Re: Tata Nano Diesel Expected Launch By 2013

Interesting to know that TM thinks that for a small/light car like Tata Nano, power steering matters all that much!

If they can just work on making the Nano exhaust sound lesser like a two wheeler or autorick then maybe a whole lot of people might be less embarassed to go ahead & buy it. Sometimes its things which might appear to the manufacturer to be the most silly/trivial which might be big negatives for most customers!
Don't know about others, but I won't buy any car without PS for sure(call me spoiled or what, lol). When I took the TD of Nano, few years ago,its steering at parking speeds was really heavy. So an electornic PS unit will be nice to have. And agree about the sound part, though recent Nanos seem to have more muted exhaust that the earlier ones:)

Well I guess, TATA should follow the Ecosport model for TATA Nano, They should have Nano with the basic avatar for around 1.5 lacs, at one end of spectrum and come out with a really powerful may be 1 ltr engine with good torque engine and with automatic transmission [surprise] and all Jazzz at around 3.5/4 lacs could be the other end of spectrum.

Incorporate a few elements from the Pixel/ megapixel designs. Then that could be well be marketed as smart city car.

My analogy below on why Nano pricing is not right & why it might not be selling & Alto does.

By the way with US$ hovering at RS 70 its a good time to try to get approvals for Nano in US to export there maybe ...

Tata Nano: $3,000 Car Coming To U.S.

Even if the US version of Nano is made differently & sells even at $5000 it will still be the cheapest car in US & get excellent revenues for TM.

Tata Motors to launch Nano diesel ‘this financial year’

Karl Slym, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors, told Reuters in a recent interview that the Nano diesel would be launched in this financial year. He said -
The diesel Nano is still (going) ahead, but not launched yet… This financial year.
The Nano diesel is likely to source power from an 800cc two-cylinder engine producing about 40bhp at 4,000rpm. The turbocharger for the Nano diesel could be supplied by Garrett and you can expect the ARAI to peg the fuel efficiency at about 35-40km/l, making it the most fuel economical car in the country.

Nano diesel could incorporate a proper hatch door, thus providing easy access to the boot. Even the design of the rear windscreen seems to be altered. The front and rear bumpers are all new and the Nano based on Shoeb’s rendering, has a ‘smiling face’ to it.

Given that Tata wants to launch the Nano diesel by the end of this financial year, we certainly expect the small wonder to make headlines at the 2014 Auto Expo which is scheduled in February. The diesel version should give the Nano the sales numbers it had always deserved.

Re: Tata Nano Diesel Expected Launch By 2013

I personally feel this is the best plan which will work out for Tata Motors to come out of the branding of a Taxi car. If diesel motors are fit in the Nano, then there will be a huge mad rush of Taxi fleet guys to own one and again rot the branding of Tata Motors. This not only puts diesel nano to rest but also puts the taxi fleet to own a nano to rest. NOw, Nano just remains as a cute family car with the non-fleet owners. Thats good.

Though Tata Motors has scrapped diesel plans for the Nano, but it could be looking at utilising the same engine for other vehicles in its portfolio. Sources said that this two-cylinder diesel engine could fire up other commercial vehicle variants.
Tata Motors definitely are onto something big with the new models this time both in commercial and passenger segments. Lets wait and watch.

EV Nano will be a better choice. Yes Indians love diesel but the rear engine arrangement may cause more vibrations and noise to filter into the cabin. Better they bring out the 3 pot Nano at the earliest which can result in better NVH levels and add more fun to drive character to the cute little car..!![:)]

Sadly TML have shelved the Nano Diesel
Tatas shelve plan to introduce diesel variant of Nano - Economic Times
It seems a sensible business decision
Seemed a car that could turn the Nano's fortune around for a while!
But this was the news published on April,2014!!! Is this still valid now???

The main reason Launch is deferred is the engine was too loud where the company couldn't find a solution,I feel it's a good move Tata stopped/delayed the launch of this diesel version, because now as people purchase the car just to try it, will tomorrow complain about the engine noise which will again affect the car's sales like before, they won't think this before buying.

I don't think they just stopped because we had seen many test cars, the news that honeywell providing turbocharger. Might take time.

Found this at the latest news dated 18th November 2014. Looks like it is not yet a confirmed news. BUt as of now, the diesel engine team for Nano at Tata Motors has been given a 3-cylinder petrol engine project to work on which makes nano compete with the likes of Hyundai Eon, Datsun Go and etc...

All eyes were set on Tata Nano, which was expected to revive the car’s fortunes in India, however, if the reports received recently, are trusted, Tata Motors has completely stopped the project for an indefinite period. The team, which was behind the project, has been reassigned different projects. Incidentally, the Engineering Research Centre at Pimpri was assigned the job to revive the Nano. However, the entire team has been shifted to some different project according to the reports.

There are no confirmed reports about the recent stopping of the revival of Nano. However, there are some speculations that deregulation of diesel price by the Indian government is behind the entire decision. This has directly led to the bridging of the price gap between petrol and diesel cars. This has led to the decrease in the importance of diesel cars and most customers are transferring back to petrol cars. The asking price of the car is expected to boost up, which might also be one of the reasons for stopping its production entirely. Tata Motors was also having a hard time dealing with NVH levels, which is Noise, Vibration and Harshness levels, for the engine make of Nano diesel.

Due to the shifting of focus from Nano diesel, the resources have been reallocated the triple cylinder petrol engine project. This will make it fall in line with the likes of Hyundai Eon, Datsun Go and Maruti Alto 800. The car will also get some mechanical as well as cosmetic updates and is trying to place itself in the compact hatchback segment. Going by this, Nano is set to face a disappointing outing regarding the diesel engine car. It is only a matter of time to decide whether the new petrol variant is able to make up for its diesel counterpart, as well.
