By delaying the launch of Fiesta, Ford has ceded the first mover advantage to Hyundai. Last heard there were 5000+ bookings for Verna. I fear, Fiesta now may not have such overwhelming response.

On positive side, Hyundai's premium pricing has left a lot of scope for Ford to competitively price Fiesta. If it can seriously undercut Verna & Vento (specially for diesel variant), many of Verna bookings may get cancelled!

I still feel that Ford Fiesta will grab the sales of City, Verna. The handling of Fiesta was the USP of the older version(now Classic) and i am sure, the new variant would surely have inherited the same DNA.

Update: Ford has claimed the mileage figures of 23.1 Kmpl and 17 Kmpl for the New Fiesta Diesel and Petrol variants respectively. Apart of this, the car is launching next month but chances of Automatic transmission are unlikely in 2011.

SURPRISE by FORD INDIA,

The new Fiesta will be powered by 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5-litre petrol is a scaled down version of the 1.6-litre motor that powers the earlier Fiesta - now Fiesta Classic - but comes with Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) which boosts power to an impressive 108.46bhp.
The 1.5-litre diesel is an enlarged version of the 1.4 Duratorq and now comes with an inter cooler. The diesel develops 89.72bhp and 20.81kgm of torque. Both cars are equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a twin clutch auto ‘box is expected later this year.
Ford claims that the Fiesta gives best in class fuel efficiency of 17kpl for the petrol and 23.5kpl for the diesel according to the ARAI test cycle.

Just watched CnB's Fiesta review. Some points:

1. As compared to old Fiesta (now Classic), new Fiesta has weak low end.

2. Seat are the best part of the interior: good support.

3. Handling is as sweet as F Classic.

4. Price 8-10 L

IMHO Ford will price it lower than that. Although ACI has also quoted a range of 9-11L, but given the pricing of Figo (Ford's only super success in India), competitively priced peers, lack of snob value, specially detuned powertrain and interiors with evident cost cutting I am expecting a range of 7-8 for petrol and 7.5-8.5 for diesel models respectively.

As compared to Classic, it looks a good leap forward in terms of :

1. Design: very contemporary

2. Interiors: Classics seats are not as comfortable as a car specifically meant for driving pleasure should have been. But new seats just look awesome. Although in space and plastic quality difference is not as evident. But in gadget & looks department again, new Fiesta feels miles ahead. Voice control for music system, bluetooth connectivity & ACC is one feature which many people will feel glad to show off. This could be one of its USP.

3. FE: Classic's 1.4TDCi is a very FE unit but 1.6 Duratech is not so. However with ARAI certified 17 kmpl FE figure, 1.5 TiVCT seems very good compromise between FE & power.

I like one thing about Ford: i.e. Blue. Its a known fact that we Indians do not prefer blue color for cars and bikes. But Fiesta is one car that has been offered in blue shades. Earlier SXi model in electric blue looked really sexy and now new Fiesta is being promoted in blue shade which looked really cool in blue.

I think 1.5 TDCi has been plonked in Fiesta with hatch in mind for future launch. As we know for obtaining tax/excise exemption any car has to be under 4.0 m length & engine capacity should be less than 1.2 L for petrol & 1.5 L for diesel. Fiesta hatch is 3950 mm long and hence eligible for excise benefit talking from dimensions perspective. But plonking 1.6 TDCi would have shown the door for Fiesta hatch.

However Ford has no suitable petrol engine for Fiesta hatch. Figo's 1.2 L is a lethargic unit and can not be plonked in a premium hatch. And this may be the one reason for Ford's to be non committal about the hatch. They are giving justification such as hatch is costly to design and would be unsuitable for India. However, if Fiesta gets off to a good start then it opens up an opportunity for the hatch. With increased parts sharing, manufacturing cost would be lower. Additionally 4% excise duty cut for hatch will mean a saving of around 25K.

Combing both these factors, if Ford can price the hatch at around 35K less than sedan, then it might hits the bully eye.

But to be able to get the excise exemption, Ford has to get a good 1.2L petrol engine first.

According to Ford's UK website, Ford has 5 petrol engine for Fiesta: two variants of 1.25 Duratech, 2 variants of 1.4 Duratech and 1.6 TiVCT. We can rule out 1.4 Duratech for India. Its neither here nor there engine from India's perspective.

1. One 1.25L engine produces 60 PS with 18.18 kmpl.
2. Second 1.25 L engine has 82 PS with 17.85 kmpl.
3. 1.6 TiVCT engine has 120 PS with 17.25 kmpl
4. 1.6 TiVCT has been detuned in India to 1.5 TiVCT with 108 PS and 17 kmpl

For part sharing it will make sense if Ford can remove one cylinder of TiVCT block (ala VW, Skoda & Nissan) and still produce > 80 PS power and increased FE. But it will increase NVH which would be cause of concern.

At present, Classic is bridging the gap between Fiesta and Figo. But this to me a short time arrangement. Classic is dated and has not been priced to the expectation. So Ford has two options to bridge the gap in future:

1. Upgrade/jazzed up Figo
2. Get Fiesta hatch after knocking off some feature.

I am all for new Fiesta hatch if priced in line with i20. What is your opinion guys?
