re: Mega Comparo – Tata Zest vs Maruti Swift Dzire vs Honda Amaze vs Hyundai Xcent vs For

yes right now TATA changed alot but these car advicers are not changed their mind set about TATA Image
Tata is the only brand which is improving upside with every next product its releasing. And with the release of Zest and Bolt they have almost reached the global quality standards.

Even with HorizoNext, Tata Motors after sales service has become strong with every TASC and COncorde taking a strict after service feedback. They aim at getting a minimum of above good rating for every point in the list. And if any customer rates good or average, the TASC manager immediately has a personal interaction and assures you the best quality right on the spot. A great move which improves their brand image and customer experience [clap].

I think these reviewers and car blog guys have not visited any TASCs recently. They are still stuck up with the times of Indica [frustration]!!! Now Tata has improved to the competetion head on, time for car reviewers to improve their mindset towards TATA.

This entire mindset will surely change with the HorizoNext strategy. If Tata Motors continuously launches quality products like Zest and Bolt and few more in the next year, Tata makes an image as a premium brand. But I donot have any issues with their products especially ride quality rocks. I can handle the TASC guys as I can squeeze best out of them [evil].

The big minus of the Xcent is it's puny 1.1l diesel which simply struggles on highways.
Yes, you are absolutely right. But people who are purchasing Hyundai cars seems like they are not even thinking of testing those cars' ride quality and pickup on highways [frustration]. If they do, they will stop purchasing them.

re: Mega Comparo – Tata Zest vs Maruti Swift Dzire vs Honda Amaze vs Hyundai Xcent vs For

I guess Tatas SHOULDrevive the Rover brand. Although, the Rover is a cheap brand in UK and is dead out there, in India, the Rover would be instantly linked to JLR brand which has already established itself over here.

Tatas can therefore leverage this brand to launch entry level luxury vehicles and tap the 20-30 lakhs segment.

so Under 20L you have Tata
between 20-35 L you will have Rover (JLR + Tata cross vehicles would sit here)
and 35L + will be JLR.

By doing this no brand would eat into others share and yet people will have lots of options.

PS:
1. MODs this seems to be OT discussion. and request you to please put it in appropriate thread
2. Any Tata decision maker is reading this thread do give a thought around launching of Rover brand. Its a sincere request.

@vicky,

TATA as a parent brand should be in touch with the JLRs when it comes to brand positioning. It'll take time though. But I think TATA should look at Nano as a brand. With 3-5 low cost cars. Above which TATA should place itself. And then JLRs.

Both ideas seem to be quite good, but it would be better if Vicky sir's idea comes to reality as the Rover name has an upmarket ring to it.

Tata Motors to launch Bolt and Zest by July.

Finally its like I am sitting in an european restaurant with live music band playing just for me and my wife [;)]!!! As ever expected and known to all the entire world, the Tatas pricing is a definite killer.

With so many features and the killer pricing Zest and Bolt are definitely going to give a run for their money for the other models in their respective segments [clap].

Hyundai Xcent vs Maruti Swift Dzire vs Honda Amaze comparison

Hyundai's first compact sedan, the Xcent, goes up against established segment rivals the Dzire and the Amaze. Could it be a new favourite?

0_0_450_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-20140503030048_comparomain.jpg
The new Hyundai Xcent takes on the Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze.

The compact sedan market in India is booming. The Maruti Dzire sold 1,97,685 units in the last 12 months – that’s more than most carmakers did with their whole model range combined – and for a brief moment, it was even the best-selling car in the country. The Amaze, meanwhile, is single-handedly responsible for kick-starting Honda’s big comeback, accounting for 63 percent of the company’s sales last year. It’s clear Indians love this type of car, and no amount of awkward styling or compromised boot space will deter them.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-comparorear.jpg

So it’s no wonder that Hyundai decided to jump on the bandwagon this year with the new Xcent. We were pretty impressed when we drove it, but how does it fare against the two established segment champs – the Dzire and the Amaze?

