Tata to recall Nano to install fire safety measures

Tata Motors today said it will be recalling some of its small car Nano to install safety measures to prevent the vehicle catching fire.

"Yes, customers have been informed. Some have been already recalled," Tata Motors Managing Director ( India Operations) P M Telang said.

There are about 70,000 Nanos on the roads now, he added. When asked how many vehicles would be recalled, Telang said: "We don't know exactly how many vehicles will be recalled as we have to check how many Nanos have to be rectified."

Yesterday, Tata Motors Group CEO and Managing Director Carl-Peter Forster had said that the auto maker planned to introduce additional safety features in the small car in the wake of reports of the car catching fire.

"The company has taken up several corrective measures and will now offer cover tool on catalytic converter to prevent the car from catching fire. It will also install fuse in electrical components to avoid short circuits," he had said.

In August, a sixth incident of a Nano catching fire since the car was commercially launched in March 2009, was reported from the national Capital, three months after a company probe declared the car was "absolutely safe".

In May, the company had declared that an expert team had found 'no manufacturing defects' in the Nano.

The five previous incidents were reported from across the country, including Mumbai, Lucknow, Delhi and near Vadodara in Gujarat.

Talk about a Hot hatch! Lol.[lol]

On the serious note, I personally dont like the Nano one bit. It looks like a car from a comedy alien flick with the bugsy headlights. I would go for a pre-owned 800 or any other hatch available for the price.

Another thing was that earlier I read somewhere Tata saying that this issue was the result of a conspiracy to ruin their goodwill and had nothing to do with the build quality or technical glitches.

Hi guys,

The Nano was all over the news channels yesterday. It sure was funny hearing them reiterate constantly that the there was no 'recall'; it was merely a precautionary measure to provide better service to our existing customers.

The world over, car manufacturers are being faced with the problem of recalls. The reasons range from poor QC to faulty parts/design, etc. Ask Honda, BMW, etc.

While the Nano has been built to a price, Tata motors would do well to own up to the faults and correct them rather than trying to convince the people to blindly buy their baby. As an Indian, i'm proud of the Nano, but i would love to see Tata fixing its safety glitches.

Cheers,
Girish :)

I do agree with sgirish. Tatas should openly admit and fix their glitches if there are any. The way i see it is that the issues might actually be relevant to those nanos which caught fire. After having done grueling journeys like the himalayan roads and all as the tele journalists in auto shows claim, how has the nano not shown signs of breaking down? And addidng to that, there have been reports of many other cars catching fire due short circuits. so why single out nano?

Re: Tata Nano On Fire!! Edit: Now One more!

The saga of Tata Nano catching fire does not seems to end, as yet. Another Tata Nano has recently caught fire in Ahmedabad, when the driver of car Vipul Jani was returning back to home. Here is what Tata has to say:

As admitted by the owner there were certain unauthorised electrical fitments in the car which may be the cause of the incident. Tata Motors is investigating the incident. The company would like to re-iterate that the Tata Nano is a robust car. Source: Indian Express

These continued incidents will definitely hamper the sales of Nano just like they did in Nov last year.

As admitted by the owner there were certain unauthorised electrical fitments in the car which may be the cause of the incident.
I guess the manufacturers and dealer count ICE(even its better HU) or any other such enhancement as unauthorised fitment.

This is real bad news!

+1 to Akash's statement , they must be using the after-market ICE for cover up!

You buy that car for nearly 2 lacs

1. which does not have a left side rear view mirror
2. cannot customize as it can catch fire
3. do not know when other electrical components will give up

phew [frustration]

People would rather go for Alto blind-folded [thumbsup]

Don't wish to turn this into Nano vs Alto thread though, but it's correct that a Nano for as much price as of an Alto does not makes much of sense. This car might be spacious and what not but Tata has used low quality material (Cheaper than an 800), which is OK just for a Lakh Rupee car and not more than that. Maruti Alto will of course make a better bet if both fall under same price range.

Guess what? Just a few days ago on June 1, another Tata Nano turned into ashes in Vadodara. This is the statement of fire officials:

The engine of a Nano car caught fire near the Samta police outpost in Subanpura locality gutting down the front seat. The vehicle belonged to Mr Mayank Doshi.

How come 'DNA' is the only publication worldwide to carry the lead story and no other details have been made public as to the year of manufacture and if there were any modifications done to the car?. Seems very fishy and where is the authentication of this story?. Which "fire official"?. Some other indian auto websites have only carried the DNA link and nothing more. All i can say that this is B*** S***.

i plainly cannot believe such incidents.

i can agree to the fact that initail fire incidents can be genuine but not after company has claimed to resolved it.

if any tai'n has any doubt just go and inspect the nano and tell how different is this car from rest of the cars.

nano and indica almost shares similar materials as far as i have observed.

these incidents more or less sounds like conspiracy or deliberate attempt to degrade the perception of nano.

let us be more clear than to believe obvious hearsay.
