Re: Mahindra XUV5OO: "The Dark Knight" Buying & Ownership Experience [33K Kms Crossed

IR Sir,

Excellent review. We came across a Used XUV,which had done just 7000 Km in almost 1 year. Its a W8 version and quoting 14.25L.Color is Dolphin Grey.Does 2012 vehicles have niggles?
Dont see a reason to buy a second hand XUV for 14.25L even though its hardly run - why not a new for a little extra instead ?

Generally Mahindra vehicles do come with niggles - its a package deal - depends on which month in 2012 - if its late 2012 risks are lower, but keep a threshold anyways

I curbed my right foot in the recent tankful and never exceeded 110kmph, got a decent FE of 15.18kmpl over a tankful (nearly 68 liters of fill up this time, so a very healthy metric). This was a for mixed cycle of 30% city /40% highways / 30% very bad roads!

But the most surprising part was the Infotainment display showed a reading of 15.2 over the entire cycle - that's how accurate its got to be, previously i used to get a variation of even 3-4kmpl, so the new software update has come with some common sense it seems. ill however keep monitoring between tankfuls and mid(after reset) for the entire period and will comment.

How about fellow owners with the new software - how accurate are your MID readings now ?

This time the tankful gave 14.54 while the MID was showing 14.9 kmpl not too bad again! Similar cycle as above.

No other updates otherwise, I am yet to get the maps update - havent had the time. Nearing 35K!

Also hear there is an even better George "Bush" design that has come up - my current ones have lasted 5k already and seem to do pretty well surprisingly.

Nearly 36k done and trundling along, this tankful got a real FE of 15.2 the mid was showing 15.7 - again not bad. But more importantly the accuracy of the fuel display now leads me to drive more efficiently, its easy to drive fast - but better to drive efficient.

Very good FE.

Car looks well maintained and it is shining in black.

What is that small scratches like colour patch at the bumper near the front tyre or is it a photo effect.

Thank you sir, The FE is good , on pure highway runs if you restrict yourself under 100 one can easily get 18kmpl, my run is a mixed bag of city/highways/very bad roads. So i think its acceptable.

Its just a photographic delusion

15.x FE is too good for such a big beast. Looks like your Cheetah has surpassed ARAI bench marks [clap]. Great going for you[:)]

Well its easy to surpass ARAI mileage if you are light with your right foot and a follow a few good practices, on pure highway runs i have got upwards 18kmpl over a tankful - the problem is can you "restraint" your right leg![:D] XUV is a double edged sword in that matter.

It is really hard to keep the speedo needle South of 100kmph.
But for smooth roads going till 110-120 wont make a dent in the 18kmpl figure.

@Iron Rock: Suggest avoid long trips on one way roads untill you get another call from Mahindra .

Hi Iron Rock,
First let me appreciate you for a very well written and detailed review of XUV 500 [clap] I am planning to buy the W8 version next month. Are there any specific issues I need to look out for while going for the W8 version considering it has numerous gadgets in it. I need to know because the sales guy at India garage told me that when compared to scorpio the XUV cannot be used as a hardcore offroader.

Thanks RagMax, i think rather than looking for niggles , one should spend time doing a thorough PDI in a new car, my suggestion is please look up our PDI from the forum and add to it the host of W8 functionalities and run through this checklist. If you take care of the car , the car will take care of you in the long run - that's my little tip to you!

I think we should give that Salesman an award for honesty, they dont come like that these days [:D] - He is absolutely right, XUV at best is a very mild offroader(in AWD guise), essentially its a soft-roader and the AWD can help out in a few situations at max.

However in my books there are anyways very few real offroaders(at a budget) and most end up non practical for everyday use (there and thereabouts). If you are looking for real offroaders its a completely different ball game. All depends on your needs and purpose.

Yes Iron Rock, I think you are right. Maybe I have to be ready to face some minor niggles if I have to own the beast for which I am in anyways ready. The only thing I was worried mainly was regarding the suspension issue and another issue regarding the security siren falling off and getting entangled in the engine bay which was mentioned quite elaborately on other forums as well. Have you faced any such issues. I will check up the PDI from the forum. Thanks for the advice.
My basic necessity is a car which can go through the usual city rough roads rather than a pure offroader. Yes I will be taking the beast for my outings. I will update as and when there are any further developments.