Design

Any designer tasked with cramming a practical cabin and a sedan’s boot into a four-metre footprint while still making it look good is going to have a hard time. Maruti’s designers had it worst, because the Dzire is based on the Swift, which has a distinct two-box shape. Whilst the long bonnet and relatively short cabin give the Swift its sporty stance, it doesn’t save millimetres on the inside. That’s where the Brio and Grand i10 with their relatively short bonnets and more ‘cab forward’ stance have an advantage.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-xcntpan.jpg

The results are plain to see. The Dzire’s boot looks like a mere concession and is unsurprisingly, the smallest at 316 litres. It makes the car look ‘squished’ and completely unlike a conventional sedan in profile. Yes, the wraparound tail-lamps and the band of chrome add some character, but the overall look is still pretty awkward.

The Amaze and the Xcent are much better proportioned. Both have slightly stubby noses, yes, but just the sheer length of the rear overhang compared to the Dzire’s means they look like actual sedans. Their trunk volumes are pretty generous too – 400 litres for the Honda and 407 for the Hyundai. Overall, we prefer the Amaze’s styling – it’s got the more cohesive shape, and the window line which rises sharply towards the rear gives the Honda a nice and sporty look. The boot has been cleverly made to look wider than it is, and the pronounced lines down the sides give it character.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-amazepan.jpg

The Xcent’s smart nose and subtle chrome detailing make it look quite upmarket, but the overall proportions of the car are rather underwhelming. In fact, the Xcent looks a class smaller than the others, and this is most obvious from the rear, which is characterised by a flat boot and meek-looking tail-lamps.

On the inside

Even in cars as compact as these, a lot of folks are still chauffeur-driven. With this in mind, Honda stretched the Brio’s wheelbase for the Amaze by 60mm to free up more rear legroom and it’s worked wonders – it’s easily the best of this trio. They’ve also scooped out the doors to maximise the useable width back here, and it also has the most comfortable seat. The cushioning is superb, you sit nice and high and there’s decent legroom all round.

Hyundai has carried over the seat from the Grand i10 hatch, but it’s been tweaked a bit. There’s generous leg- and headroom to suit tall passengers, but the cabin is the narrowest of the lot, which makes it best suited for two. The seats are nicely contoured with firm but generous cushioning, but the backrest angle is a touch too reclined.

The lack of legroom in the back seat of the Dzire is most obvious in this company. With tall passengers up front, those in the rear will have their knees pressed against the front seat backs. The seats are, however, sufficiently wide and really plush so, for short people, the space is quite acceptable.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-amazeint.jpg

However, the Dzire pampers the driver well with a generous bucket seat, making long drives quite comfortable. You sit high up too, and what lies in front of you is a high-quality dashboard with a smart-looking centre console. The two-tone design is a bit unimaginative though. It looks like Maruti engineers have merely swathed the lower half with a coat of beige. The lower buttons are beige too, which apart from looking at odds with the regular black knobs higher up, tend to get dirty with constant handling.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-_DSC3087 copy.jpg

The two-tone effect is more classily executed in the Xcent and cabin quality is superb. You get good materials, great fit and finish, and a very modern-looking dashboard. The seats, like the ones in the back, are supportive but a bit firm, but the big-rimmed steering is wrapped in soft leather and feels great to hold. Overall, the ambience here is the best in this group, and you really feel like you’re in a proper mid-size sedan from the driver’s seat.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-dzireint.jpg

The Amaze’s cockpit is one of its biggest stumbling blocks. The dashboard plastics don’t have the richness of the others and the overall design feels really budget. The audio system and old-school AC controls feel like they were added on after the dash was designed, and the impression you get is of a last-generation car. However, the driving position is absolutely spot-on – you sit low, the gear lever falls perfectly to hand and the dashboard is nice and low for a good view out.

Equipment

The features you get in this top-end Xcent SX (with the option pack) could easily embarrass some executive sedans, and if equipment is important to you, look no further. There’s auto climate control, a rear AC vent, keyless entry and go, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera with its display housed in the auto-dimming mirror. There are electric folding mirrors, a cooled glovebox, a 1GB hard drive for your music, Bluetooth, USB, aux-in and a CD player. And considering it’s cheaper than the Amaze VX and only slightly more expensive than the Dzire ZDi, that’s saying a lot.

Comparatively, the top-end Amaze does get electric folding mirrors and a USB and aux-enabled audio system, but there’s no CD player or Bluetooth. It also misses out on climate control, which the top Dzire also gets, and though the Maruti gets a CD player, aux-in and USB, it too misses out on Bluetooth.

While all the top variants here come with ABS and two airbags, you must remember to tick the ‘Option Pack’ on the Hyundai to get these safety features, as well as the 15-inch alloys.

