sufficient vigilance in order to maintain responsibility for the vehicle’s operation, or is unprepared to swiftly intervene if there’s a system failure or Autopilot disengages for any reason.

Tesla in Europe has not yet responded to our enquiries about whether the software updates will be applicable to cars sold in the UK or elsewhere. We’ve approached the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency - the UK body responsible for vehicle recalls - for comment, too.

Mazda recalls B-Series Truck over incorrectly installed replacement Air Bag Inflators

Mazda is recalling about 15,500 B-Series trucks that received replacement front passenger airbag inflators under a previous recall. Mazda says 2004-2006 B-Series airbag inflators may have been installed in the wrong direction.

Mazda's 2004-2006 B-series trucks are manufactured by Ford and share the same platform as Ford's 2004-2006 Ranger trucks. In February, Mazda received word from Ford about a mispositioned passenger frontal airbag inflator. Ford discovered technicians did not follow the recall repair instructions completely.

Mazda modified the warranty claim process for a 2017 recall and a 2018 recall which now requires photos after repairs are completed. Mazda also created special service program “SSPC9” to inspect about 250 trucks and eventually decided to recall all the affected trucks.

Mazda will mail recall letters January 12, 2024, and dealers will reinstall the inflators if necessary.

  • 2020-2022 Toyota Camry, Camry Hybrid
  • 2020-2021 Toyota Corolla
  • 2020-2021 Toyota Highlander, Highlander Hybrid
  • 2020-2021 Toyota RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid
  • 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid
Lexus OCS Sensor Recall
  • 2021 Lexus ES 250
  • 2020-2022 Lexus ES 300H
  • 2020-2021 Lexus ES 350
  • 2020-2021 Lexus RX 350
  • 2020-2021 Lexus RX 450h
The OCS sensor problem can block the passenger airbag system from properly classifying the passenger's weight, causing the airbag to not deploy in certain crashes. Toyota didn't release many details about the occupant classification system sensor recall, but vehicle owners should receive recall letters by the middle of February 2024.

Toyota and Lexus dealerships will inspect the OCS sensors and replace them if necessary.
