reports that the 4th gen Honda City will also be launched as a hybrid-only car in Japanese domestic market in 2014Q2. This is good news in two ways :
1. For a car to be launched in Japan, it has to meet very strict safety standards, so we in India can be hopeful of a 5-star safety rating for City. The lack of safety testing for Amaze is what deterred me from considering it for purchase.
2. India can be hopeful of a hybrid-ready model, should the government realize one fine day that it is long term interest to allow tax breaks for hybrid cars - probably when nuclear power has solved India's vast energy demand.
Another thing I want to mention w.r.t to current (3rd gen) City's soft suspension resulting in complaints of poor handling and some body roll by enthusiasts. This problem should go away as the 4th gen City has been designed on the same platform as 2014 Jazz/Fit, which in turn was designed to give a ride and handling keeping the VW Polo as a benchmark. In words of Honda’s Senior Ride and Handling Engineer, Terumasa Kotada -
In upping our game, we wanted to make a stronger international competitor, so we benchmarked our Fit on the Polo. The moment you get in the Polo, you notice how low you sit in the car. This instills confidence. And then when you drive the Polo, you notice how low its roll center is and its huge stability levels, instilling even more confidence. To get our desired result, I tested the car extensively on the autobahns in Germany.
The question is - will Honda City be able to improve the handling, give a plush ride, and at the same time keep the GC high enough ? I'm hopeful the Honda engineers will delight us.
Only thing to note is none of the new vehicles have ACC. I don't know what's the reasoning here not proving the ACC. Probably something to do with fuel economy?
The Japanese version of 2014 Fit/Jazz does have ACC. See the
specs. Also see this pic from IAB:
Whether Honda considers it a worthwhile feature for Indian buyers and climate is another matter.
