Headlamps switch should not be used as an alternative to high beams. Actually they leveling should be done only when required to avoid glare to oncoming traffic. For eg, if the car is fully loaded the light level gets upraised which can be lowered using headlamp leveler.

The explaination by Amandeep is pretty good for understanding.

Thanks for the appreciation buddy!

When I put on the foglamps or when I am in low beam; the light reach is the same; but the intencity is more when both are put on; thats it. So for me I hardly use Headlights at night. I only use HIGH BEAM when needed.[evil]

well I make it a point to drive on low beams most of the time in the city or highway with the fog lamps on.
But sometimes especially on places like NH-58 where you don't have any street lights, I have to resort to High beams for better visibility.

Well I do not believe in driving on high beams. Because they create a lot of problem for the on coming vehicles. Moreover, I refrain my self blowing horn so use of dipper is maximum always on a higher side. Thus, driving on high beam is not possible for me. :-)

Hello All,
I just saw this thread now its very interesting.

I use only Fog lights (100Watts) 80% of the city limit (places with streetlights), 20% of city limit I use Low beam without Fog lights (places without streetlights).
I use High beam with Fog lights in 2 or more lane Highways and High beam on single lane Highways.

i dont see any use of "fog lamp" in normal driving unless if there is some dense fog or smoke.

If the speed is more than 60Kmph, low beams are useless. You will be going faster than you can see the road ahead. You will need high beams.
at higher speeds with low beams it would be difficult or impossible, to see certain far away obstacles like people crossing roads or animals on road so it would be better to use the headlamps wisely rather than sticking to book rule of "always low beam only" .

How about this.?
Those extras are for [evil]driver coming in the opposite direction not willing to dim the lights even after my repeated flash message.
Wish the titanic crew had your car in their boat to search for survivors[:)].

In city driving always use the light in dip mode.

On highways
It's not bad to drive on high beam unless you dip it at seeing an oncoming vehicle. I learnt this a long time back in my driving lessons days. My driver used to tell me "Gaadi aatey he light nichey karo fir wapas uppar" (As soon as you see an oncoming car dip your lights and again back to high). But high beams only on highways.

I have noticed that truckers acknowledge this high-low beams and they do it diligently, unfortunately the cars do not [anger]

@ Feromv I am seriously planning to fit something like those once i start earning my own cash! The nuisance of driving inside city with high-beam is increasing steadily! 6 out of 10 cars in Chennai drive only with high-beams inside at night and most of these cars are hatches!

@ Fusion_defusion I agree with you completely on the last part!

I find it safer to use high beam on the bike as its only a single lamp and if it does shine in peoples eyes they will see us. While driving the car I don't use HB.

I had a Yamaha Scorpio back in nz. Planning to get a suzuki gsr600 or some thing similar in aus. The thing is that the scorpios headlight was a 35/36.5w bulb so it wasn't very bright. Thats why I rode at night with HB on. These bikes I'm looking at now have 55/60w bulbs so I'll be interested to see how they perform at night.
