Re: My Modified Maruti 800.

Sorry for my interruption friends.
Need the help from you experts in solving my alternator problem of my 800 (5 Speed).

My alternator stopped working couple of months back and the local workshop guy changed the same with a used alternator claiming that the replaced one is of 5speed 800's only.

I had to drive in a night last week when it was raining heaviliy, for half an hour. my headlamps, A/C, wipers in full speed and music system was working. After half an hour, all these gradually stopped working but somehow I reached home. I could see that my battery was fully drained.

It was a clear indication that the alternator couldnt generate the power as required. Now my plan is to buy a new alternator. Arun - Could you please suggest me on this? Can I buy an Alto's alternator? How much it costs? Good suggestions are welcome please.

Hello Aneesh,
Welcome to TAI .
Regarding your alternator issue just do a quick checkup yourself. (arrange for a multimeter if you can, to measure the battery voltage)

Step 1: Check the alternator belt for proper tightness. If you press the belt with your thumb it should press only to 1/2 inch.
Step 2: Check for any cracks in the alternator belt
Step 3: Sit inside the car and turn the key to ON position. The battery light(in the meter) should glow. If yes then the wiring is ok. If no then the bulb is fused or the wiring has some problem.
If the bulb is fused or some wiring is missing then the alternator will not be able to charge the battery.
Step 4: If the battery light glows in ON position, then start the car and see the light Does it go off ?? If yes then the alty is ok. If no then rev. the engine to higher RPM and see if the light goes.
NOTE: for step4 the battery should read at least 12v in a multimeter.

If the alternator fails in the test, Just take your car to a local mechanic(car electrician) and get the alternator checked. BTW: How much did you pay for the used alternator ??. If he is able to resolve your problem for within Rs. 500/- (by replacing the brushes or repairing the rectifier plate or checking some wiring in your car) then its ok. Else you should go for an alternator upgrade.

Maruti 800 4spd alternator is 35amps and costs Rs 4300/-
Maruti 800 5spd alternator is 50amps and is out of production

You can install Santro's alternator. Its 75amps and costs 4800/-

The prices are dealer's price for LUCAS-TVS in Lucknow(UP) and may be different at other states.

Re: Maruti 800: Technical Issues and Solutions

The type of alternator you can fix in your car depends a lot on the mounts that are available to mount the alternator in your car.

The Santro alternator might not fit your car. Please be sure to compare the alternators(Factory fitted, present and the new one)before buying. Also the belt used in the Santro alternator might be serpentine belt as compared to a V-belt from a 4 speed Maruti 800.So check the pulley as well of any alternator you purchase or buy a new pulley to accommodate the kind of belt system used in your car.

Re: Maruti 800: Technical Issues and Solutions

Note : Santro's / Swifts alternator is not a direct fit. Need to do some alterations to the mounts.

You can go with zen's or Esteems which is direct fit with 50 amps. I guess its the same in 5 speed 800 mpfi.

Servicing My Car

I had given my car for servicing yesterday. Today, i received a call from the service center that there is a need to change bushes gear etc., I'm technically not that much good and am giving the service for the first time. But, as far as my experience, i feel the ride smooth and there was no problem.

Please tell me how can i make sure that those people are not tricking me because i know nothing about this. Please do tell that what are the basic things that are/to be changed(oil, brake fluid etc.,) in an usual service.

Thanks in Advance

Re: Servicing My Car

1995 model, about 78,000 from 1995.
Nope, i have given it to some local service center, not MASS.
Are you the owner from 1995?
if the bushes has not been changed (which i doubt) might need replacement
let Varun comment on this.

78k is low for a 95 model i think, ~4.5k per year.

Re: Servicing My Car

Hi mreccentric, 9k for a 800 is too costly. Are you getting it serviced at MASS. If yes I would suggest you not to get it done.

Gear bushes just cost 250rs, also if he changes the bedding/rod etc it will not go above 800 rs -1000 rs.

I can suggest you a reliable local mechanic if you need.

Yes, we are the owners of the Car from 1995.
Yes, 78k is verymuch less. We use the car occasionally, thats a big problem. I somehow need to think about using it more frequently.

Re: Servicing My Car

wow! what a list. better stick to the mechanic Varun recommends.
Whats so wrong? Are you saying this because its long?
As far as my experience, my car is smooth. I don't know what problem it causes if i don't change. I also don't know about the cost prices, please do tell me whether the service center is costlier than others.

Are you servicing your car after a long time?
many of the parts need expert opinion.
coolant, air filter etc needs to replaced at particular intervals.
kindly post the last service details