Performance

Here’s where things really start to differ. Had we compared the petrol versions of these cars, the three would probably be quite closely matched, but not the diesels. The Xcent uses the Grand i10’s new 1.1-litre three-cylinder motor with a touch more power and torque. It’s extremely responsive at low revs and there’s virtually no turbo lag, which makes the Xcent perfectly suited for city driving. There’s no spike in the mid-range; instead, there’s a gradual build-up of power which rapidly tails off when you cross 3,800rpm. With no top-end grunt, overtaking is an effort and the Xcent doesn’t feel quite at home on the highway.

In contrast, the Amaze has the performance and that’s not surprising. It has the biggest, most powerful engine – 1.5 litres, 98.6bhp and 20.39kgm of torque. That extra displacement gets it off the line easier and the incredibly flat torque curve delivers an even and steady surge to a rather modest 4,200rpm redline. There’s not much of a top end here either, but that’s okay, because there’s so much torque everywhere else, which makes overtaking in the Amaze rather easy. It’s the refinement of the engine that disappoints. Insufficient sound insulation of the aluminium-blocked engine means a lot of noise, so the performance is always accompanied by a loud drone, right from the get go. It’s one of the Amaze’s biggest shortcomings.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-xcenttrack.jpg

The Dzire’s 74bhp, 1.3-litre diesel feels the most old-school of the lot. There’s a fair bit of turbo lag until 2,000rpm, after which you’re firmly punched in the gut by a massive chunk of torque that comes in all at once. It’s certainly entertaining, but first-time diesel drivers will have to learn to modulate the power delivery a bit. However, there’s a lot of real-world performance, and overtaking is a breeze if you can get your shifts right – it’s actually the quickest in the sprints from 20-80kph in third and 40-100kph in fourth. The Dzire has the best refinement – again thanks to its more premium roots – and both noise and vibrations are very well suppressed in the cabin at idle and at speed.

0_0_0_0_70_http---i.haymarket.net.au-Features-amazetrack.jpg

All three cars have controls that are easy to use. The Xcent’s gearlever has a slightly longer throw, but in practice, it’s hardly an issue, especially since the clutch is delightfully light. There’s a bit more heft to the Dzire’s clutch and gearshift, but it’s easy enough nonetheless. The Amaze uses a stubby, short-throw lever which slots in precisely, but the clutch is on the heavier side.
The Amaze, despite having the largest engine – 1.5 litres – managed an impressive 15.2kpl and 20.8kpl in the city and highway runs respectively, while the Dzire was able to give us a decent 14.6kpl and 19.8kpl. The Xcent, with its small, three-cylinder motor, returned 16.2kpl in the city, the best number here, and 20.3kpl on the highway – marginally less than the Honda, because you have to work the 1.1-litre engine harder on the open road.

re: Mega Comparo – Tata Zest vs Maruti Swift Dzire vs Honda Amaze vs Hyundai Xcent vs For

So if i was interested in these Compact Sedans, i would pick them based on my requirements and the positives these cars offer.

Fuel - PETROL

If i wanted AT, then i will pick Amaze because of the superior 5-Speed gearbox compared to 4-speed on other two cars.

If i wanted a car with slight compromise in performance but higher fuel economy, i would pick Dzire.

If i wanted a car that is loaded with equipment, i would pick Xcent.

Fuel - DIESEL

If i wanted a car with good mileage and decent power, i would pick Dzire.

If i wanted a car which doesn't give strain (Read Power and Driveability) i would pick the Amaze.

If i wanted a car which is loaded with features and ready to compromise on power plant, i would pick Xcent.

From the above observations,

Xcent scores only on Equipment and nothing else example(Engines, Driveability, Fuel Economy, Handling). The Kappa engine is good but its thirsty, the U2 Diesel is efficient but underpowered. Xcent is also narrower then Dzire, Amaze.

Conclusion - Neither engines offer good combination of performance and mileage.

Dzire is the best selling car. Despite having longer wheelbase then rivals, the cabin smaller along with boot. So the Dzire negatives are Ugly Boot Design, Lack of Space, Small Boot.
The engine is refined then older Dzire. It also delivers decent mileage.

Now Amaze, It was Honda's first Diesel car and to be frank its better then its rivals. Now the Amaze sells only 1/3 of Dzire. Lets not forget Honda has much lesser Outlets then Maruti. Lesser Dealerships = Lower Sales.

