In this poll, swift dzire is the lowest. Factually its the highest selling Compact Sedan. When I bought my xcent, many of future potential buyers were like "wow what features". But they were not considering a Hyundai/Tata/Honda/Ford when it comes to their purchase. They are all waiting for the dzire facelift to buy. For them, Maruti is trustable, low maintenance. In my parking lot or extended family, all I see is Swift/Dzire. I too wanted to go for dzire but Xcent had all I wanted and I did own an Accent before so my choice was Hyundai.

You are right mate. When i bought the Manza my friends were going gaga over the space, features provided by the Manza compared to Dezire. But when time came they chose Dezire over Manza.

Though we have to wait until Zest is released for the market,it will surely need something extra ordinary to change people's mindset about tata and take away from Maruti/Hyundai/Honda
spot on mate. Pulling customers from Maruti to Tata will be a huge task for TML.

Last month(June 2014) Honda sold more Amaze then Xcent. With Zest, it'll only add to the confusion among buyers. It will bring Dzire numbers down. I think people will choose cars in this segment based on thier needs. Xcent will be for feature lovers, Dzire for Refinement & ASS, Zest for Diesel AMT, Amaze for engines.
Only 10% of buyers go with such breakup analysis, 90 % go for brand popularity and design and if that's the case then tata zest has a fair chance to be the 2nd spot after dezire if again the ass helps tata.

TopGear Magazine india Review about TATA ZEST:

recently TopGear Test driven TATA ZEST they really impression with Revotron performance [clap]

The last time we were so impressed with a Tata product, it was back in 2011. It was a crossover, called the Aria, and unlike any other Tata on sale, it had impressive cabin quality, fit and finish was remarkable and best-in-class ride quality. And it’s after three years that we have driven a Tata that has come very close to being that impressive.

And why not. Tata has taken them 40 months of hardship to churn out a brand new product. And after having a go in the Zest, it seems their efforts have finally paid off. The engineers have done a stellar job, not just with the aesthetics, but on technology and mechanical grounds too.

Although based on the Vista platform, Tata has completely modified the underpinnings to make sure it doesn’t even share a single bolt with the old car. And the efforts gone into getting things right from the start are evident. The exterior design is refreshing, looks compact and dynamic, plus that stubby boot section doesn’t seem like an afterthought. It may look a bit odd from certain angles, though.

It’s not just the exteriors that manage to get our thumbs up. The cabin too is bloody impressive. It’s a refreshing design, and with no component being shared with any of the older Tatas, the Zest’s cabin looks striking, in fact the best looking Tata cabin currently. There’s a significant improvement in quality of materials, the dashboard layout is attractive, segment-first touch-screen infotainment and voice command are quite thoughtful, and the cabin is spacious enough for average Indian family. However, the boot section at 390 litres, isn’t the biggest amongst its rivals and the suspension eats up into the boot space.

At the heart of this Tata are two engine options. The tried and tested 1.3-litre Quadrajet motor and a segment-first 1.2-litre Revotron turbo-charged petrol engine. Teamed with a 5 speed manual at the launch, all the 89bhp and 140Nm of torque will be sent to the front wheels. Another segment-first are the multi-drive modes that lets you choose from three settings - Eco, City and Sport – which can be accessed via click of a couple of buttons.

These modes do make a difference and come in quite handy in our driving conditions. And while we are still at it, the Zest will surprise you with its overall driving dynamics. Acceleration in Sport mode is sharp with turbo kicking in at around 1800rpm and pulling cleanly till 6000rpm. The gearbox too is butter smooth with short and precise throws teamed with well spaced out ratios to aid city and highway driving.

Those hoping for an AMT, need not worry. The diesel motor is also offered with an automated manual transmission called the F-tronic. Offered with a variable geometry turbo, the diesel unit churns out 89bhp and 200Nm of torque. The gearbox has been optimised for the diesel motor with timely gearshifts and it does obey to your right foot inputs pretty well, but shift can be a bit jerky at time. Plus, there’s a Sport mode that revs to a higher rpm before upshifting gears. The mid-spec XMA variant comes with hill-start assist and a ‘crawl’ function that can help you move at a snail's pace in traffic conditions.

What further accentuates the overall experience is the suspension setup. The Zest eats potholes for breakfast, irons out road undulations without making any fuss and offers a good backseat ride. But since it is tuned to be on the softer side, there is a bit of body roll around corners. Then there is the new electric power steering that offers positive feedback and works well when pushed hard with good levels of grip from the tyres too.

A close look at its feature list reveals this is one Tata that’s come well prepared to take on its Asian rivals. The carmaker has bravely managed to stuff the Zest up to the brim, with many of them being segment-firsts. It’s a great package, a car capable enough to pull customers back to Tata showrooms. It’s attractive both inside and out, quality, although not consistent, is up by a notch and the new 1.2 turbo-petrol unit is now a match to the competition. Not to forget its excellent ride, handling and spacious cabin.

Finally, with the Zest, Tata has announced its grand return to the volume segment. All that remains to be seen is how well Tata positions the Zest. Going by the track records, Tata is known to price its products aggressively, and we hope it continues to do so. A range starting from Rs 5 lakh, stretching up to Rs 7.5 lakh sounds promising for a compact sedan with bucket list comfort features. And if that happens, there’s no stopping this home-grown auto giant to crawl its way up the sales chart.

