Another small review of Punto 90HP.

It's been exactly a year since the Punto was launched and Fiat's baby has done reasonably well for itself. With a gorgeous Italian form, reasonably spacious interiors along with an amazing ride and handling package, the Punto made for a pretty viable option. However the engines were a bit of a letdown. While the petrol 1.4 was pretty capable, it was the more popular 1.3 Multijet diesel that suffered on performance. While the same engine proved itself to be a nippy performer in the Swift and the Ritz, the Punto's heavier kerb weight made it a lazy performer. And now with Ford and Hyundai coming up with better performing diesels, it was time for the Fiat to up the Punto's game.

And that's just what Fiat has done. Floor this baby and you can immediately notice the extra pep in performance. The extra pep comes from the same engine that powers its bigger sibling, the Linea. Shifting from first to second in the powerband induces an almost first gear wheelspin thanks to the massive wave of torque. This is the result of the variable geometry turbocharger that not only offers a higher power output but also aids drivability and fuel efficiency thanks to lesser use of throttle.

In a segment currently operating with fixed geometry turbo Engines delivering 69-75 PS of power, the Punto will be the only car in its segment, with a 'locally produced' Variable Geometry Turbo engine. The Hyundai i20 is the only other hatch with similar power output and we can't wait to pit these together. The Punto 90 HP as it has been christened features minimum changes on the outside with the badging and the chromed door handles being the only differentiating factor. On the inside, the seats now feature sporty red stitching to highlight the new sporty character.

The new Fiat Punto "90 HP Emotion" does not seem very impressive to me. I was expecting Fiat India to launch it with all the flash we had seen at the Auto Expo 2010. Those gorgeous blacked-out alloys, those racy red stickers and that very desirable blacked-out sunroof made the car stand out from its lesser siblings. This though, has just been given "sporty" red stitching on its seats, improvements in interior quality and the 90 HP engine, and it looks almost the same like the regular Puntos, which in my view, is not good at all.

Wanna know what tag-line have they shod the 90 HP Punto with? Here goes-

"No wonder you're behind me...
I am the most powerful diesel hatchback." :lol!:

To me if the performance of so called sports model is really as exciting as it sounds(90BHP), i wont mind paying for it even it looks like the regular model. Racing strips alloys and smoked headlamps can be installed as per ones wish. Atleast this punto sports model is far better than the so called sports editions of Zen and Civic which had nothing postw except for decals.

First of all FIAT is not calling it a sports model so why are we?
I believe its a good move and later launch the punto sport with more powerful petrol and all the bells and whistles (read TJET):please:
Launching 90HP punto with all that was shown in the auto expo would increase its price to an extent where it would fail miserably.
At present i think this car should be able to improve punto sales by 500-600 cars pm.
Though i think the mistake FIAT made was to launch the punto with FGT[frustration]. Punto should have had the VGT ever since its launch across all variants!
I am sure people would not have mind paying about 30k premium for the VGT across all the punto variants had it been launched at the first place.

@Amaan
Looks are subjective but i think punto is the best looking hatch and one of the best looking cars on the Indian roads currently.
About the tag line, I think it can attract people's attention.

I think the Punto 90HP which is launching next week will be cool.

But heard some rumors that the Punto Sports may come few months down the line with the same engine, maybe with the differently tuned engine/ECU or maybe even the T-Jet! This is only speculation [evil]
