Diesel vs Petrol Cars in 2013 Scenario!

In US, only 3% cars are on diesel.

Is it due to the extreme cold weather & snow etc in most of the Northern US states which is considered unsuitable for Diesel engines and machines?

A diesel engine requires 250ltr during start-up . This is the reason the engine driver doesnt shut off the engine, even if they arent running for 3-4hrs.

Sorry going off topic again but I would like to clear that a Diesel Engine (Locomotive) does not take 250ltrs, it consumes as little as 1ltr just to crank-up . If the diesel Engine Alco (old type) need to start from a Dead stop it consumes about 6-7ltrs of Diesel & for an EMD loco (new ones from GE) consume about 9ltrs from a dead stop. Sorry but 250ltrs seems an unrealistic figure and Railways would not be able to run if such an amount of diesel is consumed just to crank-up

It says that ultimately gasoline (petrol) in U.S comes as more economical option in the long the long run because of low price of petrol, low tax on petrol and long breakeven period to recover the cost of paying higher for diesel.

It is because of the cost, petrol is more VFM in US and so is cost of ownership of owning petrol cars. Perhaps this is the reason why Mahindra is trying for petrol XUV 500 for US markets.

The Americans are lucky guys, their average earning is 9 times that of Indians, & they get so many things cheap. The car costing post taxes over 1Cr in India is available for 49-58L in US.

We Indians are idiots as we keep voting for same morons who even after 65 yrs of Independence have road, water & electricity as election manifesto.

We waste so much on unnecessary quotas (based on caste/religion). In 1950, India had a road network which was 35% better than China. Special thanx to the Brits. Now China has 50% better than us. Some times I wonder, We got our independence a decade or so too soon.

@Indica, BUT then whats your reason for Europe? Its not about cold alone. US market has a prejudice towards Diesels, thanx to Detroit diesels of the past.

@right now- The best example for you comment is Singapore. It got its independence in 2000 from Brits. We should have delayed our independence just by another 50 to 100 yrs and we would have been on the top of the list for Best countries.

yes Brits did loot us. BUT had they not colonized us, India would not have existed. We would have been a 20 odd small countries. Brits gave us the basic infrastructure, which was amongst the best in the era. I think Brits were the best thing that happened to India, because they gave us an IDENTITY, which we are trying hard to destroy.

If India would have gotten its independence say about 50 years later say around ~1997 then it would have probably been a Hong kong? I assume so ...

However the country(landmass) alone would have been a developed nation &the people would have been totally exploited and/or wiped off by the colonial rulers ... way off track from the topic by the way

anyways for those who thinking petrol has gone up 1.50 & diesel only 0.45 & assuming nothing has changed are probably wrong because the petrol hike might well be the only hike till 2014 whereas Diesel hikes every month are a given ...

Sometimes I feel Brits should have ruled India till 1990s, situation would have been better. Earlier their were white dogs, now its brown. Its the color which has changed, breed remains more or less the same.