The Amaze ticks all the right boxes. Its petrol engine is proven one and it also has a better AT gearbox. The diesel is powerful and efficient. The cabin and boot are spacious. Dynamics are better then other two. Yes it too has negatives like noisy engine and boring Dashboard design.

Wait a minute, when Maruti Suzuki launched Swift in Diesel avatar, its engine was loud enough to be heard in cabin and outside. My Swift had completed 65k and even after that much running the engine was noisy despite regular services. Now did that noise prevent me and other Indians from buying Swift Diesel ? Absolutely Not.

Honda too will make changes to the engine mounts, internal components to make it more refined just as Maruti did it for New Dzire.

After the launch of Xcent, a question from auto journalist was asked to Mr Jnaneswar Sen Sr. Vice President (Marketing &Sales) Honda Cars India Ltd. The question was - Now that Xcent has launched, will the Amaze be revamped ? Mr.Sen - No, we'll focus on Quality, Reliabilty, Perfomance, Fuel Efficiency, Space. He also said you can add accessories, but you can't add Space. He is 100% correct.

So after all this comparison, its the Honda Amaze which has least negatives and is the Best car in its Segment.

Tata Zest Revotron 1.2T Petrol Review:

Exteriors:

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-headlights-and-DRLs.jpg

The Zest petrol we drove is the top-end XT trim. It is differentiated from the Zest diesel AMT XMA variant by LED daytime running lights and 8-spoke alloy wheels. The bootlid carries the ‘Revotron’ badge and visual differences go only this far.

Speaking numbers, the Zest petrol gets a ground clearance of 175 mm (165 mm for the diesel AMT) and the car will weigh between 1,115-1,135 kg.

Interiors:

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-Auto-AC-touch.jpg

Inside, the XT trim adds driver-seat height adjustment, auto down driver side window, a touchscreen infotainment system with voice recognition and automatic climate control. The display of the AC system appears on the touchscreen unit and can also be controlled via the rotary knobs. Additionally, the AC and several other features for music and communication, can be controlled via voice commands. The voice recognition system had no problems recognizing the Indian accent and acted quickly.

Features:

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-Eco-and-Sport.jpg

As mentioned earlier, variants and features will be revealed at the launch, however, the Zest petrol we drove is the range-topping XT variant. It gets daytime running lights, projector lights, foglights, alloy wheels, steering integrated controls, keyless entry, Bluetooth-enabled music system, voice recognition, touchscreen audio, climate control, reverse parking sensors, driver seat height adjustment and three driving modes.

Safety features include ABS, EBD and dual front airbags.

Engine and Gearbox:

The Zest petrol is powered by Tata’s all-new petrol engine. The 1.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor called Revotron makes 90 PS (88.7 bhp) and 140 Nm of torque and uses a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-engine.jpg

The Revotron motor scores highly on NVH: It’s near silent at idle – outside and inside – and while driving, the motor revs until 5,000 rpm and the engine feels extremely smooth even at the lower regions. Low-speed performance of the engine is pretty good as well, as there is no turbolag or turboboost to be felt. Sadly, this is where the good bits end.

In terms of outright power, or performance, the Revotron doesn’t have much to talk about. It takes its own sweet time to rev from 1,000 to 5,000 rpm, and you’re left wanting for more performance. The 140 Nm of torque is claimed to arrive between 1,750-3,000 rpm, but the mid-range performance of the car doesn’t suggest so. Instead, the Revotron engine builds up its outputs gradually.

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-tacho.jpg

This is however, without a question of doubt, Tata’s best petrol engine ever made, but it falls short of the competition. You’re left thinking as to why Tata chose turbocharging, as rival products feel better to drive despite being naturally aspirated. If the turbo’s aim was improving fuel economy, the news isn’t all that great as the on-board computer didn’t show a number higher than 9 km/l.

Coming to the three driving modes, this feels like a gimmick. Each of the three driving modes have separate engine and throttle maps according to Tata engineers. Switching from City mode (default) to Sports mode gets slightly better results, however, the car gets a bit jerky from the throttle response. In the Eco mode, the engine takes even longer to rev up, the idea being the driver will shift early to a higher gear thereby reducing fuel consumption. We don’t imagine that prospective customers are going to be amused by this feature at the end of the day.

