Mazda backup Camera recall involves 340,000 Vehicles

Mazda backup camera problems have caused a recall of more than 340,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The recalled 2014-2018 Mazda3 and 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3 rearview camera images may not display properly by showing flickering or distorted images.

The backup camera problem caused a complaint in May 2015 from the U.S., and from June 2015 to June 2017 more camera image problems were reported. Mazda opened an investigation as it received another eight backup camera failure complaints. Engineers determined the rearview camera problem was caused by wear on the backup camera wiring harness connector pin.

Mazda says there was a design problem with the rearview camera wiring harness fastener that could damage the harness due to vibrations during normal driving and while opening and closing the liftgate.

Mazda issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to inform dealerships about diagnosing and repairing the backup camera problem. However, Transport Canada contacted Mazda regarding the handling of the backup camera issue as a technical service bulletin.

Transport Canada recommended Mazda issue a backup camera recall and Mazda decided to fix the 2014-2018 Mazda3 5-door hatchbacks and 2016-2021 CX-3 vehicles in Canada and the U.S.

According to Mazda, the backup camera problems caused nine complaints, one property damage report, but no death or injury claims.Mazda backup camera recall letters will be mailed September 12, 2023, and dealers will inspect and possibly replace the rearview cameras. Mazda dealerships will also install wiring harness fastening seals.

Mazda says the new parts were built using fastening seals which protect the wiring harnesses from damage.

Nissan Leaf vehicles recalled due to unintentional acceleration

Nissan LEAF unintended acceleration has caused a recall of 2018-2023 LEAF cars which need their vehicle control modules reprogrammed. More than 66,000 LEAF cars are involved in the acceleration recall.

In December 2021, internal testing on a trial Nissan vehicle found a motor torque deceleration delay following deactivation of intelligent cruise control. Nissan investigated but was unable to recreate the problem, but testing continued.

Engineers finally determined a specific sequence of actions could cause unintended acceleration in LEAF cars. Here's how Nissan describes it.

The following sequence of actions are required to be completed in under eight seconds for unintended acceleration to occur:

1. Cruise Control, Intelligent Cruise Control or ProPILOT Assist is disengaged; and
2. Immediately:
a. Shift drive modes from ‘D’ to ‘B’ or ‘ECO’ or e-Pedal ‘ON’; and
b. Press accelerator pedal and then release

The problem has not occurred in the real-world and would be rare if it did.

Nissan LEAF recall letters will be mailed August 30, 2023. Nissan dealers will reprogram the vehicle control modules, but LEAF owners with questions may call 800-867-7669.

Tesla recalls 16,000 Model S and Model X vehicles over Seat Belt issue

Tesla has announced a recall affecting nearly 16,000 Model S and Model X units due to a seat belt issue. The recall applies to specific 2021-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles where the front-row seat belts may not be adequately connected to the pre-tensioner anchors, potentially leading to detachment.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report states that if the first-row seat belt is not connected to its pre-tensioner anchor as per specifications, it may disconnect from the anchor during regular operation when the belt is pulled up to latch it to the buckle.

Documents reveal that this issue impacts both front seats in the affected vehicles. Tesla has assured that it will conduct inspections and connect the first-row seat belts to the pre-tensioner anchors as required to resolve the problem. In cases where the seat belt cannot be connected to the pretension, the entire assembly will be replaced at no cost to the customer. As of June 19, Tesla has identified 12 warranty claims related to this problem, although there have been no field reports of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities resulting from the seat belt issue.

Tesla recalls model Y, S, and X for misaligned Front cameras

Tesla is recalling certain Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles because the pitch angle of the front-facing cameras may not be aligned to specification, which may cause active safety features to be unavailable without alerting the driver about their unavailability, according to the recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane keeping assist could all be malfunctioning because of the incorrect pitch angle of the front-facing cameras, but the driver wouldn’t know these features are unavailable because the car will not issue any warning, the NHTSA says. As such, this may cause the driver to rely on unavailable features, which could increase the risk of a collision.

In total, 1,337 vehicles are potentially involved in the recall, as per the official report, with 80 percent of the units estimated to have the defect. Tesla Model S cars made between January 24 and July 10, Model X units manufactured between January 17 and July 2023, as well as Model Y vehicles produced between April 27 and July 13 are part of the recall.

To remedy the issue, Tesla Service will inspect the pitch angle of the forward-facing cameras on affected vehicles and, where needed, will adjust the angle to specification, free of charge.

Ford recalls 870,000 F-150 trucks because of potential parking brake malfunction

Ford Motor has recalled about 870,000 F-150 pickup trucks because of a faulty parking brake that could turn on by itself, causing the driver to lose control.

