Friends,

A big debate was going on a Hindi News Channel. A few points raised by the host:

1) Are Indian Cars Sub-standard?

2) Is Life of an Indian less important?

3) Why foreign rejected / failed cars are accepted in India?

4) Do car companies compromise on driver's safety in India?

5) 3rd Party Insurance is needed to take care of any injury/death caused by driver and the damage in case of accident but what are the steps taken by OEM company if in case the driver himself dies because car could not bear the accident?

6) Are the companies playing with lives of us Indians?

Since Celerio got a Zero at a moderate speed crash test, below is a pic of new Celerio that hit a cycle rickshaw at low speed in front of my eyes few months back and just see the impact.

Biggest Questions of All from my side!

Should the Variants of Indian Cars without safety features be banned?

Should OEMs be heavily and strictly fined for charging extra for safety features?

Why not same standards of safety given to domestic variants as given to export ones?

Regards

Did you really just said "cycle rickshaw". After seeing that pic, evenbefore reading that post. I thought another car might have done that to celerio but a "cycle rickshaw" seriously. This takes security concerns of maruti cars or any other in general to a different dimension of craziness.

For full details and more pics of shattered parts of Celerio lying on the road, please click on this post. Indeed an utter shame!

There is no point blaming the car manufacturers. They are following the law of the land. The aim of every business is to maximize share holder value lawfully, and that's exactly what they are doing.
If the Government dictates higher safety standards (hopefully 2017 deadline is not deferred again) and reduces RTO and taxes substantially for star rated cars, the situation will change, else it will remain the same.
The question is why do people buy unsafe cars?, and the answer is they think the problem of safety is overblown. There are millions of 800s, Altos and Datsuns plying the road with no apparent consequence. When the herd is safe why wouldn't the next sheep join it?

Actually, the herd mentality is biggest issue with us in India. If the entire herd falls in poop knowingly, then the newest follower should also fall! People buy unsafe cars mainly because they are just looking for safety in mere "words". For them safety means gear lock and central locking in the car. When it comes to knowing and opting for safety feature variants their facial expression at large is like Nil bata Sannata([confused]). Morevoer, it is the brands that charge a premium on safety features which makes many buyers opt for cheaper models even if it means compromising their lives. For majority of people cars are meant for A to B commute and they hardly know in detail about it. But this time, Tin-Can brand will face the fire like never before.

Yeah I don't think so. Seeing from the mindset of first time buyer in our country, their budget won't allow them to think of any other car than these tin cans. The news channels will only play this, till this news gains any views. After that I'm sure almost everyone will forget these results.

Safer cars are only possible if govt takes a real initiative to make these cars safe with strict norms which I don't see happening anytime soon.

Looks like the things are a bit different this time. Unlike the last time, this time the news is garnering the attention even out of the circle of car guys orbsaybauto sites, forums etc. Every newspaper this time published these results and even electronic media is also showing this news time and again. In other words, the outreach seems to be way way larger this time with even common folk also getting to know of what has happened.

But there is a downside too; most of the reports have included cars like Figo and Polo too in the list of failed cars without mentioning that they have passed the tests with flying colours for their airbag equipped versions and anyhow have a stable body shell.

@ksdr
Saarji your driving experience is equal to my age hence I can expect a complete man on the other side (Complete man == one wife in side and kid(s) around). So it should be more than natural for you to give a prime importance to safety in the car(s) you buy. After all; "hai apno se pyar, toh kharido ek safe car".

Absolutely Vipul have taken enough risks in early 90's and thankfully never had any serious incident except some slow speed falls on two wheels. But today if it's a bad day even on 4 lane roads we have vehicles jumping divider from opposite side and hitting your vehicle for no fault of yours.

Excuse me, but for all the media attention to this event, I feel nothing will really change until a legislation is put in place, either by the Government or, by the Courts. The tinted glass ban (which is a bit illogical) has worked like nothing else so far, (barring a few odd cases)- no one has dared to even reverse that ban. Same case with the NCR diesel 2000cc ban.
As I said in an earlier post, Indians only understand the power of the "cane". It is a bit harsh, but it is the truth. The media may highlight this because it is topical, but with the next assembly election result, everything will be forgotten and new topics will come up for them.
Meanwhile, we will continue to see 0-star rated cars garner over 70 % of the Indian monthly sales, admonish the likes of VW, Fiat, Skoda ,Ford etc for not doing enough to sell their well-built cars.
