Ride and Handling

The zest eats potholes and undulations on roads and highways for breakfast. Bigger bumps are transmitted and very large patches may throw the passengers but if driven properly even they can be cleared without any issues. The ground clearance of 175 mm is a boon for our roads, the zest has made through many large speed breakers and bad roads but it never scraped.

The only two instances where I scraped was when I took the cellar parking ramp at very high speeds and that was my mistake as it is common even for vehicles with 190-210 mm ground clearance vehicles to slow down there.

At corners it has a bit of a body roll owing to its height, heavy weight and ground clearance. I tried sharp turns at speeds of 80-100 kmph and it showed a bit of understeer.

Speeds upto 50-55 kmph are manageable on sharp turns.

The high speed nature of zest is good and the steering weighs up too early.

The ultra light EPS unit of ZF steering is good and I wish the steering weighs up a bit late as speeds climb up, it would further improve the handling of the zest on highways.

One feels to be in control and the steering inspires good confidence.

There is a peculiar sound at the steering column which I have planned to get it checked in the next service.

Acceleration and Brakes

I have already covered the pick up and acceleration of the zest in the second part, so I will cover the braking ability of the zest here.

The brakes in the XMS are equipped with anti lock breaking mechanism, (ABS of 9th generation from Bosch) which are good.

The initial brake play is a bit less and one feels if the brakes may stop the vehicle or not, but if applied with appropriate pressure the zest stops drastically from high speeds.

I had two instances where the zest stopped from speeds of 80kmph and 60kmph to standstill without any fuss.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH)

The zest is silent with windows rolled up. On start up if one has a keen ear they can listen to a faint transmission noise which is emitted very prominently especially during start up on early mornings.

There is a mild vibration when the zest runs at high speeds with a.c full blast as the compressor takes the load. There is a firewall for insulation that is used to reduce the noise and vibrations from filtering into the cabin.

The road noise and small thuds are usually present but if one has the music playing even that is not audible.

Sound system aka Harman Kardon system

This music system is simply great. I have XMS version which has lesser quality than the XT version HK system, but even then there is no coarseness and the sound from the system is delivered very appropriately . All the tweeters, speakers and bass system are simply great working in sync with each other and give an all round theatrical effect.

Headlights

The low beam is not upto the mark and not apt for our roads. It is due to this that I have to use high beam many times inspite of not being happy about it. The headlights are good on highways and give a very premium feel to it. The projector headlights are very cool with a mix of white light to it.

Space and comfort

The zest is very spacious as it is based on the vista platform. 3 people can easily sit in the rear seat. Due to its bench type of seat, the passengers can sit comfortably.

The suspension is softly sprung and it is because of this the ride is very comfortable. Comfort is given priority over high speed sharp handling and it shows on our indian roads.

The front passenger seat is the most comfortable place to sit [:)]

I hope I have covered all aspects of zest, if any parts are left out I request our TAI members to do mention that so that I cover them as well.

I will try my best to keep this thread updated and post any updates as and when there are any in my ownership of the zest.

I have gone through your thread and its explanation, how can it be installed in tata zest.

Can we get it installed at the service centre and buy it online.

Went for a short expressway drive of hundred kms on the zest.

The revotron was happy that finally it found some relief from stop and go traffic.

While returning to hyderabad an idiotic trucker just came onto to cross the road, so I had to slow down.

It is when a mercedes benz CLA class car came racing behind him. He had a hard time to overtake me. Since I was nearing city outskirts the traffic starting building up. On open stretches the CLA would overtake me.

Then a hyundai verna diesel and honda city petrol joined us. We weren't taking risks or anything but these guys started a healthy cat race.

They had a hard time keeping up with the zest. It is then that I understood that the revotron if spinning at higher revvs can keep up with most of the cars.

At a particular stretch the zest overtook all 3 of them. It is only when the zest slows down and goes to lower revvs that it takes time to build up speeds.

During this time, those guys pulled up the revvs and went a long away.

So overall its a mixed feedback from the revotron today. I have completed the run in period, so tried driving at triple digit speeds on safe and empty stretches.

The ride quality is good but the steering becomes a bit vague to my liking at these speeds.

After reaching hyderabad the engine felt very smooth and opened up a lot. It has started responding well to throttle inputs.

Stalling Issue

The car gave 3 to 4 jerks today again. The re-flashing has not helped up and the car is having that issue again.

Today I observed how the problem takes place. The engine light and battery light glows on the dashboard and there is a sound that come for two to three times.

This sound is similar to the one that comes when we drive without the seat belt buckled up.

Not sure what to do. It is getting very risky with this issue as we cannot predict when it may happen.

Once the car stalled in the middle of an overtaking maneouver and had a very scary time with it.

I'm sure you had some fun with the cat & mouse. it's always gets the blood circulating. May I know what top speeds you managed? and how was the composure on those speeds?

oh those stalling issues are serious sweat-bringers. I think the sound you're hearing is some kind of ecu Warning. it could be a faulty sensor. perhaps something is overheating. or It could be faulty ecu itself. did they check all the cables & Power going to ecu is solid ?

I am not sure about ecu, but before coming home i filled petrol and parked in our cellar.

After 3-4 hours i opened driver door and the whole car was filled with petrol smell.

I had to use full blast of a/c to clear the smell.

I managed 110 kmph, but I had to slow down due to traffic. Lack of lane driving by trucks and bikers didn't allow me to speed much.

Petrol smell is wiered. This is dangerous situation go to ASS ASAP.

However, there was in issue around petrol smell in the car dont where I read whether it was here or on tbhp. The ASS guys sorted that issue out. Probably you could check for the leakage of petrol while filling. See if the cap was fully shut by the fueling station guy. Also not sure though but in case of petrol smell i would suggest you not to turn on electricals just open the doors and let the smell go away.

One more resource on net i found out on the petrol smell.

@vickyjoshi-
Much informative information provided by you.
I also found this problem in my car once but disappear after some time and not occurs again, so I ignored. What is possibility for that?

Sorry for this OT post:

Smell of Petrol could be actual petrol smell coming due to leakage of petrol in the pipe joints carrying fuel to the engine, intector or at the petrol filling point where the cap is not tightly fitter.
There could other smell (petrol buring smell) or more so the exhaust smell due to unclean or clog exhaust systems.

It could also be vaporised fuel seeping out of the fuel inlet and coming in the cabin.

there could be other reasons which I may not have been able to think about but all the same its is better to get things check thoroughly at the Service center.