The recall includes 2021 to 2023 models of the F-150, according to recall documents posted Friday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Damages in the wiring of some F-150s could activate the truck's parking brake while someone is driving, causing them to lose control of the vehicle and crash.

Drivers of trucks with the brake issue may see a warning light on their vehicle's panel, NHTSA documents show.

The Michigan automaker said it would fix the issue by installing a protective tie strap and tape wrap on the brake wiring as well as replacing the rear axle wiring harness if necessary at Ford and Lincoln dealerships. The repairs will be made free of charge, Ford said. Drivers who have already paid a mechanic to fix the problem can be reimbursed by submitting paperwork to Ford by September 11, 2024.

Ford said it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

Hyundai fire risk warning as 91,000 vehicles recalled

South Korea's Hyundai Motor and Kia are recalling almost 92,000 vehicles in the US because of a fire risk. The recall affects several models and stems from an issue with an electrical component in a transmission oil pump, which could overheat.

The companies advised owners of the vehicles to park outside and away from buildings until they are inspected.

This is the latest in a series of fire-related recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in recent years. In relation to the latest recall, Kia said there had been six reports of "thermal incidents" but no crashes or injuries. Hyundai said it had four similar reports and also recorded no crashes, injuries or deaths due to the issue.

As well as the fire risk, heat damage could trigger a short circuit affecting other vehicle controllers, Hyundai said.

"Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete," the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said. "The electronic controller for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump to overheat," it added. Vehicle owners will be contacted in late September and dealers will inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller if needed.

The carmakers told the NHTSA that the suspect component was taken out of production in March.

Mazda CX-90 SUVs recalled for Pedestrian Alert Systems

A 2024 Mazda CX-90 recall is necessary because of possible problems with the pedestrian alert systems.

About 17,600 Mazda CX-90 SUVs are recalled in the U.S. because the pedestrian alert system warning sounds driving in REVERSE may be activated in any gear other than REVERSE.

The system alerts pedestrians in the vicinity of the Mazda CX-90 by activating an alert sound while the SUV is driven at a low speed. There is something called the Mazda CX-90 “AVAS [Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System] ISB” amplifier which controls the warning sound for driving in REVERSE.

But missing software can cause problems, especially when the gear selector lever is moved quickly through various gears.Mazda says CX-9 drivers won't have any warning before the problem occurs.

To date, Mazda isn't aware of any crashes or injuries relating to the alert system sound issues.

Kia recalls 121,000-Plus Niros, Niro PHEVs for Engine compartment Fire Risk

A Kia Niro hydraulic clutch actuator recall has been announced for more than 121,000 SUVs due to a risk of fires in 2017-2022 Kia Niro and 2018-2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Fluid may leak into the printed circuit board inside the hydraulic clutch actuator and cause an engine compartment fire.

In January, Kia learned of a 2020 Kia Niro Hybrid owner who complained about an illuminated hybrid warning light. A dealership found thermal damage to the hydraulic clutch actuator connector and harness. Another report came in, this time from a 2019 Niro Hybrid with an illuminated warning light and localized melting around the hydraulic clutch actuator connector.

As Kia expanded its investigation of the problem, another incident occurred to a 2018 Niro Hybrid which involved localized melting.

Kia and the supplier found corrosion on the printed circuit boards in the three Niro Hybrids, convincing both companies to hire a third-party engineering firm.

In July, Kia confirmed, "evidence of fluid contamination on PCB [printed circuit board] potentially from external sources but no evidence of internal leaks or brake fluid on the printed circuit board, 2) contaminated PCB can cause an electrical short circuit, and 3) PCB short circuit can lead to a fire as confirmed by duplication testing."

Kia expects to mail Niro hydraulic clutch actuator recall letters September 29, 2023. Kia dealerships will replace the hydraulic clutch actuators as necessary, and install new fuses.

Toyota recalls certain 2022 and 2023 Toyota Tundra, Tundra hybrid models

Toyota is conducting a safety recall in the U.S. involving certain 2022 and 2023 model year Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles. Approximately 168,000 vehicles in the U.S. are involved in this recall.

The subject vehicles are equipped with a plastic fuel tube which could move and rub against a brake line and develop a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could increase the risk of fire.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will replace the fuel tube with an improved part and additional clamps at no cost to customers. Toyota is currently preparing the remedy parts for this recall. As a temporary measure until the final remedy parts are available, the dealers will install protective materials and a clamp on the fuel tube at no cost to customers. Toyota will notify affected owners about this issue by early October 2023.