The numbers
Tata Zest XT
1193cc, turbo-petrol, FWD, 89bhp, 140Nm, 5-speed Manual, Ground clearance: 175mm, Boot space: 390 litres, Fuel tank: 44 litres, Kerb weight: 1135kg, Tyres: 185/60 R15

Tata Zest Diesel XMA
1248cc, turbo-diesel, FWD, 89bhp, 200Nm, Automated Manual Transmission, Ground clearance: 165mm, Fuel Tank: 44 litres, Boot space: 390 litres, Kerb weight: 1170kg, Tyres: 185/60 R15

The verdict
Finally, an impressive product from Tata with best-in-class features, space and comfort. The Revotron engine is a gem. Also, a much-need mass market diesel automatic now in town. Engine and gearbox combination offers good driveability. Stellar ride and handling

Surprise! Tata Zest compact sedan to get a detuned, base diesel variant?

The entry-level Tata Zest will get a lesser powerful diesel version of the 1.3 Multijet engine as a cost saving measure

Tata Motors will launch its compact sedan in a number of versions and trims. Besides, petrol and diesel engines, manual and AMT transmissions, Tata will also introduce a lesser powered version in the Zest diesel. The entry-level model which is supposed to come without any bells and whistles like alloy wheels, the Harman audio system, airbags or ABS, will also only come with the 75PS version of the 1.3-litre diesel engine. This engine is the same Multijet engine that will power the 90PS Zest, but it will use a fixed geometry turbocharger instead of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger or VGT used in the more expensive versions of the Tata Zest.

The rationale behind this move is easy to see. Even though Tata Motors wants to push the Zest as a spirited and involving car to drive (therefore, the name), it also wants to bring home traditional buyers who are looking for a value proposition. These might not be your young at heart, urban customers, but those in smaller towns looking for a sedan (for its higher status value) that’s spacious and comfortable but also only costs as much as hatchbacks. Given the lower pricing the 75PS 1.3-litre diesel engine commands, it allows Tata Motors to cater to this crowd without affecting its margins too much.

This engine will also find its way under the bonnet of Zest’s hatchback twin, the Bolt. The Bolt has undergone similar changes over the Vista like the Zest and will sport identical interiors and equipment as the compact sedan. It is expected to have revised dynamics as well and better NVH characteristics over the Vista. The Bolt is expected to hit showrooms early next year.

Well not sure about personal segment Zest (lower models) may be well go with private cab operators if priced below Dzire. Xcent and Amaze have no footprint with them still.
Yes you are right. I am not sure how Hyundai is managing from the fleet operators from keeping them at bay.

Now, the pricing of zest so that it is a fair deal for the most thoughtful car buyers and the fleet operators must feel that they should not buy one is a very delicate pricing issue. Lets wait and see how TML manages that!!!

BTW, there is an autocar first review of Tata Zest. They say "the car is impressive on many counts". Impressed and delighted.

ACI magazine and show review are contradicting at some points. When magazine says Revotron is fine, show says it is under powered.
Overdrive review is somewhat a bit against the product eventhough it accepts in the verdict. But still they said they will now start considering the car against the rivals.

in ACI they said its not under powered motor they just said that the revotron motors is not quiker has its rivals its takes some time when we rev hard to pickup speed due to turbo unit campare to its rivals because the have free reving but over all the engines feels very refined and smooth

I think the Xcent is somewhat the weak one in terms of power, esp the diesel version. But there is really very little to choose across the lot for the price segment. Expect the Zest to be the most robust in terms of build quality, ride and handling , DZire to be the most niggle free and Amaze to have a slightly higher brand appeal although it may have the least number of features. But the Zest, if (and a BIG if) it maintains consistency in product quality at a decent price, is definitely spicing up the market quite a bit.

Hyundai does not have to make any effort. The atrocious spare prices and service costs itself take care of that.

Tata will try to price it sensibly. Their target will be both fleet operators as well as private buyers including rural/sub urban buyers. That is why they are launching 75 BHP version also.

Again and again and again "Pricing" come into play here.
They have got the features and dynamics almost right. I they have the attitude that "you want features, you pay the price" then its really going to hurt the positive sentiment. In the beginning they must keep the price below competition atleast for introductory period.

Tata Zest Quadrajet AMT Vs Honda Amaze I-DTEC Vs Hyundai Xcent CRDi Vs Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire DDiS - Comparison By Overdrive

Verdict

We have repeatedly mentioned this in all our compact sedan comparisons, a car from this segment must feel like a step up from a large hatchback. The Maruti Swift Dzire for reasons unknown is still the best selling car in its segment, it is a great car to drive and performs well too, but doesn’t offer anything more than the Swift, what about boot space? Yes, only a few more litres and that’s it. The Zest in comparison is a better car overall, there is more space inside, is more stylish both inside and out and the features are thoughtful. And if you are out looking for an automatic diesel compact sedan, the Zest is the car for you, the car is even expected to be priced on par with the cars you see here and in our opinion is a good alternative to a regular manual transmission car. But despite Tata ensuring improvement in quality, styling and pretty much everything that goes into making a car, the Zest still doesn’t score more points than the Amaze and Xcent. This leaves us with these two cars, the clash between the two has been a close one but then one does emerge as winner, the Hyundai offers more comfort features and better NVH than the Honda, but then these two features aren’t good enough for a clean victory. The Amaze is the most spacious car overall, offers the best performance and efficiency, is better to look at and most importantly offers standard safety features. Despite increased competition, this time from the Tata Zest, the Amaze is still the best diesel compact sedan available today.

Really surprised to hear this from a Magazine like Overdrive. Seems folks in overdrive are unaware of indian car buyer’s mentality. Swift is the most popular car in its segment. No doubt about this. Also for 90% Indians owning a car is a status symbol. Same way a sedan is more desirable than a hatchback. Now if they are getting a sedan based on swift, whoaa that’s the best compact sedan under 4 m.