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-gearlever.jpg

The gearbox, for most of the time, feels precise (it is not as slick as the Maruti Dzire though) and the clutch has very little travel and is light to operate.

Ride and Handling:

This department is similar to the Zest diesel. Thanks to the lighter weight, the Zest petrol feels more nimble to turn.

Brakes and Safety:

The braking feel and power of the Zest petrol is similar to the diesel. However, the top-end XT trim adds driver and passenger airbags in addition to ABS and EBD.

Fuel Efficiency:

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-efficiency.jpg

The Zest’s Revotron unit, when driven with a light foot, can return about 11 km/l in city driving conditions. However, the number dropped to 8 km/l when driven a bit hard. Rival products would seem more efficient compared to the Zest Revotron, though the ARAI figure is awaited for a fair comparison.

Prices:

The Zest petrol should be priced in the region of INR 5.0 lakhs to INR 6.5 lakhs, ex-Showroom, New Delhi.

Verdict:

Tata-Zest-Revotron-Petrol-Review-badge.jpg

It may seem like choosing between apples and oranges, but its the diesel variant of the Zest which has better finesse and better performance at the end of the day.

The petrol motor, as mentioned earlier, maybe Tata’s best attempt till date, but it needs more work to even rival naturally-aspirated engines from Honda and Maruti. Tata has got three things right with this engine: noise, vibrations and low-speed performance. However, an enthusiastic driving performance, that’s a given in a turbocharged engine, isn’t there.

As a complete product, it is the Zest diesel (specifically diesel AMT) which gets our vote as Tata’s ‘comeback car’.

I voted for Tata Zest, since tata knowns indian conditions very well, exterior design is great( tata has always brought revolutionary exterior designs, only their engineering hurts), hoping tata developing the ass and bring good quality parts so that we have trouble free ownership.

Comparo – Tata Zest vs Maruti Swift Dzire vs Honda Amaze vs Hyundai Xcent

The Tata Zest will be here next month to upset the apple cart in the compact sedan segment where Maruti, Honda and Hyundai have all benefited in. Here is our tech spec camparo of the Zest with its intended rivals, the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze and the Hyundai Xcent.

With all its rivals stealing a spot in June’s top 10 best sellers, things are looking up for the Zest’s segment.

Tata Zest Diesel vs Rivals

Tata-Zest-diesel-vs-rivals.jpg
The Zest diesel will also come with a five-speed manual transmission, but its specifications have not been announced.

The Honda Amaze emerges as the most powerful car in its crop with an output of 98 bhp (100 PS) from its 1.5-litre engine. The Xcent makes do with the smallest (1.1-litre three-cylinder) engine which is also the least powerful of the lot at (70.5 bhp) 72 PS. The Zest and the Swift Dzire employ the same 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet motor but the former has 88.2 bhp (90 PS) on tap, thanks to a Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT), while the latter delivers 73.5 bhp (75 PS).

The Amaze and the Zest generate the highest torque at 200 Nm while the Xcent, with an output of 180.4 Nm, finds itself at the bottom of chart. The Tata Zest’s biggest USP, and the one that makes all the difference, is its AMT gearbox while the rest are equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions. The Zest will also come with a five-speed manual gearbox.

This comparo will be revised once the Zest’s fuel economy rating and prices are announced. As of now, the Amaze returns 25.8 km/l, the Xcent 24.4 km/l while the Dzire delivers 23.4 km/l. In terms of pricing, the Amaze has the most expensive base variant at INR 5.97 lakhs while the Xcent is the most affordable car at INR 5.56 lakhs (both the prices ex-showroom Delhi). The Zest also enjoys the very unique distinction of being the cheapest diesel-automatic car in India.

All these compact sedans are powered by 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engines but the Zest’s unit is turbocharged. The Zest is the most powerful car in the segment at 88.2 bhp (90 PS) closely followed by the Amaze at 86.2 bhp (88PS) and the Swift Dzire at 85.2 bhp (87 PS) while the Xcent is the least powerful at 81.34 bhp (83 PS).

Again, prices or FE figures of the Zest petrol have not been revealed. The Xcent and the Swift Dzire deliver an identical 19.1 km/l (with a manual gearbox) while the Amaze manages 18 km/l.

Just like the diesel lineup, the Amaze is the most expensive car, starting at INR 6.7 lakhs and the Xcent is the most affordable, starting at INR 6.28 lakhs (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi)
