Re: Mahindra Compact SUV Codenamed S101

This was expected when you design a contraption with high ground clearance and a short wheel base. Can't they just bring out a proper vehicle instead of chasing the less than 4 metre class.Reminds me of farmers in my place jumping on to ginger and vanilla farming en masse and getting everyone into trouble.
Actually this holds true for all sub 4 metre cars with the min-SUV tag! Ecosport shape size & high ground clearance makes me always think it will topple! So does Quanto!

Moral of the story: OEMs should not try to invent/discover these segments like mini-SUV where there clearly isn't one viable leading to the shape of a vehicle like a ball or an egg(ES) which will obviously roll! I know its 50% savings in excise duty!

In a interview somewhere on youtube I heard a top exec of an Indian automotive company say that the very definition of an SUV in India based on ground clearance & length etc for excise duty purposes is completely flawed.

Ford EcoSport rivalling Mahindra S101 testing in Chennai.

The S101 is based on an all-new monocoque chassis that Mahindra has developed in conjunction with Ssangyong. The model would also receive a petrol engine that is likely to be from a family of small gasoline engines, also developed with Ssangyong.

The five-seater SUV is most definitely a sub-4meter model, taking on the Ford EcoSport in India. It has been confirmed that the car will belaunched in 2015.

The compact SUV will get a new monocoque chassis and probably a petrol engine developed with help from SsangYong. Expect a 2015 launch.

This is possibly a new variation based on the forthcoming S101 is aimed squarely at the Ecosport. The earlier S 101 prototypes were shorter while this appears to be one step closer to production.
Diesel and Petrol engines are likely. Pricing will be close to the Rs.10lakhs region

That's a nice find, it will definitely be a wannabe XUV for people without budget for the original XUV, or maybe i can call the Cheetah's cub, whatever, they let it with diesel automatic, it will find many buyers.

Re: Mahindra Compact SUV Codenamed S101

For my eyes till the front wash wipers it has SUV looks after wards if you see the side or rear profile this car looks to be a hatchback,

If Ecosport belongs to mini suv segment, then this belongs to another new segment, i will call it as micro suv

Maruthi doesnt have anything good at suv segment and mahindra doesnt have any thing success at hatchback or sedan segment, let me see if this s101 bring success for mahindra in hatchback segment

Re: Mahindra Compact SUV Codenamed S101

^^^it might look a bit similar to the Ford ES except for the tiny wheels here, of course no wheel on the back too. Maybe people relate bulged baloonish shape with SUV & somewhat flatter surfaces with hatchbacks?

wonder why carmakers try to create these new segments. TM tried to create one with Nano & we know how its doing.

Mahindra S101 test mule.

Mahindra-S101-side-spyshot-test-mule-in-Ooty (1).jpg

The test mule has gotten new body parts such as headlights, bumpers and a complete tailgate. A mounting bracket appears to be placed at the rear, likely to carry the external spare wheel. Few other parts like the rear combination lamps are still to be seen in production form.
The S101 would become Mahindra’s second monocoque chassis model. It is based on a newly developed platform and would get driven by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, besides a sub-1,500 cc diesel engine

Re: Mahindra Compact SUV Codenamed S101

Is this a hatcback or a CUV ? Another segment to confuse the buyers.

Mahindra will also offer one of its newly minted petrol engines that the automaker has jointly developed with Ssangyong.
A small diesel engine, likely to be the 1.5 liter twin turbo unit from the Quanto, allied to the front wheel drive layout of the S101 should give the compact SUV decent pep as well as fuel efficiency. Mahindra is expected to continue its bold experiments with a six seat (3+3) layout on the S101 with the gear shifter moving to the dashboard. From the latest set of spyshots, it is evident that the S101 is a crossover that sits in a compact form factor of a B-Segment hatchbacks, which in other words means that the SUV will be easy to drive and park in high traffic conditions.