Information about automotive recalls, including but not limited to the list of involved vehicles, is current as of today’s filing date and is subject to change thereafter. To see if your vehicle is involved in a safety recall visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information.

Subaru recalls 35,000-plus Crosstreks, Imprezas for Short-circuit risk

Japanese automaker Subaru is recalling 35,300 examples of its Crosstrek SUV and Impreza hatchback over an issue that could cause a short circuit in the vehicles. Until now, it’s been a very quiet year for the automaker, with its last major recall being back in December 2022.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2024 Crosstreks and Imprezas. The issue is with the instrument panel harness, which may not have sufficient clearance around it, allowing it to potentially contact the steering beam bracket. If the harness and steering beam bracket come into contact with each other, the harness’s wire insulation could become damaged and cause a short-circuit. If a short circuit occurs while the vehicle is being driven, the vehicle could lose power, increasing the risk of a crash.

To fix the issue, dealers will inspect the harness and install an additional clamp on the steering beam bracket. For vehicles with damage, dealers will apply protective tape or replace the harness, as necessary. Both remedies will be provided for free. Owners will be notified Oct. 3, 2023.

Nikola recalls all 209 Electric Trucks following June fire

Nikola said on Friday it was recalling all the battery-powered electric trucks that it has delivered till date and is suspending sales after an investigation into recent fires found a coolant leak inside a battery pack as the cause.

There are a total of 209 battery-powered electric trucks in the marketplace between dealers and customers and the company is recalling those vehicles and is in the process of contacting all parties, a spokesperson for Nikola told Reuters.

The preliminary findings of the probe by a third-party investigator were corroborated on Thursday by a "minor thermal incident" on one pack on a parked engineering-validation truck, the company said, adding that no one was injured. "Foul play or oth...

"Foul play or other external factors were unlikely to have caused the incident," Nikola said in a statement, adding efforts were underway to provide a remedy.

The company had said it suspected foul play when it started an investigation in June after trucks at its Phoenix, Arizona, headquarters caught fire. One damaged truck, kept at the Phoenix site for monitoring, re-ignited last month.

Internal investigations from Nikola's safety and engineering teams indicate a single supplier component within the battery pack as the likely source of the coolant leak that caused the vehicles to catch fire, the company said.

Struggling with supply chain bottlenecks and weaker demand, Nikola decided to make battery electric trucks only to order and focus on hydrogen fuel cell trucks.

Nikola on Aug. 4 appointed Chairman Stephen Girsky, a former General Motors executive, as its chief executive, its fourth in four years.

The company flagged "substantial doubts" about its ability to continue as a going concern for the next 12 months, reiterating its warning for the third time since February, as it awaits "critical" additional capital.

On Friday, Nikola asked customers and dealers of its Tre battery electric trucks to take certain immediate safety measures, including considering parking them outside.

Over 236,000 Nissan Sentra sedans recalled due to steering issue

A Nissan Sentra tie-rod recall has been announced for 2020-2022 Sentra tie rods that may bend or break. More than 236,000 Sentras are recalled to prevent the tie rods from bending if the vehicles strike curbs or suffer other impacts.

This Nissan Sentra tie-rod recall replaces and expands a Sentra recall issued in June 2021.

Nissan says a Sentra owner should call their dealership for help with transportation if the steering wheel vibrates or if it feels off-center.

Nissan must design new tie rods as replacements, so as an interim repair dealers will inspect and replace any damaged tie rods. Dealers will replace both left and right tie rods once the parts are available.
Nissan estimates replacement tie rods won't be available until Winter 2023-2024. The repair should take less than three hours.

Hyundai recalling 38,000 vehicles that can unexpectedly accelerate

Hyundai has recalled 38,000 Elantra Hybrid vehicles that may suddenly accelerate once the brake pedals are released. The 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrids may have software errors in the motor control units. Unintended acceleration after releasing the brake pedal will come as a shock to a Elantra Hybrid driver.

In August 2022, Hyundai received a complaint about unintended acceleration of a 2022 Elantra Hybrid, causing the automaker to open an investigation. By February 2023, Hyundai was aware of eight complaints alleging Elantra Hybrid unintended acceleration in the U.S. In May 2023, engineers still had not replicated the alleged problem through various test drives covering 2,000 miles.

In July, engineers determined the problem is the result of a “fail-safe condition that is activated upon detection of a transmission/drive motor synchronization fault by the Hybrid Power Control Unit’s (HPCU) motor control unit."

However, Hyundai says the brakes and brake override systems remain fully functioning.

Hyundai Elantra Hybrid recall letters will likely be mailed October 17, 2023, and dealerships will update the motor control unit software.
