Now this seriously calls for setting right the issue whether to stop the production or make the changes in engine or body,or even change the quality of the parts.
You are jumping to conclusions without knowing anything about the cause. How do you know what the issue is?

The biggest issue to start with is the fact that people blow everything out of proportion and do not know what the causes are. So, stop making an issue.

If its with one or two cases, its fine that people wont make an issue,But more than that is not a small thing??(Even an little knowledgeable person on automobile will know the reason behind it)

Should have read the news posted before, the vehicle was burnt in spite of keeping the safety kit

Anyway no offence meant [cheers]

I am only for nearly 32 years in the automotive engineering field. I have influenced the design of motor vehicles as a consultant of the industries and am a long standing performance tuner with in house development of performance tuning parts as well as non performance related parts.

Every day several cars go up in flames without being involved in an accident. And many more cars are being torched every day.

Nobody made a big fuss when nearly three times as many Ferrari 458s went up in flames.

The next question hardly anyone looks into is why the Nanos caught fire.

Out of the 10 or so Nanos that suffered from fire/smoke 3 had an steering column switch problem caused by a downgraded switch quality. Tata changed the supplier.

The remaining cases had more than one cause and some the causes are not clear.

It was also reported that at least one of them was equipped with additional electronics (stereo) which is not a standard spec situation.

For you it might be clear cut, but for a professional like me who needs to investigate products to make them safe it is different.

A lot of the reasons are outside the production of the cars.

One of the scenarios we have seen repeatedly is that people alter the stereo. The higher power consumption leads to blowing fuses. These then are replaced with higher rated fuses. This has resulted in a number of cases in wires or alternators catching fire.

The Nano is designed to a budget. Making alterations is not what it was designed for. When people then go and make changes then they should not go and blame the Nano for their own stupidity.

There is many more reasons for problems not caused by the product rather than the people owning the products or the people round it.

I am not Indian. However, I have no reason to run down the Nano. The Nano has gotten a reputation it does not deserve.

I have all the reasons to maintain my position that the Nano is a good product.

And just for the people who might think my background is allowing me only to ever be able to afford a Nano:

We had three 911s among other cars at home. And I will buy a Nano, just because it is fun.

Okay i understood, infact this educated me.
But the company/Dealers should bring about strict rules about the stereo & components vulnerable to ignition of fire by the ways like cancelling the Warranty and Conditions should be put forth so there will be no problems in the near future

They do. It is all written about it in the owners manual. It is just that most people do not take any notice. And some of the ones who know do not care. This is what we engineers fight against.

Even telling them that it will lead to a total loss of warranty does not change things.

With the can bus systems in most of the cars now it is not possible to just change the head unit. It is coded into the system. But people get around it by purchasing additional electronics that mimics the head unit coding.

I have only one word to describe what is going on and that is "sabotage". Either that or owner stupidity in going to aftermarket rather than the dealer for accessories. TATA Motors should reduce the price of aftermarket accessories to ensure customers come back to the dealer for the same. Sometimes i wonder if Ratan Tata is in charge anymore or has given up in disgust. I wouldn't blame him if he has. If anyone can outdo the Americans in the "dirty tricks department" it is the Indians, save for the fact that India is a regional force and doesn't play large else the world will know the true colors by now. See how the PM is relentlessly hounded and persecuted in India. Another decent man like Tata.

guys tata is recalling nanos to upgrade their ecus - info from motorbeam..

Tata Motors is now recalling Nanos to update their ECU software. The update is regarding the starter assembly of the car which needs to be protected from over cranking. Over cranking is manually done by the driver which leads wear and tear of the engine and may even fail the engine unit. Generally every car manufacturer update their ECU’s well in advance so that this issue does not occur. To see whether your Nano is a victim of this what you need to do is turn the ignition key to engine starting\cranking position and keep your ears wide open, if you hear the starter motor engage then that’s a clear signal that you should be on your way to the Tata service center to upgrade the ECU of your Nano.

this is great news. But I never heard about any technical problems in Nano as many of my friends are using.

I would like to quote the views of Ratan Tata in concern to lowering sales due to fire issues of Nano. This is taken from Autocar India Sep. 2011 issue.

“I believe that setback of fires and other technical problems can happen with any new car. There are vested interests that have been quick to use that against us and we have to be quick to counter them and not just view it as being a great negative or base our lack of performance on this issue. We have to deal appropriately with the fall-out and re-instate public confidence. We need to be pro-active and not defensive.”
