But As far as my memory goes, I have read it some where that all Indian cars have +5 KMPH error. This is rule being enforced by Indian Govt on all car companies in India.

I dont know if it is GOI rule or to serve any purpose ,but I guess its error due to smaller wheel size , Punto in west accomodates 16 and 17 inches fiat might have used same odo settings without any change.

Purpose is simple, when you think you are cruising at 100 kmph, you are actually cruising at 95kmph. So taking into considerations that everyone in India follows the speed limit for particular road, you are always driving 5 kmph lesser speed than what you are assuming.

I hope you got the point.

That is really foolish, to tamper with global standards. Then why not make it + 20 or more kmph it would be safest deal.
it is like adding -100ml to fuel pumps so that people think that cars are less fuel efficient and use other alternatives.

I know it is foolish, but across the internet many people notifying same 5kmph speedo error for different 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers. If you want , you can google for "5kmph speedo error in India". It will give more results for the same.

Btw Its not my finding but from various ownerships across the forums, I am not sure if its after modifications or in stock conditions.
people have claimed to go 180+ in swift and ritz.

Ohh! So people have done 180+ Kmph in Swifts & ritz means there is more error in Maruti's ODO, is this what you want to say? :stupid:

Following link and abstract from the article can provide a better picture:

Speedometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most speedometers have tolerances of some ±10%, mainly due to variations in tire diameter. Sources of error due to tire diameter variations are wear, temperature, pressure, vehicle load, and nominal tire size. Vehicle manufacturers usually calibrate speedometers to read high by an amount equal to the average error, to ensure that their speedometers never indicate a lower speed than the actual speed of the vehicle, to ensure they are not liable for drivers violating speed limits.
