OK, but what about India ? I feel traction control & ESP should suffice.
And yes, had I been in Afghanistan, I would pick UV anytime !!
No Traction Control & ESP will not suffice in those conditions. In that situation only a AWD or 4WD system helps. I have used those and at times when i didn't had that option got stuck.
And my point is not about India, US or any other country. It's about a sedan with AWD option.

So i didn't understand where that Afghanistan thing came into picture and what actually you want to say?

I disagree. I don't think you have to shift up and down to keep them moving. They make their power and torque way lower than sedans. And its usually torque that is a defining factor when going about in hills.
I also disagree. It all depends on which car & which engine, nothing to do with whether its an SUV or sedan.

In a recent meet, on steep inclines, a Scorpio was easily climbing in second gear whereas a Honda City could not, it had to downshift to first. Simply because of the low end torque of the mHawk engine...
Well, now let me make a short comparo and you people will get appropriate answer of the above mentioned facts.Simple it is "I DON'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH POWERFUL CAR IS ON PAPER,I BELIEVE ON HOW IT BEHAVES IN REAL WORLD",So here I compare some SUVs with some sedans costing nearly same to them:-

Mahindra Bolero:Have good power and torque on paper.
Maruti suzuki Swift DZire ZDi:Bolero can't even touch it on the hills, anyone who has doubt that this sedan can't cope up a Bolero on inclines should think twice before mentioning it.

Mahindra Scorpio,Tata safari,Toyota Innova:Have quite powerful and torquey engines.
Chevrolet Optra Magnum:Just once try this car Scorpio drivers and you will find how a car having 120 bhp and 32 kgm torque must behave on any road.I have driven Scorpio,Safari,Innova and Optra all on hills and the SUVs are nowhere near the sedan on the hilly roads, neither in the pulling nor in the dynamics.Even my Corolla being just 90 bhp can outrun all these SUVs on hills.Ask any Corolla D-4D owner.

Mahindra XUV 500,Tata Aria:Good and powerful,really powerful.
Chevrolet Cruze:At the same price you get more features and a far far better fun to drive factor.Again the SUVs are nowhere near this sedan on any raod(I am not talking of no-road).

I think I don't need to go higher because the story is same in every segment.
About the petrol sedans,I'd say Reading your comments,I am sure that you people haven't yet driven a Laura TSi or Fiat Linea T-Jet,why compare City with a Scorpio, compare the T-Jet which has got a better mid range.

(OT:Right now I am short on time,so to be continued....)

The short and precise comparo posted by you is good, i dont know who has denied this, i guess no one has denied the fact that due to better power to weight ratio and low centre of gravity aids sedans to take faster turns on twisties and also provides better 0 to 100 or so called performance figures. But when things come to travel on roads which are beyond the reach of sedans (high GC, water crossings, slushy,) than a SUV comes into forefront and the same comparo turns into the favour of SUV.

But as i said how many people will use their SUV as a true SUV?
Most of the roads are doable in Sedans but beyond that its only SUV.
If you are suppose to carry more than 4 people comfotably than its SUV or MUV or Cross Overs.

It all depends on the need of an individual, like mine is fullfiled by a cross over and i have gone for it...

2 things -
  1. Even some UVs are 4WD while some are AWD,
  2. Why does sedan require 4x4 or AWD ? [confused] Next someone will even ask why sedan doesn't have high ground clearance ?
Some SUV have AWD... so? They are not proper off roaders.

Sedans have AWD to assist them in slippery conditions, not for off roading.

And besides this, Innova & Fortuner as based on same platform called IMV platform of toyota. Besides, you will find that several parts in innova, fortuner are shared, some are even taken from altis. Though I don't have objections to it but the price difference between Innova & Fortuner is not worth. Innova offers more VFM than Fortuner. And yes, I found seating of XUV better than Fortuner.
So if some parts are shared, it becomes the same car?

NICE.

And even in above pic, in 1st pic, there is big dent in bumper of safari & in 2nd pic, behind safari, you can even see Maruti Van/Omni [lol].
So?

Any the other car is a Qualis, not an Omni.

I dont get it ..what are you pointing to?

what has a dent to do with this thread?
What he means is - if you take a sedan off road (maybe an S class), then even if you bang it somewhere, it will come out without dents.

Or maybe sedans are "dent proof".

As said before, T-Fortuner metal sheet inspires less confidence when compared to say M & M scorp or Safari. Infact, punch innova on bonnet & dent is made. With same intensity, it is not seen on Tavera. My friend has done this demo [;)].
True.

What was the humorous part to fall of the chair?
Maybe he read his own comment somewhere.

As i said, I may never go off road, but I would still like to drive an SUV in town. I feel there is nothing wrong in that.

I prefer Sedans over SUV among the cars belonging to lower price category.I don't how good premium SUVs behave but I heard a Porsche Cayanne handle like a car and if it is like that then I would prefer it considering it has some off road capabilities.

Suv's can come close it but can never match. laws of physics cannot be changed.

I cannot or no sedan can cross the railway gates (with huge bumps) in our kannur districts like a fortuner ,scorpio or safari -just quoting an example.

Biggest advantage :-they can be moved on the road with little botheration about road conditions.

For 2 reasons, I always prefer SUV. one is good GC and the next is good road visibility. I do like its stunning looks which is subjective. [:)]

In Kannur i didn't come across any railway crossing, but the one near Muzhapilangad drive in Beach, was not deep at all.

But in Kannur one has to follow a bus still he stops.[frustration]

A bus or auto overtakes you, but you can't due to single lane road, and twisted curves.

Agreed we are on agressive side.
When it comes something against public nuisance and politics we Kannurians are beyond imaginations. we have a definite unity in such matters which I dint find anywhere else in world.

There are couple of them scattered around ,the one you are talking about was refurbished when we local people made a big fuzz with the gate keeper.
my home is just near about that railway gate.

In such a place a car like Punto makes one feel on cloud nine.large Expensive vehicles gives nightmares.

I have noticed majority of kannurians who owns SUV or Uvs rarely use them. they bought it because they have buying power and it lays in front of home as show off thing.

No its not neccessary that a CBU of Toyota has to come from Japan Factory Itself. If the vehicle is manufactured in Thailand or some other country then they can also Import from there, it all depends how much money they'll spend on transportation.

I guess they do make TLC in Thailand factory.

Whereas Fortuner is partially made in India and many parts are imported from Thailand or other parts. Thats why it is still costly as compare to fully manufactured vehicle from INDIA.
Wish Tfort will be available at 15L OTR Delhi price, i'll sell my Aria and buy that.

Thanks for the info. as i was not sure thats why i have put the word 'Guess'.
Now its clear. Anyhow importing from Japan and Thailand will not make much difference in transportation cost as they are being transported through sea route so very minimal difference in cost.

India has FTA with Thailand, because of which taxes are less on products shipped from Thai than from other places. But I doubt whether the car cos actually pass on this benefit to the end user. They must be interested in getting more profit than sharing advantage with the customer.

Let me share a pic for the conclusion of this thread
See the below pic. A SedUV [:D]

Afghanistan has almost no roads, hence SUVs are best to travel in such conditions. Even in India where there are no roads, SUV is best, no denying this. But I hardly travel on roads where a sedan can't go, so no use of SUV for me.

Cayanne is not SUV, it is more like sports car with high GC. And whats the use of cayanne if you are going to take it off road ?? You won't be able to drive in speed in anycase, why bother ? You can though have a look at Merc GLK.
